The Jacksonville Jaguars could be without another defensive starter Sunday against Buffalo. Linebacker Justin Durant missed his second straight practice Thursday because of a concussion and has not been cleared to play. Durant says he suffered a "mild concussion" in the third quarter of last week's 24-22 win at the New York Jets.

The Jaguars figured their home game against Buffalo was money in the bank.

And that was before the Bills fired coach Dick Jauron on Tuesday and elevated Perry Fewell, a former Jaguars assistant coach, to the job.

That may give the Jaguars even more of an edge because a coach leaving in a non-bye week can be a disaster.

San Francisco did it to Mike Nolan last October and the 49ers lost that week to Seattle, 34-13. Bobby Petrino walked out on Atlanta in December 2007 and the Falcons lost to the Bucs, 37-3.

The Jaguars go into this one an 8 1/2 point favorite. But when the Jaguars are big favorites, they're not always reliable. They're 6-12 against the spread when favored by 6.5 points or more under coach Jack Del Rio.

Just two weeks ago, they failed to...

The Jacksonville Jaguars insist they have several options to replace injured cornerback Rashean Mathis. Safety Reggie Nelson might be the top choice, even after his performance at Tennessee earlier this month. Nelson, starting at cornerback for the first time in his career, missed several tackles and got beat for a touchdown in a 30-13 loss to the Titans.

Former Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Jimmy Smith will serve 18 months of probation after pleading guilty to drug possession charges. The former star said Wednesday after the hearing it was the next step in getting his life back together. The charge stemmed from an April traffic stop in which Smith was found driving without a license and carrying cocaine and marijuana.

Jack Del Rio says the "book" that tells NFL coaches what to do in certain situations is outdated. He believes it has been for a while, too. That's why the Jacksonville Jaguars coach told running back Maurice Jones-Drew to take a knee at the 1-yard line in the final minutes during Sunday's 24-22 win at the New York Jets.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are hoping their next game without cornerback Rashean Mathis goes better than their previous one. Coach Jack Del Rio says Mathis likely won't play Sunday against the Buffalo Bills after injuring his groin in a 24-22 victory at the New York Jets. Mathis sat out Jacksonville's game at Tennessee earlier this month because of a broken index finger on his left hand.

New York Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards(notes) (17) watches the ball fall after Jacksonville Jaguars safety Sean Considine(notes) (37) knocked it away on a 2-point-conversion attempt during the fourth quarter of an NFL football game Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, in East Rutherford, N.J. The Jaguars won 24-22.

Maurice Jones-Drew saw a clear path to the end zone and somehow fought the urge to walk across the goal line. The Jacksonville running back stopped at the 1 and took a knee, keeping the clock ticking and setting up Josh Scobee's 21-yard field goal that gave the Jaguars a 24-22 victory over the New York Jets as time expired Sunday.
