For the third straight weekend, the Memorial baseball team won four games in a tournament, making it another successful one.

SULPHUR–After losing to Iowa on Thursday in their first game of the Sulphur Golden Tornado Baseball kickoff tournament, the Tors seemed to be back on track with 10-0 win over Port Neches-Groves in their first game of the tournament on Saturday. But errors and a lack of hits with runners on base came back to haunt them as they lost 6-1 to PNG and 10-5 Iowa to close out the tournament.

SULPHUR–Errors coupled with struggles at the plate against Iowa’s Madison Lachney led to the Sulphur Tors first loss of the season 3-1 to the Yellow Jackets on the first day of the Sulphur Golden Tornado Baseball Kickoff tournament.

Local baseball teams will get it in high gear this week with plenty of tournament action.

BRIDGE CITY -- Freshman Felicia Sauceda propeled Nederland's girls to a quick early lead and the Lady Bulldogs pounced on Bridge City for a 9-1 victory on Friday night at Larry Ward Stadium.

LITTLE CYPRESS -- Nederland showcased its usual strong suits, depth and distance runners, to edge Lumberton for the boys team title Thursday night at the 17th annual Battlin' Bear Relays.

SULPHUR–The Sulphur Lady Tors took a commanding 5-0 lead on Wednesday in their second game of the season but Port Neches-Groves came back for a 9-5 extra innings win in Sulphur.

BEAUMONT – Port Neches-Groves High School's Caleb Harmon has had some senior year on and off the football field. The running back blasted defenses for 1,832 yards and 20 touchdowns on 298 carries last fall, pacing the PN-G to its first perfect regular season since 1977.

PORT NECHES — The Port Neches-Groves Lady Indians were a few innings shy of a third-straight second place finish in District 20-4A softball in 2009.

NEDERLAND -- Reliable senior forward Hector Garcia came through once again when Nederland would desperately need it. Garcia received an assist from Brent Salenga and scored the winning goal with 2:10 left in the first 10-minute overtime as Nederland outlasted Little Cypress-Mauriceville, 4-3.

NEDERLAND — The Nederland Bulldogs walloped the Lumberton Raiders 72-48 in Tuesday night's District 20-4A finale.

The Port Arthur Memorial Lady Titans were defeated 66-57 by Class 4A's top ranked Houston Yates Friday afternoon in a playoff tuneup for both teams.

With Tuesday's 42-37 victory over West Brook, Class 5A's No. 15th ranked Memorial Titans clinched their second straight District 21-5A basketball championship and improved to 24-3 overall and 8-0 in league play.

GROVES — Port Neches-Groves Indians will soon join the ranks of other local districts by adding a University Interscholastic League Swim Program.

The Memorial Titans are one win from sealing up a second straight District 21-5A championship. Counting tonight's 7 p.m. matchup with West Brook in Port Arthur, there are three games left in district play.
