The era of speech recognition is here, as you can see more and more devices built with support for this technology. App developers are producing amazing apps to easy input, and they are always pushing the boundaries to enable better user experience – limits that go further than just turning speech to text.

Speech to editable text

Speech recognition helps you get results by asking questions or giving instructions to your devices without having to type. Since your devices can now ‘listen’ to you, why not have it record your speech and convert it into text? In this article, you will get to achieve that with the help of TalkTyper, a simple web app that does just that, so you can easily copy your speech in text format and save it elsewhere.

Turn Speech Into Editable Text

Expecting to download or login? Forget it all, simply go to TalkTyper homepage and click on the ‘Mic’ button.

Mic

When the ‘Speak now’ indicator pops up, say your speech.

Speak

When you’re done with your speech, TalkTyper will automatically turn your speech into text, in red. If there’s any error, you can quickly edit the text in the box.

Text

Now if you want to copy the whole speech, you can simply highlight and copy, alternatively, click on the arrow in the green box to transfer the text so you can do more to it.

Transfer text

When the text is transferred, you will see it in the second box below, and the top box would have been cleared.

Transfered

Notice to the right of the text area that there’s an option panel and with this panel, you can easily copy the text to clipboard, print, delete, forward via email, tweet or translate easily with a click on a button.

Conclusion

This web app is simple yet it does provide you a great help if you are prefer dictating your notes instead of typing it out by hand. It also serves as a great brainstorming tool so that you don’t find your trail of thoughts disrupted just because you need to stop and build sentences. Working on the computer with no restrictions to the Internet may give you freedom, and keep you away from stress whenever you need to free your mind, but at times, this could also distract you from work. You may not even notice that you are distracted – until you notice lower levels of productivity. I guess, some self-control is required at this point.

SelfRestrain Blocked Website

You can control your own access to the Internet on your own, for instance, by setting a prohibited time: a time when you cannot surf any particular website unrelated to work. This will take a lot of discipline and at times you might need some external help. We suggest SelfRestrain.

SelfRestrain is a simple app that will block access to certain websites within a preset time. In this tutorial, you will learn how to activate the restrictions on Windows 7.

Download SelfRestrain

Go to SelfRestrain and proceed to download the app for your Windows.

SelfRestrain Download

Starting SelfRestrain

When the download is done, open the application and set the length of time you want to restrict your access to the Web, then click on the ‘Edit Blocklist’ button to set which websites you want to block access to within the period.

SelfRestrain Blockllist

You will see a small window where you can list down websites you want to limit your access to. You can insert multiple website addresses, but do insert only one website address per line. Click ‘Done’ when you have completed this. In this example, we entered ‘facebook.com’.

SelfRestrain The Blocklist

Click on the ‘Start’ button to start SelfRestrain.

SelfRestrain Start

Now try opening the restricted website as listed on your Blocklist. You will find that you are not able to reach the site. You will also see a small window on the top of the browser with a timer, stating the remaining time you have to wait before you can access the website again.

SelfRestrain Blocked Website

Thinking of switching browsers to escape? Not to worry, SelfRestrain works on all browsers.

Conclusion

With SelfRestrain, you will be able to keep up your productivity levels without being controlled by your employer. It is certainly a great app if you are working from home, or anywhere on your own. The app is currently available for Windows and Linux, while Mac users will have to wait for a bit to get their hands on it.

Google Docs works great with Gmail but it does not offer options to manage your files from your own desktop. Opening a browser and logging in to Google Docs to manage your files isn’t much of a hassle, but being able to manage those online files from your desktop would be more comfortable and easier.

gExplore

Thankfully, now we have gExplore, a desktop application that not only allows you to manage your Google Docs files, but also upload, download, organize files and labels, encrypt files and more with Google Docs from your desktop.

Download and Install gExplore

To get a copy of your gExplore, go to gExplore download page and download the application, then install gExplore on your computer.

Install gExplore

Using gExplore

When first opening gExplore, you are required to log into your Google account, simply provide your username and password in the provided fields and click ‘OK’.

The main window of gExplore is pretty simple with 2 main columns, they are the folder navigation called ‘Collection’ on the left and the file explorer on the right. At the bottom of the window, you have options to upload and download files, to and from Google Docs via gExplore. You can also perform uploads and downloads with drag and drop.

Decrypt Download File

When you have encrypted a file, it will be inaccessible on the web and will remain encrypted. There’s no way to decrypt the online version unless you download, decrypt and reupload it to replace the encrypted version. There are two ways to decrypt your file.

  1. Upon downloading an encrypted file, you will be prompted to decrypt the file, or leave it as it is. Click ‘Yes’ or otherwise you will not be able to open the file.

    decrypt download

  2. If you happen to download an encrypted file without decrypting it, no worries, you can still decrypt the file. Look at the menu button ‘Tools’ and then click on ‘Decrypt File’.

    Decrypt

A new window will open, now select the file you want to decrypt, enter the password and click ‘Ok’.

Changing Collection Folder

Changing the collection folder is easy, you can simply drag and drop any files to a new collection folder, or simply right click on the file and select ‘Parent Collections’.

Parent Collections

If you have created more than one of the new collection folders, select the new folder you want to transfer the file to, and click ‘Ok’.

Since the announcement of Facebook Timeline, we have seen many users showcase their creative touch on the feature. With a few more steps, you can even print your creative Facebook Timeline on your business card for use outside the virtual world.

Facebook Business Card

Moo Card, a business-card maker recently partnered with Facebook to offer customers a free first print of their business cards, based on their Facebook Cover picture with a bit of information from their profile.

This tutorial will guide you through the process of getting your Facebook Timeline into your, probably most interesting, Business Card. Lets get started.

Authorize permission

At your convenience, go straight to Moo Card’s Facebook Cards page and authorize your permission to get things rolling, or do it right from your Facebook profile.

authorize

a. Authorize from Facebook Profile

  1. To authorize from your Facebook Profile, firstly, log in your Facebook account, then go straight to your Timeline profile page.

  2. Click on the ‘About’ section just below your Profile Picture as shown.

    Fabook Timeline

  3. In your ‘About’ page, look for the column ‘Contact Info’ and hover your cursor over that tiny Business Card icon.

  4. You will see a pop-up window with a preview of your Facebook Timeline Business Card. Click on the link that says ‘Print cards’.

    print

B. Authorize from Moo Card’s Facebook Cards Page

Should you decide to start the process from Moo Card’s Facebook Cards page, simply click on the big button on the left that says ‘Start Making’, and you will be redirected to the same authorization page.

Moo Cards

Customize your card

When you authorize access to Moo Cards, they will call all your previous Timeline Covers into its web application page, and this is where you get to customize the look of your card. Take a pick from any Cover Photos you have used previously.

customize

You will notice a small button just below the card that says ‘Flip this card over’. Click on this button to edit the back of your Facebook Business Card with a favorite quote, or make changes to your contact details.

Proceed to Checkout

When you have finalized the design of your future Facebook Business Card, you can then proceed to checkout, but just before that, you will be prompted with a checklist. Read them and tick on all three, then click on ‘Next Step’, and you will then be directed to the checkout page.

Checklist

1. Select Package

En route to the checkout page, you will be asked to select your package. The standard package for 50 pcs is free. The Facebook Business Card will be delivered to you for a shipping fee depending on your country, and the delivery is trackable too.

checkout

2. Confirm Order

Once a package is selected, you need to confirm your order to proceed to the payment page. Before clicking the checkout button, you can still review your card, should you decide to make any last minute changes.

checkout

3. Payment

At checkout, you will be directed to the payment page, and since this is still a promotional product, there will be no payment involved.

payment

Now you will be redirected to a page where you need to submit your particulars together with the delivery address. When you have submitted the completed form, you will receive a confirmation email in your Inbox, stating that your order has been received.

Wait for your delivery

Congratulations, you have now completed your order. In the comfirmation email, you are provided with an order number with the link to track your delivery. Pretty neat, considering you are getting 50 pieces of your first Facebook Timeline Business Cards, for free (apart from the shipping fee).

Facebook Business Card

Conclusion

And there you have it, your own Facebook Timeline themed business card. There aren’t many offers out there where you can test out a full service for free. In this case, you get the added security of being able to track your order too so why not give it a shot?

We compile some reviews from Android Market so you can have a clearer picture of what Hub is capable or not capable of:

  • If a SMS exceeds140 characters it doesn’t automatically send your message in two texts.
  • This app is simple to easy-to-use. It looks really nice too.

  • Hub does not work on HTC rezound

Apparently Hub is still a beta program developed by Yahoo!. If you’re facing problem using Hub, you can send your feedback or report via the “Report a Problem” link in the about section of the app settings.
