I'd like to repurpose an old Thinkpad T42 as a mobile recording rig. 1.5 Gb of RAM, Pentium M Processor. I have a basic Tascam US-122 as a USB interface. My question is - am I setting myself up for trouble to think I can do this? I'd rather not fight with it, but would love to hear from those (if any) who have done something similar. Also, if feasable, should I stick with the 32 bit version?

Hello fellow Ubuntu users,
I have a problem getting a firewire interface to work in ubuntu. The make and model of the interface is
Swissonic Easy Firewire
http://images.thomann.de/pics/prod/218447.jpg
I did a fresh install yesterday of the new Ubuntu 9.10. Now, I plugged in the device and the indicator light lit as expected, then I restarted ubuntu. When it loaded again, I opened the terminal and did the following:
The first line changes the access rights for the firewire port and the second starts the jack server with the freebob driver( I saw that libfreebob was already installed). Now here's the output:
The problem comes from this error:
which occurs every 2 seconds or so. Can anyone tell me what's causing this?
I continued investigating further. I wanted to know if the device is recognized at all by linux. So I came across a neat little shell script called ls1394 (many thanks to the author, Stefan Richter). What this script does, is to show information regarding the connected firewire devices, pretty much what lsusb does for USB devices. And here's the output:
so this means good news - it is recognized. The vendor of the chipset is supposedly Phonic corp. . So I searched the net and found on the ffado/freebob (I'm not sure which) site some info on supported devices and there were quite a few from phonic. Does this mean that most devices from this vendor are supported? Please tell me if there's hope to get this interface to work. Thank you in advance!

Every time I ever run ZynAddSubFX it will always fail and produce no sound after a minute or 2. This usually happens while switching instruments, but also just happens randomly!
The Console shows as follows:
And thats it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I am guessing this could possibly be related to my JACK config, or I could be missing something obvious.
I would also be open to alternatives for synthesizing with a USB keyboard(Korg nanoKey). Preferably one that did not use JACK!
Or a program that can be easily virtualized with something like Wine. I tried running the default software but Wine couldnt do it and my virtualbox had a huge delay between my key press and the noise generated.
Thanks again,
B.
PS: Why does JACK suck so much?

Hi everyone, I want to record/capture sound from other applications with Ardour. But Ardour works with JACK and JACK disables Pulse Audio, as I understand it from my searches. So when Ardour and JACK run, I have no more sound from Firefox, Rhythmbox, etc. So I have nothing to record...
I have a quite fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 32bits. I have tried recording with other software like Sound Recorder or Audacity, it works but produces a bad sound like a MP3 with poor compression. I have played with their configuration, selected other devices in Audacity but no luck so far. However playing sound works well everywhere.
I used JACK and Ardour in Jaunty. I spent days googling and I finally found a way to make them work (more or less) with Pulse Audio. I had to install packages from debian repositories and edit configuration files. I have been able to record sound from other apps but JACK kept shutting down itself regularly.
So before trying to mess up my new Koala with instructions that were designed for Jaunty and didn't even work perfectly, I prefer to ask here if someone could clearly explain me how to make JACK work with everything.
Since Ubuntu Studio exists, I think it means JACK MUST work with the other stuff...
Thanks.

I've been using DeVeDe for about 2 years now and it works great. I've used it in Ubuntu 8.10 and 9.04 but when I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 I can't get DeVeDe to accept any of my video files.
I keep getting the error: Some files weren't video files. - None added.
I've installed every codec and video editing library I can find but none of that seemed to help.
Is there some kind of error log that I can research to see what the actual error is coming from DeVeDe?
Is anyone else having issues with DeVeDe?
I appreciate any help on finding out my issue, thanks.

hi all,
so, im still trying to fix this issue and thought I would try to upgrade jackd. But after this I learned that it can be messy to experiment with that without prior knowledge.
So, I wonder, is there a 'safe' way to upgrade jackd to 0.118 or even 0.117 without breaking anything?
the latest distribution packaged version is 0.116.
thanks!

Can someone recomend a good batch image resize software?
It is important that I be able to rename resized images.
I like to be able to resize images to thumbnails with a "TH" at the end of the file name.
I would also like it to be a GUI program as well but not as important as changing the name of the file.
Thanks for any help

I'm trying to use ubuntu-studio and I need to convert my AVCHD Panasonic HDC Camcorder files to something that studio can handle. I suppose MPEG. Panasonic includes software for windoze but I don't use windoze.
Does anyone know a decent OSS converter for linux? I've been searching the web for a couple hours. I tried to see if the latest ubuntu studio has converters included. From what I can tell they don't.
Thanks in advance, Tom

Xara LX used to work fine in Jaunty, but on upgrade to Karmic it started up with a "can't find imagemagick" message and as a result a fair amount of functions are disabled.:(
I do have imagemagick installed though!
Versions: Xara LX: 0.7r1785-2ubuntu1
imagemagick: 7:6.5.1.0-1.1ubuntu3
Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit, all updates applied
How do I get Xara LX to recognize imagemagick?

Hi, all-
I'm trying to rip a CD track to 64Kbps mono mp3, with ID3 tags, to a folder in my /home directory. I've tried various rippers, including ABCDE (the command-line script) and have settled on RubyRipper, as it worked for me once, but has now turned on me after I changed the output directory.
In RubyRipper's preferences under the "Other" tab, I have the base directory set to "~/Music/sermons/" and next to "Standard" (meaning a standard rip of a single track from a single-artist CD), my naming convention is "newsermon-%t" (just a temp name until I rename it before uploading to the Web.
The problem is, when I click "Rip cd now," I get the following message:
...and I can cancel the rip, overwrite the directory, or auto-rename the directory, none of which does what I want. When I tell it to overwrite (which I tried once), rubyripper exits with some cryptic Ruby errors in the log. I just tried auto-rename, and it did just that, creating an additonal directory called "sermons#1". I assume it would continue doing that (sermons#2, etc.) on future runs.
Any idea how to overcome this weird output directory behavior in RubyRipper?
Thanks in advance for any insight you may have!

Hello all,
nice to see a support forum! I migrated from windows recently (very annoying system btw), so I'm a sort of new to unix. Anyway, I'm a blender person, so I installed blender from the default repository. When I ran the windowed version, the GUI behaved in a very strange way. It took quite some time to react, some of the controls even didn't work (like windowtype switching or the number selection boxes with the two little arrows on the sides). So I tried fullscreen version. There the GUI worked just fine, but blender thought he was still in a window, so all the mouse reactions were offset by the height of the top panel and at the bottom of the window the taskbar or how do you call it reacted instead of blender.
I have Radeon HD4850 with the drivers offered by ubuntu installed and running. The main 3D window behaved a bit better, so it should'nt be an OpenGL problem, am I right? I also tried a random 3D openGL game from the repository, something with aliens, and it did work, even though there were some graphics issues when i tried to change some graphics settings of the game.
Sorry for such a long description, but i can't make it any shorter.
So, Is there anybody out there knowing what did I do wrong?

Hi,
I did a fresh install of UbuntuStudio 9.10 on a desktop in a school to set up a sound studio for them, and introduce the school to Ubuntu (with the plan to install it on notebooks, etc.)
On first boot, after the splash screen (which doesn't disply properly...obvious wrong resolution of screen), I get a black screen with the message :
cannot display
maximum resolution is: 1280*1024
I tried to access the safe mode boot by clicking the 'Esc' key at boot, but I don't seem to be able to access grub...it goes straight to the boot splash screen...
what do you think, I could try next?
Thanks

Hi,
I'm looking to setup either ubuntu 9.10 or ubuntu studio, purely to capture data from VHS (and some other legacy video formats). I wish to capture the audio and video, and store it digitally. Does anyone have any suggestions to which video capture devices and software I should be looking at?
Also are there any known problems using AMD CPUs rather than Intel for such things?
TIA

Hi, I have a Yamaha P-80 keyboard with a MIDI output and an HP Pavillion dv600z laptop with the following:
- AMD Turion(TM) 64 X2 Dual-Core TL-56(1.8GHz/512KB)
- NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 6150
- Ubuntu Hardy Heron
I'd like to buy some piece of hardware to bridge the gap, so I can record and edit tracks from my keyboard on my laptop. Anyone have recommendations for what I should get? Or on what I should watch out for/avoid? I think what I need is a MIDI/USB converter; do I need to be careful about drivers for Ubuntu?
Thanks for any tips,
