This is just a preview of K-MeleonCCF ME with latest K-Meleon 1.6 + Gecko 1.91, nothing fancy here. Basically a K-MeleonCCF ME 0.096.4 + new K-Meleon 1.6 exe with new Gecko. More update stuffs will come later though.

Several things don't work obvious cause a lot of private K-MeleonCCF ME API are not available in the stock K-Meleon 1.6 exe, however most of functions are working fine include CCF ME adblock plus and lastpass etc..

I would like to let you know that I am still using K-Meleon and I think it is the time to start developing the new CCF ME version. The update will include a new K-MeleonCCF ME core and the latest Gecko with a much faster JS engine. However I cannot tell you when this version will be ready for the general public yet. "It will be released when it is ready..."

There is a major bug in previous 0.096.4 related with lastpass, and it's fixed now you can use lastpass. See usage.

Lastpass Usage:

When you first use Lastpass, please go to www.lastpass.com to create an account and login. You will see bookmarlets on your left when you login, click bookmarklets, then you will see 3 bookmarklets:

LastPass Login! LastPass Fill! LastPass Fill Forms!

Copy the link address, then open from toolbar Lastpass config window, then copy bookmarklets links to according textbox. Then you can use Lastpass.
(I will come up with better solution for lastpass later, but now you can use it.)

Note:
Lastpass service is a service from [lastpass.com] and it's not related with K-Meleon/K-MeleonCCF, and you need to have an account to use this service (It's a free and nice service anyway...)

The purpose to integrate this service into K-MeleonCCF is to provide a login/password saving mechanism without using sqlite in Gecko 1.9x to keep KM as lightweight as possible. And you will find out it's a nice way to use lastpass cause your info are stored online so nextime when you upgrade KM, you don't need to retype those info.)

With the new release of Opera 10 Beta2 and K-MeleonCCF ME 0.096 coming out, I decided to make a simple test of both browsers.

I) Memory Usage

First I am concerned of memory usage cause it's crucial for older system on which both browsers are popular.

1. Startup memory usage
At startup with no tabs open, K-Meleon cost less memory than Opera:



2. One website memory usage (www.cnn.com)
For testing the memory usage for just one website open, I delibrately open www.cnn.com to see which browser cost more memory:



K-Meleon only consumed half of the memory of Opera 10.

3. Several website memory usage
To see which browser can handle better memory usage when several websites open at the same time. I openned 6 websites:

4. Memory release performance
It's also important for browser to release memory when tabs are closed. So I closed all tabs in last test, the memory usage of both browsers after this is as follow:

II) Javascript performance

Thanks to the latest treacemonkey js engine from Mozilla, K-Meleon's JS performance is more superior than Opera 10: (Test page: [wd-testnet.world-direct.at])



III) CSS Loading performance

Opera 10 does have some speed advantages over K-Meleon, like CSS loading performance, with the test page:

IV) Results

From data above, you can see that if you have an older system with slower CPU and less memory, you want to use a fast, responsive and very customizable browser, K-Meleon is much better choice than Opera 10 in this sense.

K-MeleonCCF ME 0.096

As promised, there is going to be another Gecko 1.8x version coming out which will be labelled 0.089 version.

Currently this version is being tested and will make sure it works under Windows XP/Vista/7 with minimum problems.

The Gecko engine is updated with latest K-Meleon 1.53 which is pretty current and also might be changed to latest Seamonkey version if needed.

And with the test release, only a test gestures plugin which is compatible with Vista/7 aero enviroment is included, and this plugin doesn't include drag and drop functions, only basic gestures function for now. It will be updated in the final release.

This 0.089 version include most all of the latest functions you can find in CCFME 0.095 V3

This is only a Chinese version but can easily be set it to English anyway...

Update the Gecko to latest and update the speed dial with weather info (in Chinese) (Thanks to xiaog) After testing, seems like it has a little better stability at least here.

I 'm aware of those Win 7 RC1 users having some full screen/maximize problem, and the fix is under the way.

And I 'm trying to incorporate some new wallet like scheme into KMCCF at this moment however it might still take some more extra time.

+ Since at the end of Februray, Mozilla stopped the support for wallet component. Right now, KM cannot save/load password at this moment with Gecko 1.92a.

Since the report flashblock for K-MeleonCCF ME 0.088 is not working properly, here is an update of flashblock specific for this version. It has a flashplay button like the official flashblock extension in Firefox.

To use it, extract files into K-Meleon folder, if you already have a Profiles folder inside, you need to copy defaults\profile\chrome\flashblock.css file to Profiles\...\Chrome folder accordingly.

According to questions about future possible update for K-MeleonCCF ME 0.08x series, it is still possible to have patches for K-MeleonCCF ME 0.088 version however I would like to have this version to be the final version of K-MeleonCCF ME 0.08x series. To keep the code fast and clean, I won't introduce titleless design for 0.088.
