When State of Decay debuted on Xbox Live last June, it broke a number of genre gameplay conventions: characters die permanently, story progression isn’t pre-scripted, and the world continues to change even when players are offline. Fans responded enthusiastically to this “zombie survival fantasy” spin on the genre, ensuring a bright future for the State of Decay franchise.

So what’s next for State of Decay? In Spring 2015, Xbox One owners will have the opportunity to experience the definitive version of State of Decay with the Year One Survival Edition. Earlier this week, we paid a visit to Undead Labs’ studios to learn more:

The State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition will include the original State of Decay, now running in glorious 1080p, previously released Add-Ons Breakdown and Lifeline, as well as some entirely new content. Undead Labs will reveal more on the new content closer to release, and you’ll read about it here when they do.

Today, we will begin rolling out new features and updates to Xbox One for fans all over the world. These updates include new ways to bring your personal media to your Xbox, updates to the party system, more ways to interact with your Xbox, and new social features for Xbox SmartGlass. We highlighted some of these new features earlier this month at gamescom, and based on continuous fan feedback, we’re pleased to announce the list of the features rolling out to Xbox One systems over the next few days:

  • A new Media Player app: Play media files from an attached USB device with the new media player app – DNLA support for home media servers coming soon. Xbox One will support more formats than Xbox 360, including support for dozens of new file formats like Mpeg 2 TS, animated gifs and MKV, which will be added by the end of the year.
  • Party on in the new and improved Party App: Be the leader of your party with the new party leader setting. As the party leader, you can change whether the party requires invitations and you can remove others from the party. The updated app also lets you see what activities everyone in your party is doing and who is playing in the same game with you in addition to being able to quickly perform common actions like muting, joining, or sending game invites.
  • New features for SmartGlass: You can now post status messages from the Activity Feed and comments, or share items from both your Activity Feed and Game Clips. Along with the new comment and share features, a personalized Activity Feed has been added to your profile and messages have been updated to a new layout supporting a full conversation view. Additionally, we are adding the ability to record game clips directly from the Now Playing bar. Finally, for users who upgrade the app directly, we have introduced a What’s New page highlighting the features of each release.
  • “Xbox On” capabilities in Australia, Canada (French), Italy, Spain, and Mexico: New regions will have the ability to use the “Xbox On” Kinect voice command to power on their consoles when they’re in connected standby (Instant On) mode.
  • OneGuide comes to Brazil, Mexico, Austria, and Ireland: The ability to configure live TV listings will be available to all customers in these four countries. Also coming to these markets is the ability to use OneGuide and the Universal Remote Control in SmartGlass.
  • Boot to TV: Now Xbox One owners will be able to set their console to boot directly to television when coming out of connected standby.
  • Bandwidth Usage Display: Bandwidth Usage will show users how much bandwidth their Xbox One is consuming over a period of time, a useful tool for those who want to track against bandwidth caps set by ISPs in certain markets.
  • GameDVR deletes: Users will be able to choose multiple GameDVR clips to delete at once in the Upload app.
  • Save your Avatar Gamerpic: A new option to save Avatar Gamerpics to users’ OneDrive.

Please continue to share your feedback on our dedicated Xbox Feedback site and you might see your suggestions become a reality in future system updates. Look out for new features lighting up consoles in our preview program in the coming weeks.

Game Description: In 2013 the world was devastated by an apocalyptic event, annihilating almost all mankind and turning the earth’s surface into a poisonous wasteland. A handful of survivors took refuge in the depths of the Moscow underground, and human civilization entered a new Dark Age. The year is 2033. An entire generation has been born and raised underground, and their besieged Metro Station-Cities struggle for survival, with each other, and the mutant horrors that await outside. You are Artyom, born in the last days before the fire, but raised underground. Having never ventured beyond the city limits, one fateful event sparks a desperate mission to the heart of the Metro system, to warn the remnants of mankind of a terrible impending threat. But will they even listen? Rather than stand united, the factions of the Metro are locked in a struggle for the ultimate power, a doomsday device from the military vaults of D6. A civil war is stirring that could wipe humanity from the face of the earth forever. Including the epic single-player campaigns of both Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light, Metro Redux takes you on a journey from the forgotten catacombs beneath the subway to the desolate wastelands above, where your actions will determine the fate of mankind.

Fans of flight in Grand Theft Auto V have a lot of new content to enjoy starting today, with the free release of GTA Online’s San Andreas Flight School Update. Here’s more from our friends at Rockstar Games.

Enjoy the thrill and exhilaration of being a patriotic hero with the San Andreas Flight School Update for GTA Online. This new update features a collection of new air and land vehicles, aerial solo challenges, and much more.

Grab the stick of the fast and nimble Western Besra training jet and push it to the edge of the envelope. Master absolute air superiority in 10 new solo missions that will make you comfortable in any pilot’s danger zone, including combat maneuvering, low-flying challenges, formation flying and more.

Once it’s ‘mission accomplished’ and you’re out of your heroic new Flight Suit, spend your shore leave buzzing the skies in the luxury Swift helo, or cram your entire squad into the new 16-seater Buckingham Mil-Jet for team transport in style. Hit the silk with a collection of new Chutes and Parachute Bags, and if things get a little out of control, rely on the Reserve Parachute to give you a second chance at that soft landing – or use it to get creative with your precision dives. Later, hit the streets in the shapely Invetero Coquette Classic, available in either hard-top or topless roadster variants for whatever your sea-level speed fix.

And round up your wingmen for new Races, Captures, Contact Missions, Parachute Jumps and more, including the three all-new VS Mission modes. Acquire Targets is a kill-the-carrier style mode where opponents fight in P996 Lazers to control one flag; maintain control for as long as you can to rack up points. In G-Rating, compete against other cadets as you fly to pick up 15 flags in both weapons hot and cold environments. Or try out Air Force Zero, where the defending team must protect an aircraft against an attacking team as it flies to the safe LZ.

Today’s update also introduces a host of gameplay improvements to GTA Online – these include increased payouts for harder to complete missions and GTA$ bonuses for playing missions with others. Plus, GTA$ payouts on replays are no longer reduced and all rewards are now time scaled.

Check out the SA Flight School’s informational video above and prepare yourself for the opportunity to become one of the best of the best.

Download GTA Online San Andreas Flight School Update here, and in case you missed it, Grand Theft Auto V is on sale all week.

In June we announced more than 45 new entertainment experiences coming to Xbox One and we continue to deliver on that commitment with additions like ReddX, an app that we are confident our reddit fans will embrace with open arms.

At Xbox, community is a big part of who we are. And we know at reddit, community makes up the very core of the service there, too. The launch of ReddX on Xbox One is exciting because it combines the intense community involvement we’ve come to know on both platforms with the unique capabilities offered by Xbox One.

Starting tomorrow, you can combine your reddit experience with the biggest screen in your home: thanks to Xbox One, while you game, you can also browse the first-ever reddit app for the TV. ReddX on Xbox One can be Snapped to the side of your TV while you’re gaming or using another app to help you monitor and join in threads on the site while you’re doing anything else. Thanks to ReddX, redditors can interact with each other in similar ways to the reddit.com experience, and in addition unlock unique media achievements named after some of the Internet’s favorite memes. In fact, I just posted the first reddit thread created from a console tonight before we officially launch in the morning – check it out here.

ReddX on Xbox One lets Xbox Live members in the U.S. and Canada check out every subreddit in addition to a customized main page. You can read text and view images, videos and GIFs on your TV and can even zoom in or out of text and images for a closer look.

Using ReddX also allows you to upvote or downvote a thread with just the touch of a button, as well as easily add your comments using your Xbox One controller, media remote or Xbox SmartGlass on your smartphone, tablet or laptop. If you find an image that’s just too good to pass over, ReddX lets you save a photo to your profile or set any image as the background for your ReddX app.

Also launching this week on Xbox One is MTV along with new updates coming to the Twitch app on Xbox One. For more details on those, click here to head over to Xbox Wire.

Today, we will begin rolling out the next Xbox One system update to fans around the world, which will include improved social features to make sharing your gaming experiences with friends better and easier. These new features are a result of your invaluable feedback, including some of the most requested features seen on Xbox Feedback. You can see some of the new features in the video above.
Here’s the final list of the features rolling out to Xbox One systems starting today and over the next few days:

  • Mobile purchase: One of the most requested features on Xbox Feedback. Using Xbox SmartGlass or on Xbox.com, you can remotely purchase games and Add-on content. No more waiting to begin downloading when you get home – if your console is set to automatically take updates, your console will begin downloading your purchase.
  • Activity feed updates: We’re adding new ways for you to interact with friends in the activity feed. The interface will change to a single column scrolling list that is longer and includes more content. We’ll add the ability to post text to your feed, and to “like” and comment on feed items. You can share game clips and anything else in the feed with friends either publically (to your activity feed) or privately (as an attachment to a message). You’ll also be notified when anyone likes, comments on or shares your items. Each user will get a personal feed on their profile, so you can see what specific friends have been up to. And, with SmartGlass, you can see what your friends have shared to their activity feed and “like” specific posts (additional activity feed support coming in future SmartGlass updates).
  • Low battery notification: You asked for it, now a notification will pop up when your controller battery is getting low.
  • Disable notifications during video: Adding the ability to turn off notifications based feedback we heard from you.
  • Enabling 3D Blu-ray: An update to the Blu-ray player app will enable 3D Blu-ray functionality on Xbox One.
  • Last seen time in Friends list: Direct from Xbox Feedback, the friends list will now show how long it’s been since a friend has been online. For example, “Last seen 20m ago: Forza Motorsport 5.”

Please continue to share your suggestions and recommendations on our dedicated Xbox Feedback site. Your sustained feedback is incredibly valuable and I can’t thank you enough for helping us make Xbox the best place to play. Stay tuned for even more new features headed your way in the coming weeks including more social features and a few new updates for watching TV.

With all of the social media sites out there, I wanted to take a moment to let you know where you can officially find me out there on the interwebs.

A good place to start is this very blog….but if you are here, you probably already know that.

RSS: If you are one of those old school folks that uses RSS (Like me!) I offer a full feed you can subscribe to here.

Xbox Live: On Xbox Live I am, of course, Major Nelson. If you own on Xbox One…be sure to follow me over there that way you can jump into any multiplayer games with me or get a notification when I start streaming on my Twitch channel.

Podcast: The podcast is in this section of on the blog, as well as posted on my Soundcloud channel. You find the show in iTunes here.

Twitter: Since November 22, 2006…I’ve been on Twitter which is the best place to track the latest Xbox news, sales and information (among other things I tweet.) My Vines will appear there as well.

Reddit: If you Reddit, you can find me as /u/majornelson  http://www.reddit.com/user/majornelson/ -  I lurk in /r/XboxOne and will drop in on conversations now and then.

Flickr: I post photos over here on my Photostream

Google PlusThis is me on Google Plus and here on my YouTube channel - While I am not as active on G+, I post over there as often as I can and that’s also where we’ll do the occasional Hangout.

Instagram: Into Instagram? I’m over there as well posting occasional objets d’art or short videos.

SnapChat: I am snapping there as “themajornelson“. I am just starting to use SnapChat, so I am still experimenting the best way to use it. Follow me and join the experiment!

NeoGaf: If NeoGAF is your place, I’m over there as  “Major Nelson”

Tech Support/Questions: If you need tech support or help with your Xbox, you should hit up Xbox Support on Twitter. They are standing by ready to help.

Email? Yea…you can reach me here. While I try to read everything I receive, I don’t have time to reply to every email.

I’ve been playing around with Medium here. But since I’ve already got a blog…not sure what I’ll do over there.

Any other social networks I should take a look at ? I’d love to know what you use and how.
