On this episode we have our cool returning guest Kimono Joe on to help tackle one of the most polarized discussions in geek culture worldwide comic industry

JAPANESE MANGA Vs WESTERN COMICS……..FIGHT!!

Inspiration from many current emails / blogs and entertainment events made us want to discuss, analyze and debate the core aspects of this argument from both sides of the field.

To do this properly (In the tyro sense of things mind you) we break our discussion down into the following elements

How we got into comics / manga – our current experience

A brief summary of the birth modern comic / manga (post 1930’s)

Comic / Manga Character Analysis

Comic / Manga Writing / Storytelling Analysis

Differences between the Comic / Manga Business Model

Thoughts on Comic / Manga Illustration / Animation Quality

In relation to all this We also give our thoughts on what is still probably the highest profile west / east comic collaboration to date by Stan Lee & Hiroyuki Takei

NOTEWORTHY MENTIONABLES

Here are some of the interesting documentary titles about comics and manga which come directly from the professional industry.

MANGA MAD

Sadly the mentioned comic docs are still in post-production but from what you see on their project pages they both look VERY illuminating and interesting

So many things I want to say about the last couple days on Spill, but I want to stay positive and creative.

Some of you know me for making Spill Plushies in the past, especially for the co-host plushies. But, for the last couple months I have been secretly making Spill Plushies for RTX in July. I've been trying new items and materials to deliver only the best to the Spill fans. I've been going crazy over it actually. I want to represent my best for Spill, my own professional work and for you guys.

With the latest developments I was not excatly sure that I would be able to share these with you, but Korey assures me that it is okay. Besides I wanted to share the happiness that I feel making these with all of you. I love Spill.com. I wholeheartedly love this community and the friends I have created over the years. I have been following the crew since there was NO Spill.com. Only watching all the videos on YouTube with my sisters laughing our asses off. I know things are difficult and seems like nothing will be the same, but I know the crew and the staff are very hard working passionate people.

Whether it's music, movies, art, or monster making that I get geeky about it's all passion, it's all love. I am attracted to passion in others as I think most of us are. I've seen the tirelessly efforts that Korey puts in everyday on the site in person. I've seen Korey open up his home to spillios that want to party all night when he himself is exhausted but keeps going for the respect of his fans and friends. I've seen Cyrus open up his house and his heart because of the love of his work and fans. Co-host making sure some underage fans find a way home and coming out of his way to spend time with Nick for his Birthday last year. And of course Leon, everyone needs a Leon in there family. Leon is one of the most amazing people that I am lucky to know. He always tries to take the time to talk to everyone about anything even until 2 in the morning. MandySavage, Oh Amanda how I love you. She is my best friend and it's all because of Spill. That first spill.con that we met was magic. I don't think there is a day or at least a week that goes by that we don't try to talk to each other. I know her hard work and late nights that she gets no sleep because of her passion to deliver the best to the site. To the wonderful mastermind that is Fungusmunky who is always very welcoming and helpful and a tech genius,  I bow to you sir. If it wasn't for him there would be no Spill Plushies.

So, back to the Plushies.

I'm really excited guys. I love these a lot. I also designed Spill fabric to make tote bags. But I leave it open to you, the fans. What would you like me to make? What would you like to see at RTX? I will see you in Austin drinking and dancing the night away. Let's make it epic, let's have fun.

Love Steph

It's been a rough couple months for us in general, but I can honestly say that this week is the worst yet. I'm trying to stay positive, but there are times it's simply not working. So many people I will miss working with. I feel a little okay because thankfully most of these people are my friends so it's not like I won't see them, but Spill definitely will not be the same without them. However, like my girlfriend Kelly says "sometimes opportunity doesn't knock so much as it burns your house down".

Just so people have a general idea - we have basically closed up all our podcasts for the time being. Some are gone because their hosts are gone. Some are gone because they're going to become something new. Basically, we got KNOCKEDDAFUGGOUT. Now it's time for us to pick ourselves up, brush ourselves off, and start building the site again from scratch. Yeah that's kind of scary, but kind of exciting in a way too.

We're going to try and help Jeff and Jason land on their feet and take their video game shenanigans into their own hands. We're going to handle daily content slightly differently. We'll still have movie reviews and animated videos and even though we lost a lot of staff, I'm confident in the people we still have and I think this kind of change means that we are a bit more free to try some crazy ideas. Things that we think are really funny, but haven't been able to do yet. Now we can. Why not? We can bring out new and awesome ideas on the podcasts. Who's going to stop us? We can try ideas we couldn't try before. What's the worst they can do? They've let us off the leash basically so now it's up to us what we do from here. And that's exciting.

Read through the responses below (because your question has probably already been answered). If your question hasn't already been answered, post it below. Try to stick to just questions - this is supposed to be informational.

Another year, another party down in Londontown

Korey said he would never come back but I think we all knew he could not resist

Once again I think almost all of us had a great time. I saw A LOT of familiar faces and most of us are now hyped up for the upcoming Croatia party week coming this August 2013!

But anywayz as I state in the video this is not what I would call my best coverage but since I know y’all like to see how we get down I thought something is better than nuttin – so please keep the bitchin to the minimum about the darkness >_<

I missed a lot of my US peeps coming this time around, hope y’all can make it next time

Well at least I got the a cool video podcast of  LET’S HAVE IT!  This time around

ENJOY!

It looks like Michael Bay's 'Trans4mers' has found its villain, and I'm not talking about Megatron. The fourth installment of the franchise based on the 80s toyline/cartoon series currently boasts Mark Wahlberg and Stanley Tucci on its cast roster. Now they can also add Kelsey Grammer to the list. Grammer will play Harold Attinger, a character who is said to be a counterintelligence agent. He will evidently be the film's principal human antagonist. This is not Grammer's first foray into a blockbuster this size. He played Hank McCoy/Beast in Brett Ratner's 'X-Men: The Last Stand' in 2006. 'Transformers 4' is set to begin production this coming July ahead of a June 27th, 2014 release.

This is a great acquisition for 'Trans4mers.' Most people know Kelsey Grammer from 'Fraiser,' and are probably therefore unconvinced of his aptitude for playing villains. However, I would like to point you to two items on his resume. The first is the Starz series 'Boss,' in which he plays the more-than-a-touch corrupt mayor of Chicago. That series is a dark, severe Machiavellian drama and Grammer turns in a powerhouse performance in each episode. Also, let us not forget that Grammer voices one of the greatest villains in television history: Sideshow Bob. I do feel bad for Grammer in that he's never really found a foothold in blockbuster cinema. As mentioned, he was in 'X-Men: The Last Stand,' but that is also widely considered the worst of the X-Men films. I'm not sure that the fourth Transformers movie is going to fare much better in turning Grammer into a summer movie mainstay.

What do you guys think? Are you excited Grammer is coming aboard? Do you think this might lead to his having more of a presence in blockbuster movies in the future?

There is almost nothing about this trailer that doesn't excite me. From the art style to the concept this game looks like one big perfect ball of great. Yet imagine my chagrin when at the end it says the game will be exclusive for Ouya. NO! I understand the creators of the Ouya wanting an exclusive for their console, but all this is doing is making me put this game out of my mind. Despite the fact that Kim Swift is attached to it, no game is worth buying a whole console just to play. Maybe we can get a chance to try Soul Fjord in a few years if (when) the Ouya finally dies out.

No word on a release date, but Soul Fjord will be on the Ouya.

What happens when you use copy and paste on a video game? You get 'Dead Island: Riptide'.

'Dead Island: Riptide' is the sequel to 'Dead Island' and it follows the same format of being a first person survival game during a zombie apocalypse. This time around, the plot is that some survivors from the original game are stranded on an island that's been overrun with zombies. That's really all there is to it as far as story goes and I'm going to be completely honest with you guys; this game is the same as the first one. Same gameplay, same awkward controls and same glitches. I bought this game wanting a new game. Instead I get the first game with a different title and cover case. I might as well be playing 'Call of Duty' at this point.

To start, the concept of a zombie apocalypse game where you're in first person mode still doesn't work. There's still the problem of not being able to see just how far or close a zombie is to you, therefore, not being able to hit the damn thing. In games where it's the third person perspective, you get a better sense of telling how far away a zombie is and then being able to hit it at the right time. You would think that the creators of this game would want to be able to fix that problem, but we're just left with frustrating gameplay where you die a lot.

The graphics for this game are also really underwhelming. I liked the way the first game looked, but I was also hoping that the sequel would have graphics that were upgraded. It turns out that we get graphics that are just meh. The island you're on should be this huge, fun to look at environment like with Columbia in 'Bioshock Infinite'. What we actually get is this environment that's ok to look at, but there's really nothing special as far as impressive design goes. It looks like any other island you've been on in any other video game. That's really the only way that I can sum up how disappointing the graphics are.

I will say that if there's one thing I liked most out of the game is the gameplay. Yes, it's difficult at times due to the stiff controls, but when you start to play it more, the more fun it gets to go around killing zombies. You have a pretty decent arsenal. It's not like you just get maybe one or two weapons and the rest is just your fists. I can say that going around killing zombies and not really giving a shit about the story is the highlight of the game. If you're willing to just shut your brain off and just go around mindlessly killing zombies while being willing to overcome some awkward controls, you'll most likely have a fun time playing this game.

I also liked how you can import your save from the original game to this game so that your level is equal to the enemies your facing. The game could've just started you at some really weak level and then throw all the difficult enemies at you, but instead you have the opportunity to start with a level that fits you and now you can face enemies that are easy enough for you to deal with, thus being able to level up easier. I think that leveling up is the one thing that kept me playing the game. I've always been a sucker for leveling up in games and being able to develop as the game progresses. It makes me feel better at the game when I look at where I was and compare it to where I am now.

However, my biggest issue with the game is that it has nothing new to offer other than importing your save. I was hoping that a lot of the content from the first game would either be fixed or expanded upon and maybe the game would add some of its own original ideas, but we're left with a game that comes off as lazy.

'Dead Island: Riptide' is a game that I think most people will be on the fence about. Some will like it for continuing the fun of the first game, some will dislike it for being pretty much the first game all over again. I think that the gameplay is fun and frustrating at the same time, the controls are stiff, the graphics are disappointing, the story is predictable, the ability to level up is a nice touch and being able to roam the island is fun in its own right, but I can't being myself to call this a good game that you should play right away. You're better off waiting until it's one of those games you find in the $10.00 or less bin at GameStop.

Rating: 5.5/10

Of all of the game studios whom fans wanted to make their own animated movie I didn't expect it would be the team behind Ratchet & Clank who would be the first out of the gate. Before fans begin to light their torches and pull their pitchforks out of whoever was the last person they threw their hatred towards, the people responsible for making Ratchet & Clank are working with the studio on this. So when the movie comes out and is not to your liking you can blame the very makers of the game themselves. Having not owned a Playstation at any point in time I haven't gotten the opportunity to play any of the Ratchet & Clank games, but I know that the humor is a staple of the series. From what this trailer shows it at least appears to have a good sense of what it is and how to make fun of it. Who knows, maybe we may be looking at the first good video game movie. Assuming Carlyle drops the ball with Deus Ex.

The Ratchet & Clank animated movie will be in theaters in 2015.

Wii U, DLC, and eShop

Pikmin 3 Release Date

We finally got a confirmed release date on the game that was supposed to launch alongside the Wii U but couldn't due to delays. Pikmin 3 will be available in store or on the eShop on August 4th, 2013.

Game & Wario

Another iteration of the Wario Ware series was bound to come along eventually. This game came out in Japan last month to mixed reviews. Try it out for yourself when it gets released on June 23rd, 2013.

Mario & Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move

The reason I didn't put this on the 3DS posts was because this game will only be available on the eShop. It is a interesting move from Nintendo and I think they couldn't have picked a better game to try this method of selling on. I really like how you can build and share your own maps with the rest of the community. Mario & Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move will be available on the 3DS eShop on May 11th, 2013.

New Super Mario Bros Luigi Wii U

Alright then. It seems odd that they would release a piece of DLC that focuses on one specific character when most of the time in New Super Mario Bros it seemed they tried to encourage multiple players. Still, if you can't get enough New Super Mario Bros then I don't doubt you will want to pick this up when it comes out sometime this summer on the eShop.

Games Coming to eShop

Finally along with all of the announcements of new games and DLC came the names of old titles that will be available for purchase for Virtual Console on the eShop. As you can see from the image above one of those is in fact Earthbound. Accompanying this announcement was one stating the you will also be able to purchase Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons. No official release dates have been given but expect them sometime this year.

Well that does it for the news coming out of Nintendo Direct. If I missed anything please point it out to me in the comments below. Here are parts one and two.
