The Supremes - Rodgers & Hart Collection

The Supremes Sing Rodgers & Hart is a 1967 album recorded by The Supremes for Motown. The album is wholly composed of covers of show tunes written by the songwriting duo of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. The album was the final album released before The Supremes' name was changed to "Diana Ross & the Supremes", and member Florence Ballard replaced by Cindy Birdsong. Originally intended as a double album, The Supremes Sing Rodgers & Hart was halved before Motown issued it in May 1967. In 1986, two unreleased tracks from the Rodgers & Hart sessions were included in the Diana Ross & the Supremes' 25th Anniversary collection. Several more were included alongside the original twelve LP tracks on The Rodgers & Hart Collection.

The Miracles - City Of Angels (1975)

City of Angels by The Miracles, released on Motown Records' Tamla label in September 1975. The group's fourth album recorded after replacing lead singer Smokey Robinson with Billy Griffin in 1972, City of Angels is a concept album, depicting of a man from "Anytown, U.S.A." who follows his estranged girlfriend Charlotte to Los Angeles, where she has gone in hopes of becoming a star. All of the tracks on the album were written by Billy Griffin and Miracles bass singer Pete Moore. Freddie Perren and Moore served as the album's producers.
The album's first single, Love Machine, peaked at number-one on the Billboard Hot 100, and was a multi-million-selling Platinum single, becoming the most successful single of The Miracles' career. Its success conicided with the rise of the disco craze of the late 1970s. Another song on City of Angels, Ain't Nobody Straight in L.A., caused controversy due to addressing the subject of homosexuality: "Ain't nobody straight in L.A./It seems that everybody there is gay"
Interestingly, although this album's cover depicted The Miracles'"star" on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, the group didn't,at the time , have such a star back in 1976. However, life eventually did imitate art, as The Miracles were so honored with just such a star in Hollywood on March 20,2009. City of Angels reached 33 on the Billboard 200 albums chart in the United States, and peaked at number 29 on the Billboard Black Albums chart. The Miracles' City Of Angels was also a Platinum album with over 1 million records sold.

Turbulence (Lalo Schifrin Orchestra) - Night Flight

Lalo Schifrin did no more than produce this all-disco date (probably in or around 1979) but did none of the composing, arranging, conducting or even any of the playing he's often alleged to do here. Still, it's pretty good for disco, if that's your bag. The titles favor a flying theme Turbulence, which was the name of the original album, Supersonic, and Ticket to Tomorrow and the vocalists 'ooh' and 'ahh' throughout as if it was the greatest sexual thrill ride imaginable. Honestly, though, it stands strong among most European disco of the era.

Teddy Pendergrass - This Christmas

The legendary R&B singer Teddy Pendergrass passed away on January 13, 2010 after battling colon cancer. Teddy was 59. Teddy’s tremendous career included numerous platinum albums, and three decades of top hits such as, “Close the Door”, ”Joy” and “It Should’ve Been You”.A five-time grammy nominated singer, Teddy didn’t let becoming a quadriplegic in a 1982 car accident stop his love for singing and pleasing his many fans. Teddy’s career began when he sang the popular, If You Don’t Know Me By Now, as lead Singer for the Philadelphia soul group Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. This role lead him into his own solo career. In 1977, Teddy released his self-titled first album. Seven more albums followed on the Gamble & Huff’s Philadelphia International Records label. He then moved on to record with Warner Music’s Asylum and Elektra label.

This Chrismas (I'd Rather Have Love)

Teddy Pendergrass's distinctive husky voice and soul-man persona turn Christmas standards and inspired originals throughout This Christmas (I'd Rather Have Love) into a lovable Tedfest. While many similar records and their singers tend to overproduce and oversing holiday work, Pendergrass and company keep the schlocky string arrangements and excessive emoting to a minimum. They've also cranked out great holiday tunes in Having a Christmas Party and Happy Kwanzaa, and devised tasty new versions of Joy to the World and We Three Kings. The former gets a lilting funk treatment while the latter works as a jazzy, bluesy ballad. In his most surprising choice of covers, Pendergrass even reinvents John and Yoko's Happy Xmas as a romantic plaint and plea for racial harmony.

Stevie Wonder - At The Beach (1964)

Stevie at the Beach is the fifth album by Motown singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder released on the Tamla label in 1964. This album, with the exception of the mild hit Hey Harmonica Man, was a concept album of sorts, focusing on beach and surfer anthems as an attempt to get Wonder to now sing surf tunes. But much like the label's attempts to first make Wonder the teenage version of Ray Charles and then for one album as a lounge singer, it failed to connect with audiences. Stevie Wonder wouldn't have another hit until 1965 when he was finally allowed to showcase his musical talents more.

Stevie Wonder - Uptight (1966)

Stevie Wonder
began demonstrating his production skills and compositional acumen on his first of two albums in 1966. Although still just a teenager, Wonder was already anxious to do more than simply grind out love tunes. He covered Bob Dylan's Blowin' in the Wind and also contributed Pretty Little Angel alongside the monster hits Nothin's Too Good for My Baby and the title song. It was also a signal Wonder had moved beyond simply paying homage to Ray Charles and now wanted to establish his own musical identity.

Frankie Valli - Romancing The 60s

Frankie Valli has recorded only sparingly as a solo artist, and virtually never after the late '70s. But in 2007, with his recurring appearances on The Sopranos and the success of the Four Seasons-based Broadway smash + Jersey Boys, Valli's fame was higher than it had been in 30 years, and he returned with the solo album Romancing the '60s. In similar company with the standards records of Barry Manilow that topped the charts in the mid-2000s, the album presents a baker's dozen of nuggets from the pop canon (plus an extra thrown in as part of a medley). It doesn't come as a surprise that Valli's tastes run as heavily into pop as Manilow's, which results in many choices from the Brill Building stable (plus a healthy dose of Motown). Also, there's a preponderance of American choices, the only one outside the hemisphere being Brit producer Tony Hatch on "Call Me" (and that one hit the charts thanks to American Chris Montez). Although Valli had kept active during the years as a live performer, it may still be a surprise to hear how his sweet falsetto has thinned as it's aged. Valli has a large orchestra behind him on most songs, as well as backing vocals on several performances to bolster his singing. The last track, On Broadway, features the Jersey Boys themselves.

Diana Ross & The Supremes - Greatest Hits (1967)

Diana Ross & the Supremes
: Greatest Hits is a two-LP collection of singles and b-sides recorded by The Supremes, released by Motown in August 1967. The collection was the first LP to credit the group by its new name of Diana Ross & the Supremes. Although founding member Florence Ballard is pictured on all album artwork and sings on all the tracks, by the time the set was released, she had been fired from the group and replaced by Cindy Birdsong.
Greatest Hits includes fifteen Supremes singles, 10 of which went to Number One, among them were Where Did Our Love Go, Stop! In the Name of Love, You Can't Hurry Love, and the most recent Supremes number-one,The Happening (a non-album track from the 1967 film of the same name). Also included are five popular Supremes B-sides: Standing at the Crossroads of Love, Ask Any Gir, There's No Stopping Us Now, Everything is Good About You, and Whisper You Love Me Boy.

The packaging for the set includes liner notes by actress Carol Channing (which were originally written for an unreleased album "The Supremes and The Motown Sound: From Broadway To Hollywood") and paintings by Robert Taylor, including collectable 12 inch by 12 inch pin-up portraits of Diana Ross, Florence Ballard, and Mary Wilson. Greatest Hits was a number-one album on both the Billboard 200 and the Billboard R&B Albums charts in the United States, and also reached the top of the pop album chart in the United Kingdom as well. Although not nominally credited because of their increasingly estranged relationship with Motown, all of the songs included were produced by the songwriting/production team of Holland–Dozier–Holland.

Bobby Hebb - Love Games (1970)

The voice and pen that crafted the multi-format standard Sunny took four years to create as exquisite an album of adult contemporary R&B as you'll find. The place in time for Love Games is key to understanding the album's importance as a pioneering classic of original soul music. Love Games may have been Bobby Hebb's personal outpouring of grief over his divorce, but the resulting pearl from this intense period is an album masterpiece containing stunning adult contemporary R&B. With the guiding hand of producer James Fleming and gorgeous arrangements by Fleming, Richard Rome, and Dave Roberts, Bobby Hebb conceptualizes a complex album of loss and personal survival. There is one co-write from the late Sandy Baron, and that composition, Flower, is Motown flavored with jazz. Hebb said he wrote this after watching a butterfly go to the same flower day after day until a bee invaded the space, the butterfly never returned to that same flower. But outside of catching the ear of other musicians and loyal fans, Love Games was hardly as successful as all the music it would inspire. It got no promotion from the label, and the album cover would have better suited the Ray Coniff Singers. A Better Love continues exploring the theme of how some people treat love like a sport, but through it all there's a refreshingly upbeat attitude, and a textbook of material which quietly influenced the direction R&B would take through the late '70s and early '80s, music which sounds as fresh today as when it was written.
