Recently I’ve switched to dual monitor setup to improve productivity, and additional  LG Full HDTV for movies, I’ve three screens: 2 No.s of Dell 2209WA and third is a 42” Full HD LG LH70YR and I’ve connected all these three screens to the Palit ATI 4870 Dual Sonic graphics card using two DVI port for Dell Monitors and TV with RGB Analog, here I will tell you how to manage multiple screens with ATI Catalyst Control Center, But there is one catch you can only drive 2 screens at a time with 48xx series of cards, the current generation of cards like 5850 and 5870 could run upto 3-6 screens at a time, the procedure is same.

 

After connecting the displays fire up ATI CCC (Catalyst Control Center), Go to Advanced Settings

It will open this screen

Notice the Three screens “Desktop 1” , “Desktop 2” and “Attached Displays Currently Disabled”

Here Desktop 1 and Desktop 2 are my two Dell 2209WA monitors and disabled display is the LG TV.

How to Swap Display using Catalyst Control Center – Managing dual, triple screen setups

Now there is no proper documentation for switching displays without turning off the displays and changing connections, but I’ve found a way, all you have to do is click –> drag the disabled display onto the “Desktop 2” , a message will popup “Swap Devices” click on the that, the second desktop will now turned off and third display will come to life. Yes it is simple as that.

 

Desktop 2 in red is the LG TV, one 2209wa is now disabled. I am using extended display option, so Desktop 1 always remain my primary display and I switch between LGTV and second Dell monitor, when switching from dell to LGTV I have to change the resolution to 1080p for LGTV and while switching back it automatically detects resolution of Dell monitor, maybe this has to do with analog and digital connections.

If you have 58xx series graphics card you can manage multiple displays even more than 3 displays this way, a right click on respective “Desktop” inside CCC will give you more options like cloning desktop, rotating deskop, stretching desktop etc.

Sony has developed a new 3D prototype device that lets you view objects and images in 360 degree view in 3D inside of a cylindrical device measuring 10.6" x 5.1", the best part is, images on it can be viewed without wearing any special 3D glasses and from all angles the view is the same. It supports 24-bit, 96 by 128-pixel stereoscopic color images as of now.

Sony is quoting various applications like digital signage, medical studies, virtual pets, digital photo frame, web shopping etc, It will be displayed at the Tokyo’s Digital Contents Expo tomorrow.

Really Simple Syndication Or RSS has changed the way how we access information today. They can be synchronized to desktop applications or even your smart phones. In the world of Web 2.0, most of the sites provide Feed of their streams but still there are some static sites which lack the feeding functionality, or even if they are dynamic they still don’t offer RSS feeds for purpose.

Page2RSS provides a very simple interface to track static or non-feed pages. All you have to do is just visit www.page2rss.com and enter the url of the page you wish to track. If the page is already monitored if some other user has already entered the same then it will show you result for past changes else a new feed will be created and is updated daily with the changes in that page.

How to use the feed?

Now what all can you do with this feed? Either go and track straight to your mobile via FREE SMS using Google SMS Channels or just add it to your feed reader. Notify.me has also signed a deal with Page2RSS and offer you a very simple way to track any page. Just add zeus@agents.notify.me as your friend in Gtalk or Gmail and send the link to the bot as IM message. It will automatically update you back each time when there is change in page via IM message. Sounds cool, isn’t it?

Where can you use it?

Well there are countless number of uses for this. You can track your shipment, even if the shipper site does not provide an RSS or you can track your university website for when your result is on air. Here is an example feed generated for Google which shows the various occasional doodle changes on the main page of Google. Its usability is limited by your imagination!

F-Secure has released a new Internet Security 2010 software featuring redesigned interface coupled with very easy to use parental control features that you can setup during your initial installation while F-Secure is downloading updates in the background, this new build is easy on system resources and F-Secure claims to have 60% faster virus scans than the previous version.

Our installation of the F-Secure Internet Security 2010 on a test PC having C2D E6320 and 2.5 GB RAM was finished in around 1 minute, after a restart and verification of the key, it showed the programs requesting Internet access like Steam client and others installed in our system, after clicking allow couple of times we were good to go , downloading updates  and further installation took another 15 minutes on our 1 Mbps connection.

The parental control settings in the F-Secure 2010 Internet security  are one of the easiest out there, so lets have a look at the parental controls

Better Content blocking based on cloud computing technology

System Scanning- Virus, Spyware removal

The overall speed of the scanning was good, our almost full 160 HDD including lots of software, games, applications,  was scanned in 1 hours and 4 minutes, however there isn’t a pause scan option while scanning the hard drive so if you stop  the scan, you would have to run it again from scratch. Pause scan option is particularly good when you just want to Hibernate your PC after pausing the scan and then turn it on later to resume scan from where it left, very helpful these days as HDD capacities have grown manifolds and scanning takes time. It detected all the viruses we have in our virus-pendrive with ease and the Anti-Spyware was pretty hard on the advertising agencies, and detected their tracking cookies as Spyware.

Other thoughts: After installation of F-Secure our Local Area Network stopped working, we weren’t able to access files of our test PC from other PCs on LAN, Even after configuring again with the Windows “Set up a home or small office network” it didn’t work, nor does it showed any warnings or asked for permission. I have to set this up manually by  going to Settings -> Firewall -> Firewall Settings -> Trusted Network Adaptor -> Select your Network Interface Card.

It was not able to detect our LAN IC on our Intel DG965RY motherboard, after selecting the network IC, local network access was restored. This might be a problem specific to our system.

Pros and Cons of F-Secure Internet Security 2010

Pros :

• Very Easy on System Resources
• Great Design and User Interface
• Provides superb protection, it was able to detect and clean 4 viruses on our test system, which up to date free Avira couldn’t.
• Easy to Set-Up
• Good and easy to use Parental Control Settings
• Browsing Protection
• Statistics: provides quick overview of security history
• Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware and Anti-Spam protection in one package
• Compatible with Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP

Cons:

• While performing full system scan, System got noticeably slow and  CPU usage went to as high as 75%, 10% being average
• No Pause Scan  button
• Didn’t Detect LAN card automatically (this could be specific to our system)

The next generation of graphic cards ATI Radeon HD 5870 and HD 5850 boasting of DirectX 11 support and ATI Eyefinity technology are now available, these video cards support upto 3 monitors and resolution upto 2560×1600 per display, 6 screen support will eventually come out in November with a new version of 5870 graphics card with 6 mini display ports. HD 5800 series of graphics cards also supports dual, triple and quad ATI CrossFireX multi-GPU technology.

ATI HD 5870 and 5850  GPUs are developed on the advanced 40nm fabrication technology containing massive 2.15 billion transistors and additionally the streaming processor units, texture units and ROPs are almost doubled in comparison to ATI 4870 and 4850 GPUs respectively. My 6 months old Dual Sonic 4870 graphics card is already feeling older, I  might even sell it to make way for new GPU chips, the performance that these cards provide and their price point makes them the only graphics card you should buy if you are in a market for a  higher end graphics solution as of now.

Power consumption

Apart from double performance ATI has attained another feat in power consumption, 5870 graphics card consumes only 27 watts at idle and 188 watts at full load when used with single display whereas 4850 consumes 27 watts at idle and 170 watts at full load with single display, with two displays the idle power will be doubled.

Price of ATI HD 5870 and HD 5850

The new video cards are priced at sweet $259 for HD 5850 and $379 for HD 5870, the prices will come down a bit once ATI releases new cards in November or if NVIDIA comes out with its lineup of DirectX 11  cards.

India Price would be around Rs 17,000 for HD 5850 and  Rs 25,000 for HD 5870

There is a good news for Windows Vista users, the new DirectX 11 standard which is the latest version of DirectX used in the Windows 7 OS would now become available to Windows Vista users on Service Pack 2, if you are on older version  of Vista you need to upgrade to Vista SP2 to be able to use the latest platform in DirectX gaming. ATI has recently launched its newer DirectX 11 graphics card with Eyefinity technology having massive resolutions that you might have not even dreamt of until now. ATI presents the "Evergreen" GPU based on the 40nm manufacturing technology capable of delivering 11,520 x 4,800 - 55.3 megapixels on 24 screens with four cards using crossfire in a single PC, that is one hell of a resolution, a single Evergreen card can power upto six screens at any given time, you can use them as a large single display or make them to act as different units like your very own control room using the ATI control center. NVIDIA for sure have a lot of catching up to do now.

ATI Eyefinity will be launching soon, early Evergreen DirectX 11 cards will have support for 3 screens, later builds will include support for 6 screens and crossfire too. More coverage of the technology at links below each images.
