Back in September (sorry, I've been busy craigslisting card catalogs and seeing how many cardigans I can stuff in my closet) I won a little pay it forward giveaway from Meghan. So now it's my time to pay up and choose five people to receive a little prize. But wait just one second eager beaver, before you sign up there's a little catch. If you're one of the five chosen, you have to promise in return that you'll pass along prizes to five other people. Because if you don't, I will hunt you down and take your prize right back.
Sound like a plan? For your chance to win, leave a comment on this post by Wednesday, November 25th. Oh, and don't think that the prize has to be a solid gold chocolate bar. A fun postcard or batch of cookies would suffice.

I'm currently performing a little before and after action in our apartment and I'm seeking inspiration from these alternatives to framing art.
Also, I really love, I mean really love the short carts popping up in grocery stores. And there's your random thing you didn't need to know about me for the day.

A couple sources for really big round balloons:
Airy Greetings
Steps to Memories (via Joanna)
Just note that they are a bit pricey to blow up but they're fun to have around. They're reflecting our twinkle lights right now and it's an instant Tuesday night party.

Congratulations Pretty Swell, your fabric flower garlands have successfully taken over the #1 spot on my Etsy wishlist. I would like a dozen or so to adorn my apartment.
Love them as much as I do? Heather is hosting a giveaway this week for one lovely strand. Go try your luck.

I'd thought I share a little idea that maybe a few of you would like to adopt. You know those friends you have that have a specific talent (or several) that you would just love to learn? I have one such friend, Natalia, who is a graphic designer and I admire her work greatly. I wanted to learn the basics of graphic design so I approached her with a proposition, if she taught me a few things, I would watch her kids for an equal amount of time that she spent on the class. It worked out pretty swimmingly and we both enjoyed the classes and chatting for a bit each week. Plus, the only cost was our time.
So friends, I'll teach you how to make an incredible loaf of wheat bread if you ... well, what would you love to offer?

On Saturday, Katie and I hosted a baby shower for a beautiful and hilarious friend of ours, Kim. This was the shower that the infamous invites were created for and like you predicted, their handmadeness was appreciated. I incorporated my favorite party elements:
buntings (in making these I realized hot glue is my best friend)
good food (three words: cranberry cheddar cheeseball) and a ribbon chandelier (how-to here)
a table of desserts (those coconut cream cheese cupcakes are b-a-n-a-n-a-s)
mason jars and stripey straws
round balloons that are the size of a small country
twinkle lights
a sweet little list for the babe (I hoped that he would grow a thick mustache)
originally found from Paige
and caramel apple favors (if anybody has advice on how to get the caramel to stick, please share, ours were a little skimpy)
Afterwards I collapsed on the couch, watched Project Runway and slept for the rest of the weekend. Parties can be draining but they're so worth it. Who's next?
PS I shared my list of five over at Melisa's blog last week.

Each season the Project Runway finale is bittersweet for me. Sweet because I love seeing the final collections. Bitter because then I have to wait like six months before I see Tim Gunn on a weekly basis again. I am looking forward to what Irina has up her sleeve next week and kind of hoping she gets beat just to humble her up a bit. Here's some ideas of how to celebrate.
For invites you could write info on a slip of paper then wrap it around a spool like these ones Cathe made for an advent calendar.
For food I'm thinking some traditional German fare in honor of Heidi's heritage. You know, sausage, soft pretzels and strudel.
For decor you could do a simple scatter of sewing goods. You could also try recreating your own Macy's accessories wall by blowing up a photo of the Macy's logo and hanging necklaces, purses and photos of shoes underneath it.
During commercial breaks, you could make guests design clothing for paper dolls and then have judges decide the official winner. I would make an excellent Nina Garcia. I just need some stilettos and a look of disgust. (thanks to Katie for the idea)
And you could print off designs from the season and have people match them with who created the look. You could also print off photos of some of the more obscure designers from previous seasons and see who can remember the most names. Also, it would be fun to glue a photo of Tim onto a human cardboard cutout and have people take pictures with it.
If we had cable I would totally invite you all to this party. If you want to, you can join us on the Saturday after the finale and crowd around our computer. But you must bring some dipping sauce.

photo from Elsie via Oh me, oh my
The other day I was teaching a kindergarten class and one girl was waving her hand frantically. When I called on her she simply said, "You look really pretty today." And then another little girl chimed in, "You're smile is really beautiful." They were so excited to offer a compliment, they could hardly sit still. When I told Ryan this story he said, "At what age do we just stop giving compliments so freely and enthusiastically?" I hope never. My new goal is to give sincere compliments whenever I think something good about another person. Because you really do look pretty today.

Alyson just introduced me (and anybody else who reads Unruly Things, it wasn't exclusive) to the blog Habit and it's become my absolute fave. Molly and Emily provide beautiful photos and sweet sentiments that celebrate daily happenings. You'll find yourself sighing a little after every post. If I were to write one for today I would say, "Two pieces of fresh bread and Simple Orange Juice makes for a great beginning of the day." I'm not quite as eloquent.

Question: I'm looking for some help to pretty this site up. Know anyone with skills?

Our Labor of Love creates some pretty impressive photo booth backdrops but I'm especially fond of the fabric streamers. Question is, where do you get loads of fabric on the cheap? Maybe I could get a job at Joanns for the discount. I would be the worst fabric cutter ever but I've heard quilters make good friends. Actually I totally made that up. I think I was thinking of Virginia is for lovers and that still makes no sense. One too many mini candy bars for me today.

Good idea alert: grab a slab of slate and some chalk to label your food dishes at your next little get together. Saves you from having to answer, "What is this?" a bajillion times. Because sometimes the mushroom caps turn out a little weird.

I have almost given up on this week when our microwave decided that it no longer wanted the stop/reset button to work but then along came 'Roid Week and it was a little pat on the back to help me through the ordeal. I just sit back, enjoy polaroids and avoid the fact there's a flashing :54 happening in our kitchen.
Love you polaroids. Love you Friday.

Nicole sent me the best snickerdoodles I've ever had. I swear they were still warm when I opened up the package.
Lynn used some of my polaroids for her new product photos. I kind of feel famous. Papermash is just so lovely.
And remember how I was like, "I want this JCrew cardigan but it's sold out so you should make one and then send me the tutorial." Ummm, guess what? Anjelica really did. And it might be even cuter than the original.
You guys really are my fave. And not just the ones who send me presents. Your comments are always a bright spot in my day.

With careful consideration from your gobs of comments last week, I've decided to stick with the title spotted and hearted. I think my favorite from the new suggestions was Faveing is my Fave. It reminded me of the name Flava Flav and although I don't know quite who or what that is, it made me bust out in a homie dance thinking about it. So as promised, Rachael, you'll be getting a small surprise in the mail from me.

Today is a good day in the Blodgett household because Weezer's seventh album is now available for our listening and dancing pleasure. I tried to convince Ryan to splurge a little and get the Weezer snuggie too but no dice. He thinks a blanket should suffice for my warming needs.

You know when you start working on a project and you have great thoughts of how it's going to turn out but then half way through you realize it's not going to work out as great as you planned but you've already put in so much time you just press forward hoping that somehow it will just work out? I saw these wedding menu wheels a little while back and decided to make invitations with the same idea. I don't know why I ever thought I could pull something off that was featured on Design Sponge.

This is how theirs turned out:

Beautiful, awe-inspiring, sending gasps throughout blog land.
And this is how mine turned out:

Skiwumpus and homemade-ish in a bad way.
If you're thinking of trying to attempt these, email me and I'll give you advice on how to make them better. But my first word of advice is to just turn to your designer friends and have them make something better for you.
So why am I wasting your valuable time by posting something that's so not awesome? Because I'm finding myself totally bummed out about them and caring way more than I should. So I need some pick-me-ups from you, my always awesome readers. Here are a few examples of comments you could leave for me that would definitely make me feel better:
"It's okay, everyone will forget about them once they see how stunningly beautiful you are."
"You're the best around, nothing's ever going to keep you down."
"If you were in a awesome person contest, you would win first prize."
I have a feeling this is going to work.
And for those who stuck with me through that all that rambling, here's a prize - a double sleeping nook. Hoorah.

I've kind of been offline for the last couple of days since I've been spending time creating baby shower invites that have sucked the life out of me and they're not even that great. Bummed. Anyway, I just saw that yesterday my little guest post popped up over The Lil Bee, one of my very most faves. Head on over and tell Melisa congrats on the arrival of the cutest lil bee ever.
