One thing i would like to point out is that the EMAIL field on comments is OPTIONAL.
Recently I mentioned that I was after a new Blog/CMS/thingo. I mentioned a few names, and got some great feedback. Well I have finished setting up DasBlog at kjacobsen.net - notice there is no trailing /kjacobsen folder! At first i managed to break .text, well i broke the site for around 8 hours, and it was all to do with the .text web.config file.
I hope in the comming weeks to move the posts over, will report back when that works out.
If you go to kjacobsen.net now, it will go to dasblog.
For those who are interested in why I chose DasBlog, the decision was basically made on the easy of customization, the look, and the great presentation. I must also so that DasBlog is easier to post to, but i am alittle unhappy i have stopped using an SQL backend, even if Brinkster seems to be breaking their SQL Servers.
As you may all know, the MSN Messenger Team is working on the new messenger, titled, Windows Live Messenger. The current build out on connect.microsoft.com doesn't seem to install on Vista Build 5270, but i have managed to get it working with some minor tweaks.
Basically, download the current build of Windows Live Messenger, and then open the setup file in WinRAR. Simply execute the MSI file contained and you will be able to install and run Live Messenger on the current Vista build.
So, whats the new messenger like? Well, the entire UI has had work done to it, and now it reminds me of several Trillian skins that have been around. The colours are a little loud, but make a nice change. The offline messaging is handy, as well as some of the new functionality. I might do a more detailed review in the comming weeks.
Well after a nice lunch, I sat down and had a tinker with my Vista machine.
I managed to get video drivers to work, i started by installing the Geforce4 MX 440 (the desktop equivalent) drivers provided, restarted, and was fucking pleased when i saw that everything was working. About 10 minutes later Windows Updated downloaded the latest NVidia drivers for my Go card. So now all of vista works.
In the comming days i will be working on getting SuperFetch going, as my parents gave my a 2gb Thumb Drive :-)
VPN connections are now appearing in my connections print out. When i thought i was hitting the shutdown button, it was actually hibernating (fucking annoying as its almost impossible to tell the different these days), so i forced a restart and the connections are now visible. YAY!
So, i now have vista running everything, i have all bar one device going (i cant work out what it is), and that includes my modem (XP doesnt come with drivers).
Have fun!
I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a safe and Holy New Year.
I hope Santa brings you lots of Toys.
Twas the Night before Christmas
Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!
"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.
His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

Well the Vista December CTP has been out for the last few days, and alot of people are saying that it is agreat build. I personally believe that whilst this build is more complete than other builds, it doesn't seem to be as polished this time around, and certain items that are really required and have been in previous builds are missing from this one.
Firstly, I must say i like the idea of using a single disk for Server and Vista. It means that there is less shit for me to lugg around, and makes the functionaly accross the two more similar.
The checked build this time around is shit, i mean, its total shit.
Thirdly, the “Supplimentary driver pack” is missing from this release, so most devices will probably not work. This time around however both network cards are included in the “vista” driver base, but there doesnt seem to be many drivers for things like video cards, which is annoying.
The way that the networking side of things has changed is not a good thing. I DON'T NEED A WIZARD TO SET UP MY IP ADDRESS, I DONT NEED WIZARDS FOR THE OTHER NETWORK SETTINGS. The entire network site of windows is controlled through the “Network Center” which is the shitties thing i have ever seen, and it seems to make things more confusing as there is terminology used incorrectly. For example i presumed that “set up a network connection” meant setting up dialin and vpn connections, but its for wireless networks. WTF?
There is so much about the networking that shits me its not funny, and yes, the server version has the same menus.
I like alot of the new interfaces, things are definitely easier at times, with the exception being the network wizards are even more confusing.
The UI for Internet Explorer is really good, however IE seems to have gone backwards when it comes to tabbing. I do remember some bad Maxthon and Firefox/Mozilla builds which had weird tabbing issues, so i am hope that this is the same sort of thing.
My final bitch is i cant dial VPN connections, i mean, i can make them, but i cant find where they are hidden away so i can fucking dial the connection.
SNARF was alittle app that caught my eye on Frank's Blog. SNARF, or Social Network and Relationship Finder, is put out by Microsoft Research and is aimed at hellping people to manage their email. Like nearly all people working in IT, i have thousands of email, so i will give it ago and see what happens.
I don't have as many emails as Frank however.

Well everyone seems to be mentioning that Virtual Server has become cheaper again. You can now get Ent Edition for USD$199 and Std for USD$99. So for all of you begging me to get it on MSDNAA well, now its pretty cheap to buy (and then you can actually use the licence to make money).

I wish this occured in all major software development companies.
Larry Osterman has posted up a pic of him wearing the "Goat Horns". The Goat Horns where a idea used in the Windows NT 3.1 team to embarrass the person who broke the build last.
Its a great pic.

I was just reading Paul Woods blog. Paul is the intern at the Microsoft office here in Brisbane. I noticed something on this post by Paul, http://spaces.msn.com/members/ausmsintern/Blog/cns!1phELMGr4kGWqnM-Cogp6sXQ!162.entry, Microsoft here has 3 Christmas parties. 3 Parties is a really good reason to want to work for Microsoft!
Like Paul, I was also disappointed that BizTalk server didn't seem to rank much of a mention at the READY Launch Events. I was particularly amazed by this as Brisbane has a BizTalk user group
Well this is big news. According to Bink.nu Exchange IMF (Intelligent Message Filter) updates will be appearing on a regular basis, and they will be through WSUS as well. This is good news.

Looks like we will be getting our first glipse of the Windows Live Messenger Beta. Windows Live Messenger will be the successor to MSN Messenger. Some versions have already surfaced, including one which i have seen that has some nice modifications made to it by some nice internet user.

We all know the differing views of software patents in the software industry. On one side you see people like Microsoft, who says companies should be allowed to patent and hence protect their investment into intellectual property, on the other hand, we see companies and groups like Skype, saying that it hinders innovation.
I must say, i often parially agree with the statement that it hinders innovation. My view has changed over the last few months however. IF i develop something new, and fantastic, perhaps i should have the right to protect it, and make some money from it. I still beleieve that some groups are using it as a method of hindering the competitors, be it big business or smaller software companies, but i think we still need to allow for companies to protect their ideas and work. We cant just say "no more patents for computer stuff", its just not feasible or fair.
I like the idea of not having patents on things like the RSA algorithms, hashing algorithms, and even things like "one-click" ordering.

Applying Exchange 2003 SP2 to computers also running Windows Server 2003 SP1 which are also domain controllers will increase the speed of shutdowns and reboots. SP2 also removes the necessity of shutting down the Exchange Services manually before rebooting/shuting down the machine.

This is a must read, its really great. Jesper has posted up some stuff on what not to do when making a computer product.

This is a follow up to the 7 things not to do...post. Steve Riley describes a nice product that him and Jesper where shown at a confrence. http://blogs.technet.com/steriley/archive/2005/09/13/410737.aspx

http://blogs.technet.com/steriley/archive/2005/09/23/411504.aspx contains links to come presentations which Jesper and Steve have done around the place. I suggest the "debunking security myths" found in the comments.
