Well not exactly. The server itself kept chugging along without too many problems. But I did come pretty close to hitting someone across the head with a cluestick yesterday. Around lunchtime Zabbix tells me something’s up, so I go and check the monitoring server and lo and behold:

Log in to the machine, run ps ax | grep apache2 | wc -l which returns 34. -1 for the Apache parent process, -1 for the grep command that gets counted and you end up with 32. Hah! That’s exactly the MaxClients value set in the Apache config, so it looks like something’s hogging all the available Apache resources. The error log for the virtualhost also seemed to confirm this:

[Fri Nov 05 12:47:30 2010] [error] [client 12.34.56.78] PHP Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 90 seconds exceeded in site_settings.module on line 526

Not once, not twice, but about 20 or so times in short succession. So I open the file to figure out what all the fuss is about and I find this awesome little code snippet. Supposedly a function written to get a summary of $count characters truncated to the nearest space from $string.

function _word_trim($string, $count) {
  if (strlen($string) > $count) {
    while (substr(substr($string, 0, $count), -1) != " ") {
      $count++;
    }
    return substr($string, 0, $count) . ' …';
  }
  else {
    return $string;
  }
}

I fully understand people make mistakes. But with some simple unit testing this could have been easily prevented. Just feed this function a block of text that gets truncated somewhere in the last word and ka-pow, infinite loop. The result? Each Apache process that serves the page containing this error gets stuck until it hits php.ini’s max_execution_time value (90 seconds in this case). If the requests keep coming in too fast, you start to tie up every available Apache process and effectively bog down the web server or, as a friend put it, Congratulations, you’ve just DoS’d your own site.

There’s people who will never get it and then there’s Steve Lieber. No threats about bitchslapping people with takedown notices or sending out the legal hounds. Instead, when he discovered someone posted a scanned copy of his comic Underground on 4chan he just went ahead and joined the discussion, fielding questions and sharing his thoughts about the situation.

I got into most of my favorite bands after hearing them on 3rd generation cassette mix-tapes or my crappy alarm clock radio and getting curious enough about them to go pick up a CD or see them live. It feels like a safe bet that things will eventually work the same way with the stuff that I do. Like I said on twitter yesterday, I’m willing to trust that Jeff’s and my readers will compensate us for the work.

The result of all of this? A traffic spike to his site that’s pretty much off the charts and which can’t even compare to the couple of extra hits he got from the recent review on BoingBoing. Plus, more importantly, record comic sales. Awesome. Well played, well played indeed! I tip my hat to you sir!

delicous.com Wordle cloud for CraHan

A Wordle word cloud using data from my delicious.com account. Not very useful (it is a tag cloud after all). But the idea is kinda cool and there’s quite a bit of options to fiddle around with. Just saying, if you’re looking for some new procrastination material.

Back then

A photo shot on my 7th or 8th birthday at a farm near my grandmother’s vacation house. It’s kind of funny how you only remember little fragments of it all: the huge corn fields, sheep, cows, that perfect climbing tree in the orchard, the little shed with the two toy tractors and sharp-garden-utensils-that-should-never-ever-be-touched, my parents’ blue Citroën, the old fireplace, those big metal milk cans, the black border running along the base of the house, the well, plastic tablecloths, the mezzanine halfway up the stairs, dirty knees, the outhouse, how it never seemed to rain, daring each other to touch the wiring on the electrified cow fence, the big gooseberry bush, the wasp nests, the black out-of-tune piano and standing, exhausted, in a bucket filled with cold soapy water as we washed away all the dirt before driving back home at the end of the day.

All that, from a single picture. Never fails to amaze me.

At first the plan was to just use whatever the default theme for this WordPress version (3.0.1) was but since I had an old license of Thesis lying around I figured I might as well put it to good use. I could honestly care less about the whole SEO stuff they keep yammering about, but I do like the simple look & feel as well as the customization options the theme offers.  Five years ago I would’ve probably dived into the code and messed around but these days I have better things to do.  So yeah, lots of options to fiddle around with. Works for me.

The next thing to figure out is if I should import all the old entries from v1.n00.be here or not.  A clean start is fun.  Legacy entries, missing images and a ton of ill-chosen category names somehow don’t seem all that appealing to me at this point.  On the other hand not all that much work has been put into setting this up.  So if anything borks beyond repair not all that much effort’s been lost.

Update: all the old posts have been imported and the categories have been heavily pruned.

Update 2: found a decent syntax highlighting plugin.

class myfirstjavaprog
{
        public static void main(String args[])
        {
           System.out.println("Hello World!");
        }
}

So, uhm, yes… the old blog’s still available over at v1.n00.be.  This site will be up as soon as I can get myself motivated enough.  Well, I guess you could say that it’s up already and I’m just being lazy (you’d be right), but I’ll see about adding more content in the days to come (don’t hold your breath though).  The layout will change, things will most likely break and your dog might spontaneously combust.  All things for which I will take no responsibility whatsoever!

Ok, now where did I leave that Fallout 3 xbox360 game? A-ha, found it! Crap, Bioshock disc inside. Ok, locate the Bioshock box, open it… damnit, Bayonetta! Look for the Bayonetta box, open it, find Gears of War 2…

It took me 7 tries to finally find Fallout 3 squashed under 2 Halo 3 discs in the Halo ODST box. One day I’ll really have to get this mess sorted.

This is nothing short of amazing. Make sure you watch it full screen! Took me quite some time before I realized that it was all CGI. Check the second clip for some examples on how they did the compositing.

The last couple days I’ve rediscovered something that, back around the end of the 80s and almost all throughout the 90s, ate up quite a huge chunk of my free time: the Amiga. I think we got our first Amiga 500 somewhere around 1988. Later on, in the beginning of the 90s we bought an A600, which immediately marked the end of me and my sister fighting over who could hog the machine for the next couple of hours.

So, 1988 give or take and our Commodore 64 with its old cassette system instantly got shoved into a corner to start gathering dust. Hi and welcome to floppy disk land, we bring you double density, 880K goodness (eat that 720K IBM PC floppies)! 512K RAM which was later extended with another 512K of slow RAM through the trapdoor at the bottom of the device. A 32-bit Motorola 68000 CPU running at 7MHz, 16-bit data bus and 4 channel 8-bit audio. The A600 came with 1MB of RAM out of the box and, except for being a lot smaller, was technically pretty much identical to the original 500.

I still feel bad (and sad) about giving both systems away when I moved. Out of all the computers I’ve used in my life the Amiga ranks up there at the top of the list (even beating Apple, yes). Maybe it’s just nostalgia speaking, I don’t know, but it was and in my opinion still is an amazing system. So the past two days I finally took the time to mess around with E-UAE and the Amiga Forever Plus edition. E-UAE definitely isn’t as elegant, full featured and stable as its Windows counterpart (WinUAE), but it gets the job done. I’ve currently got 4 systems set up:

  • Amiga 500 with 2MB RAM booting Workbench 1.3
  • Amiga 600 with 4MB RAM for games (not auto booting)
  • Amiga 1200 with 8MB RAM booting Workbench 3.1
  • Amiga Forever with 64MB RAM booting AmigaOS 3.9

The last one’s a custom machine set up to boot Workbench 3.9 from a hard disk image instead of floppies and comes with a TCP/IP stack and a set of networking tools ready to go. Not exactly the A500 I used to own, but it’s fun to see what became of the platform after I was stupid enough to get rid of my hardware. Really makes me want to whip out the VISA card and order myself a nice little 1200 with 100Gig HD, AGA scandoubler, network card and AmigaOS 3.9. Instead I’ll just save myself some cash and mess around with the emulator for now. I really don’t want to go and throw away my sole new year’s resolution of cutting down on impulse buying two days into 2010.

Anyway, I’ve been stuck here the last two days playing Speedball 2, Cannon Fodder (anyone remember sucky sucky and supah doopah missile boostah?), Dune 2, Syndicate, Rick Dangerous, Hired Guns, Desert Strike and Alien Breed, which has actually been rereleased for Xbox360 by Team17 (more on that in a later post). I also need to mess around with ARexx again and check out some old demos and see if I can find a copy of the Ultimate Soundtracker, oh and I do hope there’s going to be a good old fashioned Guru Meditation error in there somewhere! Oh yeah, the memories are definitely starting to come back :)

24 October 2009. That’s two full frickin’ months since the last post (and that one wasn’t exactly worthy of the name ‘blog post’ either). Sigh, it used to be multiple posts a day on here once, so what the hell happened?

Having multiple blogs, a Facebook, Flickr & Twitter account isn’t easy. Especially the multiple blogs part. I love writing, but it doesn’t come all that fluently for me. So keeping myself motivated to maintain more than one blog has become a pretty big burden. And ultimately the solution is easy, just ditch all but one. Done deal. Yay! Easy! Let’s get on with it!

During 2009 I kinda got sidetracked with photography and even started blogging. Ultimately I got bored with that though. It happens with a lot of the stuff I do really. New and shiny things tend to grab my attention and make me lose interest in all the other stuff. But now that photography isn’t taking up the majority of my free time anymore and with 2010 around the bend I decided to kick things into gear again around here. You know, New Year’s resolutions and all :)

So what’s the plan? I don’t want to simply start posting again. The site’s in need of a bit of an overhaul and I’ve been meaning to play around with Winston (a UI Library with a lot of potential) for quite some time now. So, a redesign then? Yes, very much so. Besides, I’ve never been very good with graphics heavy design work. A minimal design based on the Winston defaults sounds like a good idea. Even if it’s only to make sure I don’t give up on the project halfway through.

So except for the temporary case of online apathy, is there anything else worthwhile happening in my life? Let’s see. Noah’s growing up damn fast. He’s almost two years old now. God knows where that time went, flew right by. Joke’s as awesome as ever (but still hasn’t started blogging). As for me, I’m still collecting Shirow artwork, still addicted to gadgets and I’m still the same procrastinator as always. Same old same old to be honest, which I don’t mind too much.

Well, I guess this is as good a time as any to get cracking. Let’s start with updating WordPress and just take it from there…

I’ve been receiving some emails from people about how the SkyMonitor widget has stopped working the past couple of weeks. Unfortunately I didn’t have the time to look into it in depth and figure out what was causing the issue. Luckily for me though, Steven emailed me a fix which is working fine. So head over to the widget section and download the latest 1.2.3 version.

Woohoo, I was kind of hesitant to go ahead with this procedure, but in the end it all went smoothly. I upgraded the standard 512MB to 1GB (by adding another 512MB RAM module). It’s a little more work than simply opening up a little trap door on the bottom of the machine, but it worked. I used this video to help guide me:

As a sidenote, looks like the Aspire One noisy fan post is getting a lot of attention. I guess I’ll have to start specializing in Aspire One tech now :)

So I’m still taking that photography course (2nd year now). Most of the topics are the same as last year. Product photography with a view camera is new though and it kicks major ass (if I do say so myself). Two sessions of 45 minutes each with 2 photos as a result. It’s a very relaxing type of photography. Very ‘zen’ if you will.

Yeah, I know, I know. Things have been pretty quiet around here and I could think of a lot of excuses as to why that is, but I won’t bother you with any of them. Suffice to say that things have been pretty busy and time has been lacking to keep posting on here on a regular basis.

I’ve recently (well, a couple of months ago really) started a Dutch blog about photography and I’ve been thinking of merging n00.be with it. Merging in the sense that I’d be posting my entries both in Dutch and in English over at blog.thomasbouve.com. The upside would obviously be more frequent updates. The downside of this is that I’d be focussing heavily on photography (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing).

Other than that things have been quite peachy. Noah has just turned 8 (months that is :P) a couple of days ago and he now has 2 teeth with a third on the way. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that he’s constantly happy and smiling. Aren’t babies supposed to cry from time to time? I guess Noah missed that memo. You also got to love the fact he sleeps 12 hours straight from 7pm to 7am. Ok, getting up at 7am doesn’t exactly qualify as ‘sleeping in’, but it does beat getting out of bed in the middle of the night :)

So yeah, chances are that n00.be will start redirecting to blog.thomasbouve.com soon (depending in how much time I can spend trying to figure out the multi language stuff). In the meantime I’ll try to keep you all up to date on the situation!

While playing with the Google 2001 website (apparently I had problems with Cygwin back in 2000) I checked out archive.org again. Before n00.be, which dates back to somewhere around June 2002, I had a site hosted at crahan.djcricket.com.

So ok, they didn’t archive any of the images and I was using tables for the layout, but I still think it was a pretty clean design. All the content areas had rounded corners and stuff. 2001, that’s a pretty long time ago in internet years. Bleh, I feel old now :/

(Oh and for the Litesteppers out there, the links in the sidebar went to floach.pimpin.net, www.ls2k.org and nexter.ls2k.org)
