Those who judge Josh Turner’s outstanding third album on the basis of its simplistic, trifling lead hit single, “Firecracker,” are in for a surprise when they dig into the whole thing. Writing or co-writing seven of the 12 cuts here, Turner shows he has a handle on deeper, more nuanced feelings than “Firecracker” offers, and he brings them to vivid life with his expressive, rumbling bass voice. Sticking to a basic band accompaniment — acoustic and electric guitars, pedal steel, fiddle, dobro, propulsive rhythm section — supplemented here and there by acoustic and electric keyboards, synthesized strings and expressive backup choruses, Turner’s unaffected singing is showcased to maximum emotional impact. This is especially true on the yearning ballad, “Another Try,” rich in strings and enhanced by Trisha Yearwood’s incandescent harmonizing; and more so on the ambitious, five-minute mini-epic, “The Longer The Waiting (The Sweeter The Kiss),” a love letter from a sailor making his final voyage and appealing to his lover to wait for his return. In a voice by turns strong and determined and soft and pleading, Turner appeals his case in plaintive tones and terms; behind him, the arrangement surges and recedes, like waves on his mythical ocean, its moody atmosphere defined by a guitar twanging as lonely and desolate as Phil Upchurch’s in Dee Clark’s “Raindrops,” and the distant, haunting sound of whistling. But he has plenty of fun when he kicks out the jams too, most notably on the bruising barnburner, “Trailerhood,” which extols the laid-back virtues of mobile home life and gains added sizzle from a lively set-to between Brent Rowan’s sputtering electric guitar and Steve Hinson’s serpentine steel guitar exhortations. Everything Is Fine is country like it oughta be.

About Josh Turner:

A native of Hannah, SC, deep-voiced Josh Turner burst on the country scene in 2003 with the powerful “Long Black Train,” a song Turner had written after listening to a Hank Williams box set. Sounding like a gospel-blues out of the 1940s, “Long Black Train” wrestles with the grand themes of temptation, salvation, death, and redemption, and the song quickly brought Turner national media attention. His first album, Long Black Train, produced by Frank Rogers, was released by MCA in 2003. Prior to the album release, Turner had issued two 7″ vinyl singles, “She’ll Go on You” and “Long Black Train,” both backed with the same B-side, “Backwoods Boy.” A second album on MCA, Your Man, was released in 2006 and reached number two on the Top 200. The impressive Everything Is Fine appeared in 2007, again from MCA Nashville.

Kevin Costner is best known as an actor, director, and producer, and he
has been involved in many movies, including The Bodyguard, Field of
Dreams, Dances with Wolves, The Untouchables, and Silverado, but he has
always been close to music, learning guitar and piano as a kid and
singing in church choirs and school productions. He began performing as
a musician before his movie career took off, sparked by meeting John
Coinman in Los Angeles during an acting workshop. The two began playing
and writing music together, forming the band Roving Boy with mutual
friend Blair Forward. Roving Boy had some modest success, releasing an
album, Simple Truth, and even scoring a number one single in Japan, but
as Costner’s film career took off, there wasn’t a lot of time for music
and the group grew more inactive, although the three friends would still
get together to play and write behind the scenes on occasion, and now
and then would hit the stage for a quick gig. One such performance in
2005 made Costner realize how good playing music felt, and he began to
find more time to spend with the band. Adding Teddy Morgan, Larry Cobb,
and Park Chisolm to the lineup and changing the band name to Kevin
Costner & Modern West, the group began working on an album, Untold
Truths, which was released in 2008 by Universal South.

Country singer and guitarist Jason Aldean was born in Macon, GA, in
1977. His parents separated when he was three years old, and he spent
his childhood with his mother in Macon through the school year while
spending the summers with his father in Homestead, FL. He fell early
under the spell of country music and made his first public appearance as
a singer at a VFW hall in Macon when he was 14 years old. Soon he was a
regular at area talent contests, and a year later he joined the house
band at Nashville South in Macon. Aldean began pursuing a music career
on a full-time basis following his graduation from high school and, with
his father as a booking agent, was soon gigging in college towns
throughout the Southeast and up and down the Eastern Seaboard. Aldean
privately financed an eight-song CD during this period to sell at shows,
recording it in Nashville in 1996. Michael Knox spotted Aldean at an
Atlanta showcase a year or two later, and signed the singer to a
songwriting contract with Warner-Chapell Publishing, which allowed
Aldean to move to Nashville in 1998. When a couple of recording deals
fell through and his songwriting contract was about to expire, Aldean
was on the verge of giving up on the music business when he attracted
the attention of the independent label Broken Bow Records, which
released his debut album, simply called Jason Aldean, in 2005. Aldean
returned to the studio in January 2007 to work on his sophomore release,
Relentless. The album, featuring the single “Johnny Cash,” hit stores in
May.

Kira left her home in Copenhagen at the age of 17 to pursue her dream of playing in a rock’n’roll band. She found at first a man, then a band and the source of much joy, but mostly trouble, in the foreign lands of which she traveled like a modern day gypsy . Her journey led her through many parts of the world, but for many years her base was in London and L.A.

It wasn’t however, until the break-up of her first band, where her former patner primarily provided the songs, that she seriously dived in to the therapeutic process of writing on her own. Drawing from her experiences of relationships and her life on the road, she created a musical world, of deeply personal songs, with a rough edge and moody tales, in a style which she her self labeled “soul punk”, since none of the obvious categories fit.

After 8 years away from home, Kira returned to Copenhagen, put a band together (myspace/kiraandthekindredspirits) and released her first album (“Happiness saves lives”) in 2002. Five years on, she has released 4 albums in Denmark. One of them being with her side-project The Gospel, co-written and produced by Tore Johansson (Franz Ferdinand, Cardigans est.), who also produced her two latest albums (“This is not an exit” and “Kira and the Kindred Spirits”.

Throughout this period, she has played more than 300 concerts, to great critical acclaim and much loved by her devoted audience. In 2007 she received a Grammy in Denmark for “Best female Vocalist”, as well as receiving an award from Denmark’s largest music-magazine Gaffa, voted by their readers. She continues her manic pace of writing and performing and is currently working on the first album to be released in her own name. Stay tuned.
