Mike Melito dropped me a line about a gig at The Clarissa Room this next Friday, September 1st, from 9:30pm to 12:30am. No cover. In addition to Mike on drums, the band includes Bob Sneider on guitar, Phil Flanigan on bass and Mike Dubaniewicz, who plays in Maynard Ferguson’s band, on alto saxophone. I’ve added Mike’s website to the local musician links (sorry, Mike…).

Blue Note Records has announced that it will make available cell phone ring tones of classic jazz riffs from its legendary label names like Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver (and the list goes on). Check the article on Allaboutjazz.com here, or a page from Blue Note’s site here (they’re pretty much the same article, but Allaboutjazz.com has already archived it so the address is less likely to change). The “Best of the Blue Tones” ringtones are portions of the actual tracks, not cheesy remakes that sound like a Casiotone keyboard from the 80s. Blue Note is working with a variety of carriers worldwide to make them available, so watch for them at your favorite ringtone location.
I just recently joined the ranks of us downtrodden masses on the cell network. One of the first things I did was download a jazz ringtone—the first few lines from Coltrane’s Giant Steps. The problem is I just don’t want to answer the phone until he’s done . . . (I know, you’re all saying “that’s a problem?”)
Although Jazz@Rochester does not often venture outside the metropolitan area, local jazz sax player Bill Tiberio’s group will be opening for smooth jazz greats The Rippingtons at the Glenora Wine Cellars “Jazz Greats” Concert. Sorry about the late notice, but the concert is tomorrow (Sunday, August 20) from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. Tickets are $25. Glenora is located at 5435 Rt. 14 in Dundee, NY; 30 miles south of Thruway exit 42. You can call 800-243-5513, or purchase tickets at any Wegmans store.
This is just wrong. I’m so sorry for anyone that may be a “regular” reader of this blog, but I haven’t been doing enough with it. Part of it has been that some of the time I would spend on it has been focused on making some touches to the rebranding of the blog, which I hope to launch before the month is out. Of course, the rest of it is the usual “complaints” we in upstate Western New York have this time of year: nice weather, lots of festivals, many invites to this or that, and a general lack of enthusiasm for sitting in front of a screen typing. Some great festivals in the city this weekend (check out the City Paper’s music listings for them here), including Clarissa Street Reunion and the new Boulder festival in the Wedge. Well, here are the listings for the next seven days.

Obviously, I have been having trouble posting recently. Had some work come up that has been taking most of my off-work (oh, yeah, this isn’t from my 9-5) time up. City Paper missed one highlight for this week. Tenor sax player Don Menza will be playing with Bob Sneider on Friday, Aug 4th, in the bar at the Strathallan, just off East Ave., from 9:30 pm - 1:00 am. Menza, born in Buffalo, played with Maynard Ferguson, did a short bit with Stan Kenton, and worked with Buddy Rich, Elvin Jones, and Louie Bellson. Check them out in the Strathallan’s intimate space (go early so you can sit in those great leather couches…).

One of my favorite albums is Stan Getz’s Getz/Gilberto on Verve, which brought together saxophonist Getz and Brazilian Joao Gilberto on an album that defined bossa nova and really brought that wonderful music to the rest of the world. Mostly songs of the great Brazilian songwriter Carlos Antonio Jobim, it turned out that it was Gilberto’s wife, Astrud, who sang on the track of “The Girl from Ipanema,” who became an international sensation in 1964 when the album was released and the song became one of the smash hits of jazz. Although it isn’t the best song on the album, it is just right for summer (the entire album is, actually) and is on heavy rotation in my CD player. I recently ran across this somewhat kitchy video on YouTube with Astrud singing that hit (and that is Mr. Getz there, too) and thought you might enjoy:

Local website (or is it a blog or is it an art/music/word happening), the Refrigerator has come to my attention before. Well, the Refrigerator has added another Club Pass to its collection, with a whole new crop of great pictures from the 2006 Rochester International Jazz Festival. This is one of the best collections of photos and descriptions of the RIJF available, so check it out!
The city that is only a short hop, skip and jump-jive down the Thruway, Syracuse, will be having its own international jazz festival, Jazz in the Square 2006, on July 27-29. This year’s Jazz in the Square, while not holding a candle to our own RIJF, will feature major artists on the mainstage in Clinton Square, the heart of downtown Syracuse. Two other downtown stages present jazz in many forms. Additionally, the festival opens with a symphonic jazz concert featuring the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra with a night of great swing featuring a special guest jazz artist. Some of the artists who will be appearing in this year’s Jazz in the Square include:
-
Branford Marsalis
Chuck Mangione
Joyce Cooling
Criss Cross All-Stars
Sipiagin/Reid Quintet
Danny Sinoff Quartet
Nancy Kelly and the Syracuse Symphony
CNY Jazz Orchestra
The Breakers
According the website, there will also a “Jazz Alley” restaurant row and wine court in Clinton Square, late night jam sessions in the “Jazz Central” arts center, and jazz and funk groups populating the downtown club scene surrounding Clinton Square , and strolling jazz groups will perform on streets.
Although there is water in your basement and water in that low place in your yard, there is jazz in and around Rochester this week. Please forgive my failure to post much in the past week. I was in Toronto over the weekend (lots of fun) and much of my “blog” time has been spent recently working on the next incarnation of Jazz@Rochester, currently in development. The Point of Departure is an online journal (a blog) by William Shoemaker discussing jazz music. Trending toward the freer and avant-guarde side of the jazz world, it makes for some interesting reading and has links to things you won’t find at sites like allaboutjazz, which Shoemaker describes as the U.S.A. Today of jazz websites. Point of Departure was nominated for a 2006 Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Award for Best Website Concentrating on Jazz.
You can check out Rochester’s Jimmie Highsmith, Jr. with Tyler Owens at the 12th Annual Rochester Musicfest on Sunday, July 9th 2006 Location: Frontier Field. They’ll be playing right before the headliner Cameo at 8:55pm, following a performance @ 8pm by Rochester’s Mambo Kings. Tickets are on sale now at the Frontier Field Box Office or by calling (585)423-WING (9464) and at all Ticket Master locations (585)232-1900 or online.
Hoping that one of these days I’ll be able to get my sorry butt out to one of these shows sometime soon (going to Toronto this weekend for the Fringe Festival, but perhaps next week?), but until then I’m your dutiful reporter of jazz happenings here in Rochester, with the help of the City Paper, that is:
