It's been a tough series for the Knicks. They've fallen behind 3-2, having been manhandled by the Pacers' front line, punished by Danny Granger's athleticism and burned by Lance Stephenson and George Hill from the outside. They lost Game One at home 102-95 and didn't seem to have any answers for the Pacers in Game Four (93-82), where going away from their small-ball ethos led to disaster. But despite all that, the Knicks won Game Five (95-85) to keep their season from ending. A win tonight will force the series back to New York and what is sure to be a raucous Garden for Game Seven, a game the Knicks will almost certainly be favored to win. But that's only if they can win tonight. So what do the Knicks need to do to get there? [ more › ]

Mayor Bloomberg can be a cascading fountain of unsolicited advice, gushing with wisdom about everything from dieting tips to iPhone safety to Wisconsin. On his WOR radio program yesterday, he gave some heartfelt advice to average people about the realities of education and debt: "The people who are going to have the biggest problem are college graduates who aren't rocket scientists, if you will, not at the top of their class," he said. "Compare a plumber to going to Harvard College—being a plumber, actually for the average person, probably would be a better deal." As Jesus said, "Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom Google Glass has been given." [ more › ]

Public Advocate Bill de Blasio's mayoral campaign got a major jolt yesterday when the city's largest union, Local 1199, made the decision to endorse his run. And though City Council Speaker Christine Quinn's been (grudgingly) touted as the favorite, this move could help give de Blasio a significant advantage. [ more › ]

Last year, NY Times film critic A.O. Scott complained about the Great GoogaMooga food festival taking over his and many others' beloved Prospect Park. This year, Scott was trying to immerse in defending his pan of Star Trek: Into Darkness but couldn't resist the allure of Googa-bashing, Tweeting yesterday: "was going to leave @GoogaMooga alone this year, but the footprint is larger and uglier than last time. Olmsted is spinning in his grave." [ more › ]

It's pretty clear at this point that Kanye West is releasing a new album in the next few months—between the cryptic tweets, tonight's SNL appearance, and the rants about not wanting to be humanized, all the hallmarks of a new album cycle are coming to the surface. Last night, West premiered one of the first songs from that album, "New Slaves," in classic Kanye fashion: by projecting a video of his giant head onto the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg. Watch/listen to the tune below. [ more › ]

[Update Below] A 32-year-old man was fatally shot in the middle of Greenwich Village after a shouting match last night. According to police, the victim was shot once in the head at the corner of West 8th Street and 6th Avenue near Gray's Papaya around midnight. “It was a quickie. He shot him and he went straight to the ground,” a bouncer at a nearby club told the Post. “Half his body was lying on the sidewalk and half was on the street.” [ more › ]

Citi Bike still has a week left to launch, but one of its shiny new docking stations is already sporting a nice little turd surprise: an EV Grieve reader spotted a pretty good-sized piece of poop sitting on the first station at East 13th Street and Avenue B this morning, and snapped a few photos to remind the rest of us that Citi Bike will probably succumb to a fate as a glorified public toilet soon—not that we couldn't use a few of those! For 17 years, the Brood II cicadas have been dormant underground, patiently biding their time while Daft Punk took over the world. Now that the humans have become distracted with their bike sharing and their pregnant Beyoncés, it is finally time for billions of them to emerge and become our entrees. And today in Virginia, we had the first sightings of the horny giant insects, as you can see in the gross video below. Moments like this, we're actually glad we don't have a backyard to serve as an unofficial sex pit. [ more › ]

Cell phone abuse at the theater is a chronic problem, one that the city of New York seems incapable of solving. It's telling that the story of Kevin Williamson, a theater critic who grabbed a woman's cell phone during a performance and threw it, has provoked such a huge response. Most of us are pretty fed up with cell phones ruining their theatrical experiences, and yet nothing ever seems to change. The reason why, it seems, is that there simply aren't any consequences beyond public shaming—and your average boorish jerk is typically incapable of shame. [ more › ]

Last year, a former NYPD officer sued the department for firing him, claiming that he was canned because a woman claimed he had flashed her. Owen Hopper argued that he could not have exposed himself to her, because she claimed her flasher was uncircumcised, but Hopper himself is circumcised. Now, a NY appeals court has upheld Hopper's dismissal. [ more › ]

In 2003 Chef Sue Torres opened Suenos, a casual, subterranean Mexican eatery in Chelsea with dishes elevated way above the rote taco-and-burrito joints around the city. Chef Torres received high praise from critics at the Times and elsewhere for her inventive and exciting cooking, which she refined during extensive travels throughout Mexico. The flavors and traditions of Oaxaca, Puebla, Yucatan and other regions of Mexico are evident throughout the menu, from the yellow mole common in Oaxacan cuisine to achiote, a type of spice found in many dishes from the Yucatan. In March, we learned than there will soon be new places for men to sit on couches when Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters open stores in Williamsburg. With the stores neighboring a Whole Foods and American Apparel (appropriately), this is set to create a Commercial Hipster Mecca that could stand as a tribute to wheat-paste sloganeers and futurism consultants. But it's not enough just to provide the classiest place to buy your knockoff Black Flag Four Logo shirts and Bushwick-branded sleeveless tees: Urban Outfitters also wants to get you drunk. [ more › ]
