Searched the forums but couldn't find an answer to my question so here it goes:
Is it possible to set up VNC so that you can take over the server when it's at the login screen (like after a restart)?
Currently, VNC only works when I'm logged in, which means I have to connect a keyboard after every restart. Bit of a pain when you're trying to run the thing headless.
On a related note, does there exist a utility for Ubuntu like Teleport for Mac OS X where you take over another computer but on that computers screen? In other words: you move your cursor and keyboard input to the other computer but do not copy over the screen output.
Thanks for any help.

Just looking for a quick way to color the Grub2 menu. We used to be able to set colors in Menu.lst, or using startup manager, but not sure if or how to do it in Grub2. Anyone done this???

Hey all,
So when I choose the New Wave theme, my system freezes. Completely & repeatedly.
So I put a bug into gnome.support.(First one over there, put a couple in Launchpad for other things).
They (Gnome) can't reproduce it (not surprising, I'm guessing it's specific to my system).
They ask me to do a stack trace and suggest following the instructions at:
http://live.gnome.org/GettingTraces
But there, and the link for Distro specific, might as well be in Klingon as far as I'm concerned.
It's like someone to whom this stuff is second-nature assumes I know what they are talking about. they don't realise the level of my ignorance!
Let me give you an example:
"You need to install debug packages for the program that crashed."
I was choosing a theme. What program is that? Also, how would I ( or any average user) know what dependencies are required?
Or:
"The lib packages often have a -dbg variant (ie: libglib2.0-0-dbg), you just need to install them as gdb/bug-buddy will automatically pick up the debugging information the next time it runs."
Hey, I checked Synaptic and there is some kind of gtk debugging tool already installed. That's as much as I can tell you.
I have no idea what to do next.
Any clues?
I'm happy to submit bugs and collect any info if it helps the overall distro, as it's the only way I can help the community but I'm a bit lost here.
Karmic, by the way.

Hello,
I am trying to reinstall Ubuntu 8.10 after having various difficulties with 9.04 and 9.10.
To do this, I simply booted into the 8.10 CD and installed over my 9.10 partition. However, after doing this, my system is not quite back to normal (notably, sound doesn't work, which was my main issue with 9.10).
One thing I am suspicious about is the grub boot menu has about 12 entries such as
But I think the 2.6.31-14 kernel is something that came with 9.10. Is it possible 9.10 "residue" remains on the system and if so how can I ensure it is removed?
I believe my /boot directory is on the same partition as /. The only directory I have in a separate partition is /home.
What is the recommended process for completely reinstalling the system in a case like this? (I would like to preserve the data in /home, though)

I'm trying to play the original xcom on dosbox but it's buggy.
1. The screen is flattened a bit.
2. Their are random blips and bleeps that aren't supposed to be there.
3. Sound affects are nearly a second late.
4. Sometimes the cursor or units leave a graphic trail of themselves.
Is it a problem with linux, the settings, or maybe dosbox?

I am running Ubuntu 8.4 on a Fujitsu lifebook laptop
I am unable to get it to transmit (from VGA) to a projector (or a terminal for that matter)
Note it works in windows. ie if I press appropriate hotkey Fn+w
(w is the function key with a monitor icon) it turns the external display on and off.
I tried installing hotkeys. It makes the function keys for dimming and brightening work but not the external VGA.
I tried all possible settings in BIOS + the physical switch next to the VGA port -- No luck.
I understand that the low level infrastructure for this kind of stuff has changed in recent ubuntus. But I dont want to go through an upgrade cycle (right now) if I can help it (and after that will it work?)

Whenever I install a new app, it registers the mimetypes it handles. Unfortunately it always gets put at the top of the list as the preferred app.
Example 1:
I have DragonPlayer as my default player for videos. I install HandBrake. Now, all video files open by default in Handbrake.
Example 2:
I install or upgrade Wine. Now double-clicking a Python source file tries to launch Wine instead of Kate.
Example 3:
All my MP3 files open in some ID3 editor
Example 4:
All audio files of any kind open in RealPlayer which is just silly.
I know how to change this, of course, but it's tedious because you have to do it for every single filetype. Isn't there some way to 'pin' the preferred app for filetypes/groups and keep this from happening?

Hi,
my setup:
Server (U9.10) with OpenVPN (bridged) - works like a charm
Client (U9.10) with OpenVPN, trying to connect to the server:
1st try via console: "openvpn client.conf" -> works, all routes are set automatically, but DNS Server must be added manually to resolv.conf (although I push it from the server). After that the VPN works perfectly, external Internet connection continues to work.
2nd try via Network Manager: exact same configuration, just via the GUI: VPN connection is established, client gets an IP, some routes are added, DNS Server is added to resolv.conf automatically. Result: internet is working, but not the connection to VPN LAN. DNS is slow because the first DNS Server is from the VPN lan, but can not be reached. it's frustrating. After some time (1-5 minutes) the VPN connection fails.
What I found out is that the routes which are set in the two cases are different:
First one, from console open, working:
Second One, from Network Manager, not working:
So next I manually adjusted the routes. Without any success. Although the routes are idential now, the connection is still broken.
I also checked /var/log/daemon.log, where Network Manager writes to. The only think I found was:
However, during the Network Manager VPN connection is up, the tap0 interface exists, so this must result from something else.
Finally I really have the impression, that there is a bug somewhere here.
Does anybody else have made similar positive or negative experiences?
Thanks,
Matthias

I am very new to this, so my question might be way off here.
I installed Bind on my system and set it up according to a guide I followed.
It works great in one way, if I ping my domain (let's call it example.com) I get a response, and if I do a dnslookup on example.com, I get the IP of my machine.
The other way around does not work however. If I do a lookup on the IP, it gives me my ISPs host, not example.com
Is there any way I can fix this?

Hi all,
First, full disclosure, I'm a linux newbie, but I'm very open to following instructions and learning more and, you know, trying stuff. So far I'm loving using Ubuntu - my laptop runs cooler, faster and is generally more awesome. Similarly, Cinelerra, while it has a bit of a learning curve, is a fantastic piece of software that I'm thoroughly enjoying. I installed it per the instructions on the Cinelerra CV website and the install went smoothly.
That said, I have a really weird issue. I love that I can pan horizontally and vertically using the histograms on the timeline (Cameras X and Y), but the blue histogram - Camera Z - doesn't show up for me whether it's checked under the view menu or not. (Neither does Projector Z).
I can still zoom by shift-dragging in the compositor, but this is nowhere near as intuitive and easy as the histogram method since the level of zoom doesn't reset at the start of each clip.
Once, for no reason I can possibly name, Camera Z did show up, and there was much rejoicing, but the next time I opened up the program it was back to its invisible state and nothing I try seems to make it show up and I can't think for the life of me what I did to make it show up that once. I don't think I did anything out of the ordinary.
I've had a look around and can't find anyone else reporting this issue, which makes me wonder if I'm missing something extremely obvious?
Any help would be appreciated.
I'm running Karmic Koala (not the netbook remix, even though I have a laptop) and it's 64 bit.

Hi.
I installed kubuntu 9.10 a few weeks ago and the other day I compiled the alsa drivers hoping to get the microphonr yo work.
I compiled the alsa-drivers, alsa-lib and alsa-utils no problem and the sound worked fine until I reeboted, when I got this message saying that the soundcard had been removed.
Can anyone help?
I'm running an HP dv6 with an Intel HDA STAC92.

I don't use Ubuntu, but you guys seem to universally know what a software channel is, but do not actually tell any of the people who asked this question before me that I have seen. Instead, you just tell them to "do the following things" in order to make such-and-such a thing work and/or go away. So, can somebody please explain to me what a software channel is? The only possibility I can postulate from the non-explanation "explanations" that are rampantly posted at various websites (I am not talking about this particular website nor including it in that statement) is that it is like iTunes or Download Manager?

I found the following code to return one's idle time by querying activity on the X server:
It compiles. It runs. It seg faults when run from a tty or in a cron job. Presumably, it does so because querying an X server from outside of it is always awkward. Does anyone know how to fix this? Or some other more reliable method?
Code:
#include <X11/extensions/scrnsaver.h>
#include <stdio.h>
main() {
XScreenSaverInfo *info = XScreenSaverAllocInfo();
Display *display = XOpenDisplay(NULL);
if (display != NULL)

Totem plays DVDs for a while and then stops working, gets jumpy, becomes incomprehensible, etc. I don't know how to debug this and I'm kind of exhausted after all the other problem-fixing I've done on this version. I'm considering downgrading to an older distro, but have already invested a lot of time in this install.
Does Ubuntu not support legacy hardware anymore? My system is on the older side. Here's lshw for my DVD player:

I can't ear anything from my speakers (or plugged in headphone jacks).
I have an Asus P5Q-E motherboard with ADI AD2000B on-board sound.
I'm using Kubuntu 9.04. KDE's multimedia settings says its using the HDA Intel (AD198X Analog) driver.
Sometimes, it works. Sometimes, I get a message that pops up when I log in and says it is unavailable and falling back to default.
What's going on? Any idea how to troubleshoot?
PS: And what do ya know, rebooting the computer fixes the problem. Huh? What is this, windows? Not sure if I should mark the thread as solved.
I have an Asus P5Q-E motherboard with ADI AD2000B on-board sound.
I'm using Kubuntu 9.04. KDE's multimedia settings says its using the HDA Intel (AD198X Analog) driver.

I went to the site and read how to install xbmc. I did what they suggested everything went ok but there is a problem. The problem is that xbmc doesn't start up even though it is perfectly installed. I see that it is under sounds and videos. I press it to start up but nothing? Does anybody have any idea why?
Thank you
