Another Google toolbar page rank update has just completed. It’s funny that this follows so soon after Google made a special announcement on their blog advising webmasters to stop obsessing about PR and how they deemed it so unimportant that they removed the PR info from Google Webmaster Tools Dashboards.
Yet they have done another update and while we all know that PR has little to do with ranking, which is what ultimately matters most, it is still cool to check out these PR updates. Several of my newer sites went to PR3 which was nice, though not sure how deserved, but I’ll take it!
When I did some research as to how the toolbar PR increases compare with rankings I found no cause and affect, the sites still rank the same even when they jumped from PR1 to PR2.
So how did you guys do in the PR update? Anybody lose PR, this seems to be going around?

It seems that the FCC has just announced that they will be fining all bloggers and social media posters up to $11,000 PER POST for promoting any company or product for which the bloggers has received monetary compensation or free products without disclousre to the reader.
Apparently in order to avoid this fine all bloggers and those who are posting promotional content on social media sites and their own blogs now need to disclose in the post when any monetary or product compensation for the endorsement took place.
The FCC sites that the reasoning behind this is to protect consumers and provide more transparency for the Internet surfer.
It is unclear as to the parameters of endorsement, I mean if I write a book review and I recommend the book, is that an endorsement, or what FCC considers advertising?
We can thank all the Internet scammers for this, as it seems that more and more fake blogs and false advertisements are being perpetrated on the net and the FCC feels the need to protect visitors.
Also, I’m not sure how easy it will be to enforce these guidelines, and the FTC admits that these are not exactly laws, but just guidelines, they say:
The Guides are administrative interpretations of the law intended to help advertisers comply with the Federal Trade Commission Act; they are not binding law themselves. In any law enforcement action challenging the allegedly deceptive use of testimonials or endorsements, the Commission would have the burden of proving that the challenged conduct violates the FTC Act.
So, I guess we need to watch our posts and paid reviews especially. I do not think this applies to affiliate links, this is only for those posts that endorse a product or company for which you were paid directly.
If you want to learn more about this and read the fine print, here is the link to the FCC doc, it’s a PDF file and the section that pertains to this regulation starts on page 55.
Personally I think this is just more of the government trying to regulate free flow of information on the net, and rescuing buyers from any personal responsibility.
The Internet is all about information, as a blogger do I not have the right for free speech and personal opinion? And as a consumer do you not have the responsibility to be vigilant?
What do you guys think about this?

The fold can vary of course, depending on the web platform, the template or the design of the site itself.
Also, remember that there are over 65 web browsers available that all render and display web pages in a different way so the fold can vary from browser to browser.
Use this great free tool to check out how your site looks in all the different browsers: Browser Shots
Optimal Ad Placement – Above the Fold
For marketing and advertising you will want to have your most important
ads, products and service promotions “Above the Fold”. This may seem elemental, but you’d be surprised how easy it is to forget.
I assume we are all trying to make money online right?
A good amount of money targets should be readily visible without the user having to surf or scroll the site.
Many times we tend to showcase written website content or information, and other “non money” stuff, instead of showcasing the money makers.
This is especially true for blogs that have the 2 sidebars on the right, where the 3rd one is usually not visible without scrolling. Time and again I see blogs that place their ads or Adsense units in that invisible sidebar, which makes it a gamble as to whether or not the user will ever see them and hence be given the opportunity to click on them and make you money!
If you’re main goal is to get subscribers then of course your website content should be the main focus, but if you are trying to make money then the content matters less and optimal ads placement is more important.
And this concept of advertising above the fold does not only apply to banners and ads, but also to the navigation menus and links to your money pages.
Always make sure that your navigation, whether in the sidebar or top nav bar is visible above the fold and slaps them in the face!
Always think maximum exposure to the money targets!
This concept not only applies to the home (index) page but also to the deep or inner pages with articles and written content. Place your ads and products between paragraphs, don’t let them get pushed to the bottom of the page because the user may not ever get there.
Never assume that the user will check out your entire site, the Internet crowd has a short attention span and they are the epitome of instant gratification.
PUT IT IN THEIR FACE, YOU MAY ONLY GET ONE CHANCE FOR THEM TO SEE IT!

Jeff Paul’s Shortcuts to Internet Millions
So what does Jeff promise?
…How bout $1,000,000,000 a week?
…Big cash flooding to your bank account immediately with his “secret Internet shortcuts” with only a couple of hours of work a week
…His system is full proof and the best part….
…He is committed to making me yet another millionaire like he did all those people on the commercial!
Plus…
Once I fork over a nominal fee of $39.95 to Jeff Paul, he will give me prebuilt websites that are ready to earn millions, as well as his Internet Shortcuts secrets and “I don’t have to do a thing”! (direct quote from Jeff)
WOW… So I pay Jeff, and he gives me instant prebuilt websites that will earn me at least $8,000 a week (like it is for all those people on the commercial), but more like $5,000 a day!
…Google won’t care that 2,000 other fools just bought Jeff’s great system, and will also be pushing the same mirror sites which are the exact definition of duplicate content, but that’s okay, because Jeff’s promises me that I can make thousands of dollars a week, instantly, with only a couple of hours of my time.
I don’t even have to learn Internet marketing, because Jeff’s system is totally automated and turn key, so all I have to do is pay Jeff for his “secret Internet shortcuts” system…and then start cashing in on the thousands of dollars that will just flood into my bank account.
And…
…Jeff’s promises that I don’t even have to know anything about the Internet or even how to use a computer! Joe on the commercial just testified that he is making $40,000 a month and he had never even logged onto the Internet before using Jeff’s Internet Shortcuts!
…and the best part? I will get rich while I sleep.
Jeff’s guarantees it so it must be so, right?
…And, Andrea, Bill and James all testified on Jeff’s commercial, that they went from bankruptcy to making $30,000 in their first week with Jeff’s Internet Shortcuts, then I can too!
…Jeff also promises that within a month of buying and using his Internet Shortcuts system I can be on a cruise, while money is flooding into my account.
…And all I have to do is pay Jeff $39.95
Only $39.95 for the secrets to making millions online instantly…what a great deal!

For all the newbies interested in Internet marketing and making money online let me tell you my Internet Shortcut Secret and you can send me half of what Jeff wants for his…
JEFF IS FULL OF SHIT!!!!
The reality of Making Money Online is….
…There are no shortcuts!
…You will not make even $1 in your first week, not even in the first month, and maybe not even in the first 6 months!
…It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, learning of correct skills and experience to make money online!
…Any cruise you take will be straight out of pocket and you will lose a week of valuable work time!
These are the cold hard facts Jeff!
I challenge Jeff Paul to show me one of his turnkey sites that makes him the 1,000,000,000 a week that he claims he makes, but, it can’t be the site where he shoves crap, like his “Internet Shortcuts” scam to desperate and naive people, and I will eat my shirt!
LMFAO!
There is a great report compiled from some very comprehensive data over at SEOMoz, that highlights the most important factors in ranking high in the SERPS.
The 2009 report, is a compilation of data from over 72 successful SEO’s. While there were not too many surprises, it’s definitely worth a look, check it out at: SEOMoz 2009 Ranking Factors.
The Top 5 ranking factors that are listed are pretty much in line with what most of us know, and of course #1 SERP ranking factor is still Keyword Anchor backlinks to the site.
#3 on the list is diversity of link source, which we sometimes over look and should be a focus since links from a variety of domains, IP’s and sources is important and will count much more for ranking. They also list the 5 top negative ranking factors, most of which are black hat strategies. Overall, it’s really a great read.
Also, make sure to check out their Link Building guidelines which is mentioned in the post, lots of great information there where they breakdown the effectiveness of link building from a variety of sources and methods, as well as, factors affecting the values of external backlinks. Great stuff, check it out!
Overall SEO Moz, provides some solid SEO info on their blog, so subscribe to their updates.

The test run is at http://www2.sandbox.google.com/ and an offer from Google to give your feedback, which is at the bottom of each SERP page.
I suggest you go over and search your keywords to look for any changes in SERP positions for your sites and to see how they may be affected when Google finally rolls out this update. I suspect that there have been some significant changes in the algorithm as far as link values go and that many sites may suffer.
What I have noticed for some competitive keywords I watch is a more content driven SERP results with Google favoring very aged sites that have a diverse link profile. Another change I noticed is fewer home pages on Page 1 and a lot more inner related pages.
I think this update will not be as heavy as the Big Daddy update was, but I do think that link values have changed somewhat, though it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact change.
Within content links on semantically related websites and pages are still the greatest in link value.
Matt Cutts Said:
“We’ve been shooting to get them [the results] pretty close [to "old" Google], so most people won’t notice a difference.” – Matt Cutts video interview
Google Caffeine Brings:
- Results reflect a more real time indexing of pages, which of course will lead to more frequent updates.
- Much larger index than Google had before.
- Real time information from social media sites seems to be ranking higher, which is indicative of Google wanting to provide searchers with the most relevant and recent information from sites like Facebook, Twitter and FriendFeed.
I have seen a lot of buzz going on about Caffeine, but overall I have not seen a huge change from existing SERPS.
What do you guys see in the SERP update? Any analysis of how your websites were affected, if at all and your analysis? This will help all of us, so please leave a comment!

The buzz is that this is a power play to try to even or over power the search engine playing field, which, as we all know is dominated by Google. It is a fact that Google gets over 70% of all searches online.

Data provided by Hitwise, February 2009
This merger will give Microsoft access to the Internet’s second-largest search engine audience and Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer stated in an interview, “This agreement gives us the scale and resources to create the future of search.”
Yahoo estimates an overall 500 million dollars in revenue as a result of this merger, as they will keep 88% of the money generated from all ads that run alongside search requests for the first five years of the deal, and it will save them over 275 million dollars in expenses to run its own search technology.
Reportedly Google tried to stop this merger by offering Yahoo a search advertising deal, but that was stopped when some U.S. antitrust officials threatened to sue.
Microsoft has big hopes for Bing and has launched a big campaign to promote their new SE in print, radio, online and TV ads.
Bing returns good results and has a lot of promise, and as of late some would argue better than those of Google’s for many search queries, since Google’s weird SERP changes that have been going on since late May.
The Merger and Internet Marketing
As an Internet marketer I welcome a more even playing field in the search engine market, because the Google monopoly is a big thorn in our sides. We all worry so much about Google and they can literally make or break our online businesses with just some SERP changes.
It would be nice to even out the competition and get more even traffic numbers across the board. Many of my sites rank in Bing and Yahoo, and it’s a shame that so little traffic comes via those sources.
Time will tell, with Google being as dominant as they it will not be an easy feat! Plus the fact that this deal is not expected to close until early next year, and then it maybe be another two years before all the pieces of the partnership are in place with antitrust regulators needing time to review the merger’s effects on the Internet ad market and of course to stitch the technologies together.

Enter a keyword and it will provide a list of questions related to that keyword that people are searching for. This is a great keyword tool to find what questions people have related to your niche. The phrases are pretty long tail and so they are great for website or blog content ideas, as well as for finding some good site-wide keywords.
Remember that adding content regularly to your websites, especially affiliate websites is important, it keep the site fresh, makes the search engine spiders visit a lot and brings more traffic when you have lots of pages all over the SERPS!

It has been a PR3 for at least 10 months and I am not sure what is up!
Spoke with some other webmasters who also had loses of PR in the last few days. I do not think this is a general PR update, but either a glitch or they are penalizing me for something, like selling links, which is funny because I have never sold a link in my life!
I really could care less about PR since the site still ranks Page 1 for it’s main keywords and for many inner pages and that is all that really matters, as it should be since I think I provide enough useful content and therefore have been lucky enough to get lots of natural links to this blog. But it is curious.
The SERPS are still wacked as I discussed in May-June SERPS shakeups and some of my sites are bouncing around page 5-7 on an almost hourly basis.
There is definitely an update or some tweaking going on with Google, that will hopefully end this month. Though veteran webmasters that I have talked with say that they have seen similar activity in the past and it could last thru the summer.
Interesting SERP Observations from other Webmasters:
- Many are reporting being hit for specific search terms and not sitewide. So while inner pages maintain ranking, home pages are being hit with a -50 in SERPS for certain keywords. And this is what I see as well.
- Lots of spam sites
- Irrelevant pages
- Previously penalized sites returning from penalties
- Many are using Bing, because Google’s results have been wacked
For the keywords I watch:
- Very few home pages on page 1, mostly inner pages
- ONLY aged sites, 3+ years and most 5+ years old
- The big guns are there (sometimes)
- Some domains that were bought aged and then crappy links added to them
- Old stale articles from Buzzle for buy keywords (which is lame)
- Page 1-3 results in keyword searches that are NOT in the title of the website
Time Will Tell
I personally think that links are being devalued and especially older links that are of low quality.
But, no one ever really knows what is going on with Google, as intended, all we could do is ensure that we have good content and quality links, everything else is a crap shoot and we’ll have to wait and see.

I can picture some geek engineers at Google sitting at THE BUTTON in some office and laughing their asses off reading posts like this as they send our sites to Google hell — hey you gotta laugh at times like these!
Anybody else having issues with SERPS or notice any PR changes in the toolbar?

The death of superstar Micheal Jackson is turning out to be one of the biggest phenomenons that is illustrating the power of online and mobile communication throughout the world and is really fascinating from an Internet marketing perspective.
On a personal note…
Let me say that I am truly saddened by this news. As my regular readers know, I came to this country from the former USSR in 1975 as a young child and Off The Wall was the first album I ever owned, yes in full on vinyl.
His music was my first introduction to American pop and dance culture and coming from the USSR with both of my parents being classical concert pianists this was certainly a change of pace.
That album and the many great songs that came after hold a lot of great memories for me and brought me lots of joy throughout the years.
It is truly amazing the kind of impact he had on people all over the world. I suspect that we will learn that his early death could have been avoided, as with the many celebrities who came before him and I really hope that he can find some peace in death that he could not find in life.
The unprecedented impact of Michael Jackson’s death on the Internet:
The news of Michael Jackson’s death had an incredible impact on the Internet with record breaking traffic and search volumes that actually shut down Google for about 26 minutes on Thursday afternoon because they thought they were being attacked.
Google Trends labeled Thursday’s searches for “michael jackson died” as “volcanic.”
Thursday was also a record-breaking day for Yahoo when their story, “Michael Jackson rushed to hospital,” received 800,000 clicks in 10 minutes, which made it its highest-clicked story ever.
Yahoo revealed that Yahoo News set an all-time record with 16.4 million visitors, beating the old record of 15.1 million set last election day. The four million visitors between 3-4 pm also set an hourly record.
Twitter reported 5,000 Jackson-related tweets per minute on Thursday afternoon.
Facebook reported status updates in triple numbers on Thursday afternoon.
AOL, whose AIM messaging service was knocked offline for 40 minutes Thursday, stated “Today was a seminal moment in Internet history. We’ve never seen anything like it in terms of scope or depth.”
The massive search volumes also affected, Bing, as well as mobile communications which saw an unprecedented amount of text and communications volumes as well.
From an Internet marketing prespective this is quite fascinating and shows the power and speed of information distribution that is the Internet.
I was watching to see who had the story posted first, as thousands of bloggers, both in news and celebrity fields took to their keyboards to spread the news.
TMZ.com broke the story first, with CNN and local news channels following closely behind, but apparently Wikipedia still won out over everyone, including Twitter and poor Google (:-)) that struggled to revive after the massive search volumes.
Here is an interesting post by SEO Moz, that lists the exact time line of the developing news online:
A Bad Day for Search Engines: How News of Michael Jackson’s Death Traveled Across the Web
And Google’s official blog posted an explanation of their downtime and a search volume graph that really illustrates the spike in searches best at: Outpouring of Searches for the Late Micheal Jackson
On a lighter note…
Don’t we all wish to have at least 5% of that kind of traffic???? Incredible really.

Okay well it seems that a June Google Page Rank update is underway right now, which is weird since the last one was just last month, but all my newer PRO sites went to PR1 or PR2, and 2 PR2 sites went to PR3 and other bloggers are posting the same updates on their sites.
And, this explains the shake up in the SERPS that I talked about the other day.
I do not think the update is done, because a couple of my sites went to PR2 which they surely did not deserve due to very few links, I’m not complaining but I think that it will go down.
Again for the newbies to this business, the toolbar PR is mainly useful for our own egos
and link building.
the real PR (the one that matters) is updated daily behind the scenes of the Google Algorithm.
The SERPS, traffic and sales is what really matters, but it’s always fun when the update comes around.
SERP Update:
Just checked the SERPS and they are still all over the place with odd page 1 results and several of my sites, though given an increased PR falling radically, so most likely they are not stable yet.
Do you guys see PR updates on your sites as well?
If you love the content buy me a coffee.Copyright 2009 JR's Internet Marketing Strategies. Visit JR's Internet Marketing Strategies for more great content.Have you guys checked your SERP positions lately? There are definitely some shake ups going on with Google and their algo.
A couple of my good aged site’s home pages just plummeted in the SERPS. One site, while it still ranks for other keywords, was pushed back to the black hole for a keyword that it has ranked for for over 1 1/2 years and the keyword is very low competition and now there is a whole lot of junk sitting on page 1 for that keyword.
And the same with other SERP results that are also showing a lot of crappy and spammy sites, as well as irrelevant sites.
Now in doing some reading around the web this seems to be an on going issue for many in the last couple of weeks with even aged authority sites losing major rank and sites dropping several pages in the SERPS. Coincidentally a very similar thing happened in June of 2008.
There also seems to be a pattern with index pages (home pages) losing rank while inner pages remain solid across the SERPS.
Now, while there will always be fluctuations in the SERPS , this seems to be something bigger and on a larger scale and similar shifts happen several times throughout the year.
Some guess that Google is trying out a new filter to catch paid links, and others think that the filter is negating blog comment links. I doubt the latter because my sites that lost rank have very few blog comments as backlinks.
Google just announced that they added external resource loading capabilities capabilities for Flash and indexing of flash, this may also be a part of this, learn more at Google Webmasters Blog post on this.
Really it could be anything. As that famous saying from The Godfather goes, “this is the business we’ve chosen” and dealing with Google SEO is always a roller coaster rider
I am not sure how major this one is, but I, as well as others do not think (at least I hope not) that this will last, most likely things will calm down and the SERPS will return to normalcy.
The most important thing to remember: DO NOT PANIC!
One of the biggest mistakes that webmasters make when their sites see a significant drop in SERP rank is to start making drastic changes on their sites.
1. This is often a mistake because it can trigger alarms and filters such that when the SERPS do return to some normalcy your changes may have adverse effects for your original rank positions.
2. The traffic is all that really matters. Another factor to consider is look at your traffic patterns, usually losing SERP positions for a couple of pages or even the home page will not affect traffic that much because most sites come up for lots of keyword searches, especially the long tails from inner pages.
This is where Google Analytics really comes in handy for analyzing those SERP patterns affects on your sites.
3. Remember to have faith in your work and if you are not doing anything extreme or super black hat then do not worry, just keep on working as usual, add some content to your sites, that is always a solid and safe route to take.
4. And also remember that this is probably not personal but a web wide change.
…Best thing to do in these types of situations is to wait it out.
If you go over to this thread in Webmaster World you will see a very interesting discussion on this topic with lots of webmasters sharing their experiences with this shift.
Have you guys noticed the SERP changes? Anyone lost major rankings?
