Zendikar Spoiler!

When I was in Seattle for PAX, I went to a party for the newest Magic: The Gathering release. While I was there, the nice people from Wizards of the Coast gave me a few cards that I guess nobody else in the world outside of WotC had. This is one of them, an insanely awesome card that is apparently super duper ultra double secret rare.

This card has all those nifty holographic foil thingies all over it, and it looks beautiful when the light hits it just right. This picture doesn't capture that at all, unfortunately.

Some of the things I'm taking to PAX 2009: buttons, chapbooks, and the very few copies I have on hand of Sunken Treasure, Happiest Days of our Lives, and Dancing Barefoot. Not seen in this picture: a few paperback copies of Just A Geek.

a happy accident

A few months ago, a casting director needed to get a picture of me with my luxurious beard. Since I haven't had any headshots taken since I grew this magnificent beard, my son and I took my camera out onto the patio so he could take a quick picture that would be good enough for e-mailing on short notice.

While we were getting the shot set up, he was fooling around and took a picture of just my arms, folded across my chest. We laughed a bit, and I didn't think about it again until I'd uploaded the pictures into iPhoto, and they stacked up on top of each other the way you see here.

I didn't plan for it to end up this way, but I think it looks cool and weird, so I thought I'd share.

You know, you can sing this title to the tune of Sunday Papers, by the great Joe Jackson.

It also makes a nifty image to introduce this tiny set of pictures.

OMG COVER UP THE JUNK

This statue is a replica of something famous (I can't remember which one and art history isn't my strong suit) but while it doesn't have arms, it had quite the package.

Apparently, if people see a statue's package on television, Baby Jesus kills a kitten, so the art department painted leaves and used them to cover up the offending hangy-down bits.

I thought it was hilarious that they had to do this, even though the statues were just in the background, and any sane person would be looking at Chris Kane or Noa Tishby.

Somebody set us up the bomb

...and it was me. [SPOILER ALERT]

They used this little HD hand-held camera to take the security camera footage.

During one take, this woman came up to me and wanted to smell the flowers. She was oblivious to the massive film crew everywhere, and we were rolling, so I just stayed in character, politely told her that I was dropping them off for a friend as a surprise, and let her smell them. She thanked me and walked right out of the shot.

Let there be light

This light is helping provide illumination for the interior of Sophie's apartment. I took it because I always think it's neat that we use all this equipment and stuff to do something as simple (and complex, really) as allowing the perfect amount of consistent light into a room for a scene.

I'm Wil. I'll be playing the part of the Orange X.

When we shoot a TV show or a movie, we often have to cheat our looks closer or farther away from the camera during our closeups.

Most of the time, the place we're supposed to look is marked with a piece of tape, like an orange X, for example.

When we shot the "showdown" sequence on Leverage, Aldis and I both had to cheat our looks on most of the shots, but there was one set up where I was able to stand just to the side of the camera for him. We were feeling silly that day, so I grabbed some tape and put an orange X right on my forehead.

"Hi, I'm Wil, and I'll be playing the part of the Orange X," I told him.

We all laughed, and I spent several minutes describing the different choices I make for different colors of tape.

"Playing the Red X is very different from playing the Blue X, and though I've tried my best, I've never really been able to nail playing a Green X."

(Thanks to Marc Roskin, who took this picture with his iPhone and e-mailed it to me.)

Ferris Wheaton

My dog Ferris, who was rescued from a bus stop in Monrovia by my wife Anne almost 8 years ago, had a heart attack and died this morning. It happened very quickly, and I was with her, which is supposed to make me feel better, but at this moment all I can feel is nearly-unbearable sorrow and the empty space in my life left behind by my awesome dog.

Bye bye, Ferris. I love you and miss you. You were the best dog ever.

Waiting to promote Stand By Me on Good Morning America in 1986

I forget what day this picture was taken, but it was 1986, right after Stand By Me had been released. There we are, sitting on chairs in the green room, waiting to go be interviewed by (I think) Ron Reagan, Jr. It was my first trip to New York, and I remember how excited I was to go to that huge, almost mythical city, see Times Square, ride the subway, visit the Statue of Liberty, and hang out with Jerry in his home town.

This photo captures our personalities perfectly: River and Corey are focused and serious (Corey is even wearing a tie and drinking coffee!) I am listening to the same person they are, but I'm not even trying to contain how excited I am to be going on a television show that I had been watching with my Aunt Val since I could remember, in front of the whole country, no less.

My favorite part of this picture, though, is Jerry. It's almost like he caught my mom or dad taking this picture of us, and decided to strike a pose, just to be silly. I just love that he isn't taking the thing too seriously, and that he's just having fun and enjoying the whole thing. As I got older and began to feel like the teen magazine publicity stuff was taking over my life, it stopped being fun, and it started to feel like a chore. I always envied that Jerry seemed to take it all in stride, keep it in perspective, and just have fun with it.

(There's more in my blog.)

Atari!

We still have Anne's original 2600 from 1977. I couldn't get it to start up, so we used the Atari Flashback and decorated the television (which we put on the floor, naturally) with a bunch of classic Atari 2600 carts.

Anne's 80s backdrop

Anne made this out of supplies from the art store. It's an entirely original design, but we both thought that it ended up looking like something you could have bought from Prints Plus in the Glendale Galleria in 1987.

Pin the sunglasses at night on Corey Hart

Anne's friend Michelle is a great artist. She created a Corey Hart album cover in the style of the Take On Me video, so this would be 80s to the max. We hung it on the wall in our living room, and played pin the sunglasses at night on Corey Hart. It was pretty awesome.
