Does anyone have some experience with this? I have a couple of flash drives that work but only with the Boot CD. I'm looking for some help in finding and setting bios setting to boot usb drives. I couldnt find much on the Sugar Labs site.
I'm also interested in pointers to VM implementation projects I'm running an emulator for Windows and Linux on my Mac and would like to see if I could do the same with SoaS. I could only find mention of this as a project on the Sugar Labs site.

If you are in California, would you be interested in being part of an OpenSource SIG in CUE? The XO and Sugar would be an important part of what we would cover in the group.

I teach in a middle school in Northern Westchester County New York.
My principal and I have been working on a grant to provide the XOs for all 125 of our incoming fifth graders next year.
I am giving a presentation to the board of the granting organization on Tuesday and would greatly benefit from some discussions about how schools are using the XOs -- both in terms of pedagogy and logistics.
If you would be available for such a conversation -- by phone, by Skype, by IM, by email, please let me know. Or, anything you can post here would be helpful.
Many thanks.
Gerald

This from engadget today: "Rumor is that Nicholas Negroponte is going to transition the OLPC XO entirely to Windows XP to spur sales soon."
Why would an XO have to run XP? Could it run dual OSs? Infighting and Bender not bending over... but resigning instead makes me think the child-centered Sugar design will never get a real test. Seymour Papert, please get well and talk sense into OLPC!

What's going on with you and your XOs? Have you... Connected and collaborated with another XO user? Decided you want to buy another XO now? Tested the apps? Used as a plain old computer? Put in kids hands and watched what happens? Signed up for your year of free TMobile Hotspot access? Spent time in the OLPC Wiki mining gems or news we all need? Used it as a book reader? Wondered when Negroponte says he wants a "Zero Dollar Laptop"? Wondered what's going on with the Birmingham, AL district-wide deployment (the only US one I know of)? Know about the new US school purchasing scheme? Used your mad linux skills to change the machine? Updated software and firmware yet? Shown others the XO, discussed what it represents and how it works? Compared the XO to EeePC or Classmate or Spark? Learned about the OLPC deployment and what's going on now that XOs are in the hands of something like 200,000 kids? Know you'll never use the thing and wonder the best way to give it away? (I can help.)
What can you contribute to our shared understanding, experience? What else are you wondering?

I'm on classroom 2.0 via my XO. The little machine arrived yesterday and after some tinkering, it is talking to my home wless network. I found the linux cmd ine,ran a few basic cmds like ls, ps, and cp. Tried out the video, snapped a photo, embedded it in a write app, and played a few instruments. Now...if only I can get used to this tiny keyboard. Will take it into school on Monday and watch kid reactions as they welcome our new "pet"computer. I *am* impressed.

If you know kids who have gotten their hands on the little green machine send them to The XO Experience, a new blog for students launched by Jeff Utecht.
Looking forward to more from Jeff, who just joined our group.
Curious what you XO users and the youth in XO Experience think about the noun v. verb construction that's supposed to explain Sugar... Recently blogged about here in RPBL blog.

So far, my XO has still not arrived, but I'm enjoying various stories around the blogosphere. The hard part is that I announced to my grade 4 class that we would be getting one back in December - now they ask about it everyday. Perhaps a good lesson in patience? :-)

Getting started with a new kind of computer is challenging. David Thornburg helps us figure out the XO user interface Sugar by explaining that it was designed to suit how kids perceive the world. Read this post, but more importantly, read Dr. Thornburg's paper! Illuminating!

Who are the other players in the small computers market? Any of you familiar with these?
*ASUS eeePC: An internet-ready small computer.
*Intel Classmate: "Closing the digital divide a billion people at a time." OY
*Pixel Qi: Exiting CTO of OLPC started a commercial venture, a $75.00 laptop, the Pixel Qi.
*Alphasmart: Any news here?

Today I uploaded my video review of the XO Laptop to YouTube. A couple of weeks ago I uploaded my first video ever to YouTube, and two days ago I uploaded a video demo of the XO Laptop ebook reader.
If you're intersted you can take a look at them here.
It's been a good learning experience for me, and I'm glad that the XO and the OLPC was able to be the motivating factor that caused me to explore how to create and upload videos. It's really not that tough and I plan to create more in my role as a librarian. And, hopefully, they will get better with practice!

Hi all,
I tried to add some info to the wiki (above) and they just disappeared. I gave up. Anyone else try it?

My friend, Bud the Teacher, created a nice podcast reflection on using the XO for collaboration. He used a site that has been set up by Tom Hoffman for XO folks to connect and use the sharing activities with others.
Here is Bud's podcast
He gives some honest assessment of the possibilities and the limitations.
And it makes me want to use the Jabber site he mentions to try to connect in with some other XO folks.

I am extremely interested in how the XOs are being used in the developing countries. I just found an article and video where students and teachers in Peru are interviewed about using the XOs. It is all in Spanish, but I ran the transcript through Google Translate so you can get a general understanding of the video even if you don't understand Spanish.

I'm meeting with local XO users in Eugene, Oregon on Friday. Here's our (emerging) agenda for the meeting. Ideas for other topics we might address? Side note: I was curious what other f2f user groups were doing so I poked through the group listings on the OLPC wiki. See any groups in your area? Have you meshed yet?

My dad bought one for my daughter for Xmas and it just arrived. Boy, is she thrilled! I love the design and it's perfect for my third grader. Now, if I could only figure out what to do with the SD card of pictures I just inserted... I need to play with this machine when she finally relinquishes it! Maybe at bedtime!
