Ulteo attented the Open World Forum (OWF) taking place last week in Paris, gathering more than 1500 persons from about 30 countries, interested by the open source eco system and ways to make it grow.
Part of this exciting event was the Open Innovation Awards, an international competition of open source start-ups. Ulteo was fortunate enough to be selected as one of the 20 nominees. This pre-selection allowed us to pitch a panel of 15 international open source experts (Venture Capitalists, open source projects CEO like Mark Shuttleworth, public organizations, integrators, bloggers, etc.) And on Friday Oct. 2nd at the end of the OWF, the jury announced the 5 winners, including Ulteo. Thanks to experimentations by Prabhu Ramamoorthy and the nice work of Phil Lavigna, everyone can now use Ulteo OVD in the clouds with Amazon EC2. Just watch the two video tutorials at http://www.ulteoadmin.com/! Note: the EC2 Ulteo OVD image will run only on EC2 USA. If you plan to use it on EC2 EU, you have to register the image in EC2 EU. In that case, please let us know so we can post the news here.

We hope you had an awesome summer and have some goals set for the fall! After all, goals help to keep us on track. Speaking of goals, Ulteo Open Virtual Desktop (OVD) v1.0 has been going global. Thank you all for your support!
We’ve been busy developing the Ulteo OVD beta for our 2.0 release that you can try very soon as a beta tester.
The key feature in this release is the ability to deliver applications either on a full desktop in the web-browser, or start each application in a dedicated browser window. We want to do this by allowing you to click on a link for a web page or a document in a centralized folder. This is very common in corporate portal/intranet today.
And in case you’re wondering, we still support both Linux and Windows applications.
We are now looking for enterprise users who can beta test our product and provide feedback. We want to build this product around your needs. Our goal is to have a stable production version by the end of the year. (more…)
“UlteoAdmin” is a new and nice community website started by Phil Lavigna that presents information and tutorial on how to use Ulteo in several videos. Worth a look at! Gaël.
We have released OVD 1.0.1, that is a security update (sanitization to fix XSS vulnerability), and added a “Translations” paragraph to the download page so users can download the up to date XML source of all our documentations, translate it and contribute it back.
Following many requests from our customers who wanted to test the OVD as a VM on an hypervisor, we have release a very easy to install version of the Open Virtual Desktop as an ISO file that can be used to burn a DVD media. Just boot that DVD and you can either install a Session Manager, one or more Application Server(s), or even both on the same machine! No need to worry about anymore with the host OS, that DVD image will install everything, including the host OS. At the moment, we provide OVD 1.0RC2 so it’s very close to the final version and has support for Windows applications delivery. Download the ISO and the documentation from the OVD download page.
Since we launched our beta of the Ulteo Open Virtual Desktop just 5 months ago we have been very busy working on many fronts:
- We are going to release our version 1 very soon that will include Windows applications support and we have already a solid plan for more interesting features for the upcoming beta release in a few months.
- We have passed the 6000 downloads mark from more than 100 countries, and we have also passed the thousand blog & media articles coverage about our solutions.
- We are engaged with multiple projects and divers potential partners in different countries considering to use our solution in many different types of projects. More announcements soon.
So thank you all for your interest and for your support.
With your help we are building together a unique offering with the Ulteo Open Virtual Desktop (OVD). Our open source virtual desktop and application delivery solution is an ideal flexible solution to reduce cost of the end users environment in any organization and to simplify the hard work of the technical teams behind the scene. And that’s badly needed in these difficult times…
Stay tuned and don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, suggestions or comments.
Thierry Koehrlen
We hope that you are all doing ok in these difficult times. Maybe Ulteo can help you in some ways to achieve your professional goals.
On our side we have been busy developing the Ulteo Open Virtual desktop beta for Windows applications or a mix Windows and Linux applications in the same desktop or from a web page. We are now looking for just 50 private beta users who commit to try and test it and send us feedback between Feb. 26 and March 7. 2009.
Please book your slot asap because we have 100 more potential candidates than available slot BUT only reply if you can commit to really try it during this period so you don’t take the spot of someone else.
If you are interested, just email me (tk AT ulteo DOT com) and write in the title: “count me in” and in the text message please say that “you commit to be a beta tester” and provide your name, country, organization size.
Update: In only a couple of hours, we have reached and exceeded the beta testers candidates numbers. Thank you all for your help and interest.

For those who are interested in using Red Hat servers to install the Open Virtual Desktop, we have improved and updated the corresponding documentation:
http://www.ulteo.com/home/main/images/uovd/doc/pdf/Documentation_RedHat.pdf
By the way, several users have reported that they have troubles with Application Servers that refuse to register on the admin console. Most of the time, it’s because the reverse DNS name is not well configured, so they get “blacklisted” when the Session Server checks reverse names from Application Server’s IP.
When it happens for Application Servers, three fixes are possible:
- either you disable the reverse DNS check in the admin console
- or add an exception for each application server in the admin console
- or set the DNS server with correct reverse names (recommended)
When it happens for the Session Manager, the only way to fix it for now is to set correct reverse DNS server entries.
We are going to improve the documentation about this issue and add increase verbosity in the admin console.
Greets,
Gaël.

Today we unveil “Ulteo Virtual Desktop”, a “virtualized” version of Ulteo that can be installed and run under Windows (XP or Vista 32 bit). But as it’s not using any virtualization environment to run (Linux system calls are converted into Windows system calls by coLinux), the performance is close to a native system that would be installed on the PC hardware. The Virtual Desktop offers many applications by default, including Firefox, OpenOffice, Thunderbird and many others. Even games are available! Read more about the features and download now!
