FILE - This is an April 19, 1972, file photo showing Travis Grant, all time scoring championship of Kentucky State University, posing after being presented with the Lapchick Trophy, in New York. He holds the trophy, right, and NBA and ABA basketballs. College basketball's greatest scorer shot his way over the poverty line with a tennis ball and a 5-gallon bucket tacked to his house. Travis Grant went on to win national championships, score more points than Pete Maravich and play professionally. Now, finally, that kid with the tennis ball is headed into the College Baketball Hall of Fame in the same class with Larry Bird and Magic Johnson.

Larry Bird and Magic Johnson will be inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame this weekend. They will be joined by some illustrious company. Bird and Magic have a pile of NBA championship rings between them and Johnson also has an NCAA title from his days at Michigan State. Joining them at Sunday's ceremony will be Travis Grant, the NCAA's all-time scoring leader with...

There was so much to talk about after No. 6 North Carolina held on for 77-73 victory over No. 15 Ohio State in the 2K Sports Classic semifinals Thursday night. There was the Tar Heels' big early lead that dwindled to two points in the final minute, something that can happen even to a sixth-ranked team early in the season.

Jim Boeheim walked into the postgame interview room and settled into a chair, hunching over with his chin tucked into his hand. When he finally spoke, the first words out of his mouth probably sent a shiver through Syracuse's future opponents. "I think that we can still be better offensively," Boeheim said.

When Minnesota's shots aren't falling, that aggressive, athletic defense is usually there as a fallback. This season, freshman Rodney Williams is fast becoming quite the safety net, too. Williams had 17 points, six rebounds and four steals in his first career start, helping 24th-ranked Minnesota pull away from Utah Valley in the second half of a 76-51 victory on Thursday.

John Calipari expected growing pains. Welcomed them even. Told anyone who would listen it would take time for No. 4 Kentucky to embrace and understand his "dribble drive" offense. Turns out, scoring points might be the least of Kentucky's worries. Though the Wildcats were never really in danger during a 102-92 win over Sam Houston State in the Cancun Challenge on Thursday, Calipari was...

On a good night, it's going to be tough to beat No. 11 Butler. When a team is as short-handed as Northwestern is, it's almost not a fair fight. Shelvin Mack's 15 points led four Bulldogs in double figures, Gordon Hayward had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Butler overpowered Northwestern 67-54 on Wednesday night.

Gary Johnson is a prime example of the depth No. 3 Texas has and what it means for the players. Minutes on the court will be limited. Get in the game, it's time to produce or it's back to the bench. "When you're out there, you have to do everything right. You have to play as hard as possible," Johnson said after scoring 10 points and grabbing seven rebounds in 19 minutes of...

Darius Miller kept waiting for John Calipari to lose it. Standing in the huddle on Monday night with No. 4 Kentucky trailing red-hot Miami (Ohio) by 18, the sophomore forward kept waiting for his coach to drop the player-friendly approach and start testing the physical limits of his clipboard. There was no tirade, the Wildcats got something else entirely.

In the rematch, Kansas missed the free throws and Memphis had the final shot. The Jayhawks won again, but not without a tougher-than-expected fight from the undermanned and supposedly overmatched Tigers. Cole Aldrich had 18 points, 11 rebounds and blocked five shots, helping No. 1 Kansas overcome a sloppy night to hold off Memphis 57-55 in a rematch of the 2008 national championship game Tuesday.

Whether the games were ugly or pretty, Georgetown found all sorts of ways to lose the close ones last season -- enough to sink the Hoyas down to the NIT. This year's home opener on Tuesday afternoon was as unwatchable as could be. Georgetown had more fouls (18) and turnovers (16) than made baskets (15), yet the No.
