Session Storage is a new feature in HTML 5 under Client Storage. Even before the advent of this feature developers were using client side storage before with various techniques. Cookies were the first, foremost and most famous technique which is being used across all the sites(almost). Cookies has its own limitation like increased HTTP call weight, storage size limitation(4 KB). To overcome these, HTML 5 has come up with a feature called Client Storage.

HTML5 supports three types of Client Storage options

  1. Session Storage
  2. Local Storage
  3. Database Storage

Each of the above has its own pros and cons. Considering Browser compatibilities, ease of development and quick ability to adapt in mind, I would recommend Session Storage.

What is Session Storage?

  • Session Storage is a simple map constructed with Key value pairs
  • It is global object in JavaScript, to be more specific it is a sub-object of window
  • The Object perishes once the Window is closed(Window  instance)
  • Session Storage can store megabytes of values, the exact size depends on the browser implementation. For IE8 it is 10 MB

How to use Session Storage?

As we understand that session storage is a simple Map, we can direct set and get values in this object as we do with maps. It is a better practice to create an instance of session storage for usage. Here is the snippet

var dataStore = window.sessionStorage;

This will create a dataStore object which would be our session storage object, now the object is ready for use

Setting a value:

dataStore.setItem(‘key’,'value’);

Getting a value:

dataStore.getItem(‘key’);

Removing a value:

dataStore.removeItem(‘key’)

Clearing the entire object:

dataStore.clear();

Getting the Length:

dataStore.length;

KEY and VALUE are pure String literals in this case

Key things to consider during implementation:

  1. Always remember that both KEY and VALUE are STRING literals, even if you set TRUE as value, it will be considered as a string, same with 1 or 0
  2. As of now only Chrome, Firefox, Safari and IE8 & above supports Session Storage.
  3. It is strongly recommended that you escape the value before setting it in the storage, like dataStore.setItem(‘key’,escape(‘value’)) and while fetching the value, unescape the same unescape(dataStore.getItem(‘key’)). This is to handle special characters, esp for IE
  4. One more key thing to keep in mind is even though sessionStorage can store upto 10MB, it is always better to handle break over scenarios. If the quota exceeds, the browser will throw the following error ,’Uncaught Error: QUOTA_EXCEEDED_ERR: DOM Exception 22‘.Browsers are expected to handle it themselves, but at this point atleast Chrome doesnt. I created a small wrapper around the set which would add a try/catch and I cleared the object on error, it needn’t be the same in call cases, if you desire a specific handling technique, you can do that in the catch. It goes like this

    try {
    dataStore.setItem(‘key’,escape(‘value’));
    }
    catch(e){
    if(e.code == 22){
    dataStore.clear();
    }
    }

Have fun!

I was no different from kids who sang ‘Superstaru yaarunu keta’ more than ‘Twinkle twinkle little star’ during their kinder garden days and I was no different from any kollywood fan who has Rajni in his high esteem and always answered RAJNI for the question, ‘Who is your fav actor’.  Rajni inspired me more with his personal life than with his career, I like him for his simplicity, his spiritual thoughts and way of living.  ’Baba’ is one of my favorite Rajni film, I would prefer watching that than ‘Shivaji-The Boss’.

I don’t remember watching Rajni’s interview before, he never use to give interview to media and that made him more sough after, I think he has never given one before atleast after 90s. For this Diwali it happened, Sun Tv telecasted Rajni’s interview. The last thing that can anyone can expect is Vijay Sarathy interviewing the Super Star, cant they find a better person? he is not even as old as his experience, leaving that apart, he doesn’t even know what to ask, I hope that he was not asked to compile the questions. Vijay Sarathy is good enough to ask people visiting tourist places about their favorite movie/actor/song and not to ask Superstar about anything. Superstar’s aura and charisma tied me to the couch inspite of Vijay sarathy’s stupid rather silly questions, I never knew that the interview is about boasting Enthiran, every question asked/answered was in Enthiran’s context.

Vijay Sarathy requested Rajni to tell a story, Rajni thou hesitated at first, started narrating the story in his own amazing style, it went really well. For those who haven’t heard Rajni’s stories, it always ends with a message, which will have a huge impact and this story is no exception, the message  thou not spiritual as I expected, had a very strong impact util he started molding it around the producer and director. It was so needless and looked like he was asked to boast about Kalanithimaran. I thought Sun Pictures bought Enthiran, but looks like they seem to have bought the star itself.

One more thing that made me sigh is Rajni’s words ‘Award ka padam parom, reward ku thaane panrom’ – No Comments on this. They say with power comes responsibility, so should it with stardom. One more thing is that, I couldn’t claim this as a tamil interview, Rajni was talking in English most of times, then I remembered( he can talk english, walk english, laugh english).

Still he has that supreme simplicity, hope he doesn’t lose that. I read a press article, which says that Rajni is currently paving his way to politics with Sun TV and Kalanithi after kalaignar’s period, not sure about the fidelity thou.

Hitherto a proud Rajni fan,

Raavanan, I couldn’t categorize this movie into a genre  it doesn’t fit in one, it is well blended with all sorts. The first thing that would astonish you is the cinematography, every color, pov, depth and what not? though the opening boat scene was poorly CGIed, the climax was amazingly done. As you sail through the movie, if you will start feeling yourself in Raavanan’s shoes, ofcouse the title suggests everyone that the creator is going to shed some clean light on Raavan’s character and few grey shades on Ram, atleast I went with this assumption and I was not wrong :)

Though the movie title card says that the story is fictional, you cannot stop co-relating, if you know Ramayanam, then you can never escape. Thou the plot is loosely adapted, most of the scenes are fully inherited, I would quote from Ramayanam instead to avoid spoilers,

  1. Hanuman’s meeting with Sita and their conversation
  2. Soorpanakha’s nose incident
  3. Vibhishenan’s character and depiction
  4. Raavan view of Sita and his actions towards her
  5. Sita’s devotion to Dev and her prayers to Lord
  6. Kumbarkarnan takes side of Vibhishenan at the end
  7. Hanuman’s activities during his introduction scene and at the court scene when he was sent as a ambassador to Raavanan’s court, esp the dialogues
  8. Raavanan appreciating Ram’s handsomeness and smartness.
  9. Hanuman saving Lakshmanan.

Things that are purposely made fictional to make the movie look distinct from Ramayanan

  1. Thou Raghini’s ring was shown obviously twice, she doesnt hand over that to Gnanaprakasam as a token, even though he explicitly asks for one.
  2. In Ramayanam, Raavanan kills Soorpanakha’s husband, but Veera doesn’t do that, he just chops off the character’s hands and sends him to Dev.
  3. Singarasu’s character has been highlighted more than the real Kumbakarnan’s
  4. Sakkarai’s killing by Dev, to prove Dev as a cold hearted policemen.

Director has depicted Ram with grey shades and Lakshmanan with double grey shades, office Hemanth doesnt fit Lakshman’s role, but to certain extent he does, the way Gnanaprakasam saves Hemanth is a good metaphor.

The chemistry between Veera and Raghini was carefully painted with zero flaw, the way Veera feels for Raghini and vice versa, Maniratnam has managed to keep her character clean. Though the film is incomplete is few areas, where the director would have given more explanations or reasoning, I feel it is better to have it left incomplete, this way it makes more sense or atleast has avoided more complexity. The romance between Dev and Raghini actually sucks, may be it is intended, Prithiviraj fits well in the cop role, he doesn’t shine involving scenes with Ash, he looks naive in romance. About Aishwarya, she looks good, but too much make up and it strips of the beauty from few scenes, but her performance is impressive.

Wouldn’t say it is a typical Maniratnam’s movie, but it is a masterpiece by itself. A must watch.

“Give me some sunshine; Give me some rain;Give me another chance; I wanna grow up once again”.

The anti – clock/time request has been echoing all around off-late, atleast after the release of 3-idiots movie and even before that I have heard from many about the re-living of past, if given a chance. In modern FB era,pages like ‘I wish my life had an undo button’ or ‘Wish CTRL+Z works in my life too’ etc etc are budding every day.

One of my friends keeps telling this again and again, one day I asked him, Why would you wanna go back?. He told me that, he would like to re-live his life and to set right everything that has fallen apart, I didnt respond to that, I just smiled and jumped to another topic. The question here is, is it really possible to re-live our life undoing all the things which we think we shouldn’t have done at that point. The answer is a big NO.

Assume that we get some super power to recompose our life, I bet we will land up in the same place where we are now. Even though people actually doesn’t mean it when they talk about this undoing, deep inside they feel that they could have handled it some other way, no matter how you handle things, it is always the way we react to it that matters. Personally, I can confidently say that I can never re-live my life better than how I had lived it, it is going to be the same.

Almost all of us expects Life to be a fair deal, we aren’t ready to taste the bitter part of it. The art of living is making use of sufferings, thou the beginning wasnt under your control, the end always is.

Missing those simple days

  1. I felt really connected when I had few friends across the streets than hundreds across the Social Media World.
  2. Even all 100 of my favorite songs shuffled in one ipod with genius playlist isn’t letting me in the bliss which I had when I use to wait for one fav song of mine to be broadcasted over air.
  3. Thousand words over Skype doesn’t convey what a single word would have done face-to-face.
  4. Remembering birthdays wasn’t this hard, now even a reminder is not strong enough.
  5. Spoiled by Choices, Life was happy when there were no choices, happier when there were few, confused n worse when there are many.
  6. Medicines to make us laugh, to make us cry but why don’t people realize that throwing all them is the real medicine to live.
  7. Mango that was available only during summer was much tastier than the one which is available throughout the year.
  8. Thou Holiday at Beach Resort was expensive during those days, it was affordable. Now a Holiday at home, thou cheap its totally unaffordable.

More on this soon.

I came across an interesting person in my office and through him, I got to read ‘Godel’s Proof‘, it is a wonderful book and an awesome read for many reasons. My journey to this book started with Logicomix, which is about the creation of all time classic and bible of Mathematics – ‘The Principles of Mathematics‘ by Bertrand Russell. Godel’s proof broke the castles of principia mathematica.

Godel’s Proof is of two parts:

  1. Any effectively generated theory capable of expressing elementary arithmetic cannot be both consistent and complete. In particular, for any consistent, effectively generated formal theory that proves certain basic arithmetic truths, there is an arithmetical statement that is true,[1] but not provable in the theory
  2. For any formal effectively generated theoryincluding basic arithmetical truths and also certain truths about formal provability,includes a statement of its own consistency if and only ifis inconsistent.

I have heard from many people(esp. those who believe science is everything and who denies God’s existence) that the universe is written in the language of Mathematics, but the poor thing is they have grouped a set of things which are un-answerable/un-provable as PROBABILITY. Lets not get off-track. We can break the questions put forward by these set of people with Godel’s proof, we can TECHNICALLY derive at a solution to prove them the existence of God. The answer is not readily available, but their so called thirst can be quenched if you extend Godel’s proof. My last statement is at axiomatic stage, will update the proof if I come out with one convincingly.

About the Book:

  1. A must read for every engineer/thinker
  2. The proof sections are little heavy
  3. Clear examples and derivations is good enough to reach a common man- like me, non-mathematicians.
  4. Do some homework about ‘principia mathematica‘, before starting this book, it will help a lot.
  5. ‘The Richardian Paradox’ – would stay with you forever, you will feel the difference.

Further Read :

  1. Godel’s Papers
  2. principia mathematica

And as its back cover says, ‘any educated person with a taste for logic and philosophy the chance to satisfy his intellectual curiosity about a previously inaccessible subject.’

I would say : 5/5

A feel good movie from Gautham Menon.

Story gist :
Love at first sight, a boy – a girl, the boy doesnt fall in love this time,whereas he was hit by love and it sounds true and real thou it was given a filmy touch. Guy chases the Girl, makes her fall in love with him and as usual cinematic parental opposition which leads to a split, but the girl takes a very  bold decision, thou it was convincingly brave, it fails in its purpose. A predicted climax served in a unique way, in a way which no one would have even thought. That was a pleasant surprise but not a good one for those who love happy happy endings.

I would say :
I loved the movie, it was awesome but slow, could have been shorter.

Plus:

  1. Music
  2. Plot, Screnplay
  3. Climax
  4. Cinematography
  5. Second half simbu

Minus

  1. Typical Gautham Menon film, hero is a Mech eng stud and he never gets his girl
  2. Trisha – everything about her and chinmayi’s voice doesnt even suit her
  3. Simbu doesnt fit the character in the first half of the movie, it was Surya-ishhhhhhh
  4. Length of the movie

After Minnale, Gautham menon has given importance to comedy, thou he didnt assign a dedicated comedy track, the movie is decently stuffed with comedy.

People who dont like Senti-Senti movies can stay away, this is not for you.

Lie is becoming an integral part of our life, my friend use to say that, in their religion there is a belief that for every lie you tell a mark will be made on your left arm and for every truth the same is done on your right, if that is true, then can we count the marks on our left arm? During olden days, people use to fear God/Parents, but that is not the case now, we fear neither.

Psychologists say that people lie for pleasure, if we contemplate, it will sound true, some believe that people get immense pleasure when their lie is believed undoubtedly. Most of us lie without even realizing that we are actually lying, one such is exaggeration.

Exaggeration is one form of lie,

  • We exaggerate day to day events,  just to make it sound more interesting and spicy
  • While teasing people  we exaggerate a lot.
  • Sarcasm often comes bundled with exaggeration. Buy one get one.

Lie is one of the bad outcome of human evolution, it takes us away from nature. Nature never lies, but we do.  Lie can  be categorized into many types and for every type we have our own justification.  We never realize how much we are bonded to lies, in fact we have tuned our ears to lies than to truth. We cannot stop it all of a sudden, but we should keep a count and a simple way would be,

For every lie you utter, drop one rupee in a box and at the end of the month open it in front of your friends and then donate it to a charity.

Two months since I blogged and its one of the longest period of hibernation.  I thought, it would be nice if it drizzles a bit after a long drought.

Life hasnt changed much in the past two months, but yeah, it did in the past one week, I never knew that I would blogging from SFO some 10 days back.  New country, New place, New people, hope that feeds me with lot of items to fill here.

‘United States of America’ – people here are very sweet, kind and gentle, but nothing is like being at home.  It feels like watching a movie, everything around is very new.  And yes, I am no exception to feel the cultural shock, just getting myself tuned.

San Francisco(SFO) is a very busy city, people are always running and it is a great experience to be here and one thing is that there are many Indians around esp in the bay area.  So lets see howz life at SFO and I believe it makes my blogging more active.

Thousands of articles and news coverages are on after India’s loss against England in a crucial Super 8 match, which knocked India out of the T20 world cup. People/Media are coming up with FMEAs for the loss, No use crying over spilt oil. Lets have a commercial break.

Sources say that they would have featured this add in the English’s  Strategy building meeting to KP and PC . Guess what, KP ordered a big box of Maha Choco from India and that is it.

Maha choco ki Diwaane nahi, MAHA DIWAANE hote hein,kyunki ye sirf chocolatee nahi, maha chocolatee hein.

P.S : Purely fictional!. Not intended to hurt anyone. Appologies, if it. Being a die hard fan, I was totally against doing this, but some one gave me Maha choco and I did this. ‘you will do anything to get the candy with the irresistible taste‘.

Color Blindness:

Color - Plus?

Color - Plus?

John Dalton, if alive can be proven wrong for his theory of Color blindness. I would say “Hey, John! you are wrong, people are still looking at colors”. For those who understood, yes I am talking about the skin color discrimination, people are yet to over come that and people are no longer color blind, they do see colors and they live with it. Dark skinned people are still considered to be treated second. Well this is not the case with everyone, but the theory of First impression is the best impression holds very true for Dark skinned people, they are not considered THE BEST unless people recognize the talent in them. Before getting further into the post, I would like to pre-state and make clear that “THIS IS NOT A GENERALIZATION, BUT THIS IS COMMONLY FOUND EVERYWHERE.”

One brilliant move:
I aint a great fan of Aishwarya Rai, but I got impressed when I read that Ash denied a fairness cream ad, stating that it would keep the discrimination fed. That was a very sensible statement and hats off.

The Affected:
Girls are the major victims of this color discrimination, be it be in movies, career or marriage, they are the first affected. Take any fairness cream ad, they definitely revolve around one of these concepts. Any ad will fit into this frame.

A fair girl(with dark look make up) would have missed a chance fetching a career or would have lost a marriage proposal or would have been teased for her color, returns home disappointed and the goody goody friends/parents will suggest a fairness cream and after that all the lost chances will fall under feet.

It reinforces a false belief in people, right from 3 yr old to 80 yr old, no one can claim that they are 100% free from this false belief, somewhere a small fraction of this still exists in each and everyone of our minds.
And I still feel that we are not so far from the day Gandhiji was thrown out of the train compartment.

Where is the Root?
There is no point in analyzing the source or where  it came from, there are so many factors that contribute to skin color racism – skin color stereotypes and prejudice. And all fingers point to THE SOCIETY which is no one else but US, we cant keep blaming our fore-fathers for setting up this trend, I agree they did it, they did it without knowing that it was a sin and we are doing it even after knowing it. So who is better? It is being popularized by many social outlets from the media to magazines.

How it branches?

White Skinned people are always given a first preference, this starts right from the school. Only a fair girl is preferred, be it giving a bouquet to the chief guest or receiving them from the dais.  Beauty when it comes to Girls and Brain when it comes to boys, only fair boys are considered to brilliant (‘padipps’) on first sight.

From root to branches

From root to branches

I would like to include something which I read in ABCnews

Colorism is especially prevalent in music videos. Kids we talked to on the street noticed that. And said they liked it.
“They all light skinned and they all look good,” one boy said.

“There’s a lot of dark-skinned girls that are pretty, with long hair, bad, but they’re not in the videos though, it’s just the light-skinned ones that’s in the videos,” another added.

“The darker the woman takes on what I refer to as a “Ho” complex. She is the prostitute,” said Karen a University of Maryland student. “The lighter a woman is, well, she’s the goddess. She’s the untouchable. She is the woman that all the men in the video aspire to have,” she said.

Very true isn’t? Take our cinema heroines for that matter, how many are dark skinned? leave heroines, even the dark skinned hero who claim that their color is their plus, are not ready to appear before cameras without color touch-ups. (Rajnikanth, Vijaykanth looks as lighter as their heroines in duets).

The myth then travels to college and then to workplace. Let me not get into the controversy, Survey results will stand for my point. I don’t want to discuss that here. Then comes marriage, most of the ads posted contains this word “Fair Looking or light skinned”. It holds good for both guys and girls, for girls it is a mandatory requirement, for guys at least if they are well settled, color takes the back seat. And it goes on, one simple example which we can see in day-to-day life, which even I faced being a dark-skinned vegetarian

Discrimination

Discrimination 2.0

Discrimination 2.0:
Of course now-a-days people don’t resist dark skinned people sitting next to them in bus, but discrimination is little aesthetic in this internet era, thou black is not discriminated, White is still kept above. Thou they don’t discriminate black obviously, they appreciate White. Even in a matured/educated crowd, it has just come down to teasing level, but no one can claim that it is completely eradicated. We cannot blame because we are soaked in it and it will take a very long time to get away, unless we take conscious effort it is not gonna die.

Obama’s Victory and American History:
Obama has won the election, that is just a news. A black has re-created history in America, it is a sensational news and who is creating this? MEDIA.  What made them emphasize more on Obama’s color than his caliber? Isn’t time to shed those old theories and start working on new things? Should we still pursue the black dream?

Color Vs Caliber:

Color vs Caliber debate is still one and to my knowledge I feel that color is taking the driver seat and if at all caliber does, even that is proclaimed as a milestone. Obama’s victory as an eligible candidate is not as much celebrated as Obama’s victory as a black eligible candidate.

Lighter skin “began to be associated with privilege and it became associated with beauty,” said Marita Golden, author of “Don’t Play in the Sun: One Woman’s Journey Through the  Color Complex”

This section would be incomplete if I don’t mention Micael Jackson, one question remains unanswered, if MJ wasn’t under knife, will he be MJ now? Be it a super-developed country like America or developing country like India or under-developed country like Nigeria one thing is common – it is the Colorism. No matter how much people grow, the venom of discrimination still runs in their blood and it keeps affecting others.

Color-plus?

Is being light colored a real plus? The society thinks so, we are still living with the white Supremacy. It is still imperative, it is not even high time, it is already late, if we don’t realize now then it is never gonna happen.

No one knows, the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice!  Sue the White Supremacy.

“Venilla Kabadi kulu” – I saw this movie over a period of two days, first half on Friday and second half on Saturday and now when I recollect, it looks as if i watched two different movies with same cast. Till interval the movie revolves around hero-heroine-kabadi and after that it revolves around hero-friends-kabadi. These days tamil movies have started following the trend of blunt/makeover  endings, AFAIK it started from Chennai – 600028, then Auto(Oram po) etc, the movie will be on its pace and suddenly a turn around will happen and that ends the show, audience are notified the end of show with a thank note or with the director signature. Initially it was quite different, but now it has become very usual phenomenon. You might have noticed one of the following things in climax

  1. Hero will die – the director would have ended hero’s life just for the sake of publicity
  2. Everyone will die in the movie – all lead characters and that too for no logical reason
  3. The movie will end without any conclusion – they claim that it is left to interpretations
  4. The movie will end abruptly before even going to a pre-final state.

We can keep growing this list, well venilla kabadi kulu definitely falls under one of these.

One thing which I loved about this movie is the romance, it was portrayed beautifully and we can feel the real village culture, how a girl approaches a guy and how a guy approaches a girl, no over-exaggeration as in movies which portrays city love and its 100% real – Seetha baat, no Bhakwas. Take for example Minnale, the so called all time favourite romance movie, which is a total non-sense.

Vennila kabadi kulu – Be it the first meet of hero and heroine or their last meet, its very plain, neat, elegant and simply amazing which makes it everygreen and as they say truth doesnt need any makeover.

Facebook Developer Garage Chennai Chapter is round the corner with just a day to go, first FB Garage meet in Chennai.

For those who are using FB only as a social networking suite, this will serve as a gateway to look FB in a new dimension and for developers this would be a good feast. There is not agenda set yet, my two cents

  1. Facebook Platform: Enuf guys there are already zillion apps that are developed for Facebook – Games, apps, IMs, groups etc etc etc, isnt it time for us to dive into the platform and do something about it. Facebook Open Platform, Thrift, Scribe, Cassandra, phpsh are few things that are closely associated with FB and are not as explored as FB app Development. Why dont we take a look at them and use it for developing loosely coupled Apps which should serve outside FB.
  2. Facebook Business model: Facebook has a wonderful business model, but why should only Facebook make money out of it, app developers are making money but we should take it beyond and here again thinking out of Facebook.
  3. Facebook Ads: FB Ads are slowly gaining momentum, it is the right time for us to ride on the wave – Use the platform – make the money.
  4. Facebook journaling
  5. Using the Social network face of FB for building Corporate Applications

Feel free to add-on. Lets meet @ the Garage – geared up!!!
