I use CloudFlare to power my main WordPress Website and love what CloudFlare offers. I fortunately received an invite to try out the Google PageSpeed Service and am very interested to see just how effective the PageSpeed service is. I’m also curious in understanding whether PageSpeed and CloudFlare are competing services or how they differ.

Using PageSpeed with WordPress

I decided to try the PageSpeed service on an Australian WordPress Website developer Website. I was initially concerned as there can be problems when utilising various techniques that PageSpeed employs on WordPress Websites (such as CSS and JavaScript minification). Upon setting up the PageSpeed service I noticed that there are many options that can be enabled or disabled so if problems are encountered then the option can simply be disabled in the Google PageSpeed Service dashboard.

First impressions of the PageSpeed Service

It’s probably best to note that I’ve only just begun to use the PageSpeed service so some of my findings may be misguided. Saying that, I really love how simple it is to setup a domain to use the service. I also like that the PageSpeed service runs by using a CNAME record and therefore doesn’t need to host the DNS records (I’m a fan of AWS Route53 DNS and wish that CloudFlare allowed for using an external DNS host … although CloudFlare DNS is actually very good).

Besides the video showing the apparent speed improvements of the Home Page it’s still too early for me to provide comments on the speed. I have seen ‘though that content is being served via PageSpeed (specifically the 1-ps.googleusercontent.com domain) in the network tab in Firefox Firebug.

Google PageSpeed Service is certain to be awesome in improving the load speed of Webpages (great for SEO). Much will depend on how much Google charges to use the service. At present setting up PageSpeed isn’t as slick as setting up CloudFlare. CloudFlare also offers a different offering in that much of CloudFlares competitive advantage centres on it’s inbuilt security. As PageSpeed matures we’ll get a better idea of just how good it is (it’s still very early days for PageSpeed).

Video Comparing Page Load Speed before and after Google PageSpeed Service

For your viewing pleasure, here is a riveting example of a WordPress Website Page load speed both before and after PageSpeed service implementation (tests for Singapore as the facility doesn’t exist to compare load speeds in Australia).

Please share on Twitter, Facebook or Google+. Thank you :)

The title is catchy and strangely enough it’s true that my Website visitors increased by about 100 daily instantly. There are hundreds of factors that Google, Bing and other Search Engines take into consideration when ranking where Webpages appear in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). We know that things like having quality links pointing to a Website and making Websites simple to navigate are SEO ranking factors.

What is often overlooked in SEO analysis is considering if our permalinks and titles attract people to click on out results in the SERPs. A title like Get a free Website will always attract more people to click than Spend over $5000 and get a website thrown in. In Google Adwords (as I expect in organic Search Engine rankings), the proportion of times a person clicks an advert as opposed to how often an ad  is shown is measured and is influential as to the ad placement (i.e. advert placement is about more than just paying the highest cost per click).

Anyway, back to the relevance of this title of the post and how my visitor numbers increased; my domain name was eckstein.id.au and I was getting frustrated with people constantly asking what the domain extension .id.au was all about so I decided to change my domain and trading name. My new domain name is organicweb.com.au and, for whatever reason, my visitor numbers have increased as has the time spent on the Site in addition to a higher proportion of repeat visitors. Of course I made sure that all 301 redirects were in place and so on therefore making navigation simple for the Search Engines.

Just a simple domain name change and Website analytics look better. Contact me if you need help in moving your WordPress Website to a new domain or host.

One rather strange and annoying characteristic of using ClickBank to sell products or services (i.e. as a vendor) is that there there isn’t an instant email notifying the seller of a sale. Of course this doesn’t matter too much if selling a digital or other downloadable product but it really matters if the vendor needs to do something manually to provide the product or service (e.g. a WordPress premium install service).

ClickBank vendor emails with WordPress

If you, like tens of millions of other people, use WordPress to power your Website then there is a very simple solution. Installing a Plugin that enables ClickBank sale emails and performing a few steps at clickbank.com is all that is needed.

  1. Install and activate the ClickBank Sale Notification Plugin on your WordPress Site.
  2. Login to ClickBank and go to Settings -> My Site.
  3. Click Edit in the Advanced Tools section.
  4. Enter a secret key of 16 characters (numbers and uppercase letters).
  5. Request access to the API and then enter http://YOUR-DOMAIN/notify.php in the Instant Notification URL and select 2.1 as the version.
  6. From the WordPress Dashboard go to Settings -> Clickbank Sale and enter the necessary information and click Save Options.

It’s worth performing a test purchase of your ClickBank product to ensure that you are now receiving emails when a product is purchased.

ClickBank vendor emails with using PHP

For those not using WordPress there is an option to use a simple PHP script (that uses similar functionality to the WordPress solution). I haven’t tested this solution but head on over to the ClickScoop Website to check it out.

There we go, you now know how to Set-up Email notifications for ClickBank Sales.

Using a Samsung Galaxy S2 or S3 and getting the error ”Unfortunately, Touchwiz home has stopped”? Fortunately there is a simple way to solve the problem.

What devices are affected?

I use a Samsung Galaxy S2 on the Virgin Mobile network in Australia and recently updated to Android version 4.1.2. Once upgraded the Touchwiz error kept showing and the phone became unusable (I believe that the Touchwiz problem also occurs when running Android 4.2/Jelly Bean). This seems like a common problem with Samsung Galaxy phones on almost all Australian mobile networks (Optus, Telstra, Vodafone).

What is Samsung Touchwiz?

Touchwiz is the Samsung user interface. This means that it is Samsung developed software (i.e. not part of Google Android itself). Here is a video describing Touchwiz:

Instructions to get rid of the error

Here are the steps to take to fix the problem (on a Galaxy S2 although I’m sure it’s fairly similar for an S3):

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Under Device click Home screen mode.
  3. Select Easy mode.
  4. Click Apply.

That’s all. The ”Unfortunately, Touchwiz home has stopped” should no longer appear but if you still have problems then install the Nova Launcher App from Google Play and this will be used on your phone instead of Touchwiz.

I often get asked the question, is it worth advertising Online? Generally small businesses and individuals are referring to Google Adwords , Bing Ads or Yahoo Search Marketing and specifically to the text adverts that appear in the Search Results Pages (SERPs).

There is no simple yes/no answer as to whether someone should advertise using the Search Engines. The potential benefits all relate down to a few simple calculations.

Conversion rates

Assuming that the goal of your landing Page (the Webpage you choose people to land on when they click the advert) is for visitors to buy something then we need to know the following; how many visitors to the Webpage does it take for there to be a sale? This is called the conversion rate. A good landing Page gets about a 1% conversion rate i.e. it takes 100 visitors to get a single sale.

Customer lifetime value

Now it’s needed to calculate how much a customer is worth to you (life-time value (LTV) of the customer). The lifetime value of a customer can be difficult to calculate but it’s important not to overstate the value; the aim is to use advertising to make money so you shouldn’t be spending more on advertising than you make from it (of course we should really take cash flow into consideration here). The LTV is the average profit or loss from a single customer. LTV is relatively simple to calculate for once-off purchases but for repeat customers and subscription products it’s more difficult.

What is the maximum Cost to Acquire a Customer (CAC)

As we know what the life-time value of a customer is, we can estimate how much we can spend to get a new customer (i.e. what our cost to acquire a customer (CAC) can be).

Using a very simple example, suppose that the average customer buys twice from you and the total profit is $100 over the two purchases. You could then spend $100 to gain a new customer – your CAC could be $100 (yes, I know this is very simplistic but you get the point :)  ).

How to Calculate the Costs Per Click (CPC)

So, how much should you spend on Online advertising? CPC is how much you can afford to spend each time someone clicks on our advert (Google, Bing and other ad networks allow you to specify a maximum amount you want to spend on each click).

We know, as described above, what our conversion rates should be (about 1%) and how much we could spend on a new customer acquisition through the CAC calculation therefore our calculation is as simple as:

CAC  x Conversion Rate = Cost Per Click

Using an example:

Maximum CAC = $150

Conversion rate = 1%

$150 x 1% = $1.50 (we can afford to spend $1.50 per click).

There are many other things that can be done to improve our conversion rates (such as better landing Page design) as well as other things. Contact me to discuss how you can grow your business through Online advertising.

In WordPress StudioPress and WooThemes  Themes, if you use column classes (i.e. you use columns in your Posts or Pages), you may notice that sometimes text below the columns are incorrectly aligned. This is due to the float CSS element and is easily solved with a bit of HTML and CSS (using the clear CSS element).

How to clear floats

Follow the simple steps below and your Genesis Framework or WooFramework content will again be correctly aligned:

  1. In the WordPress WYSIWYG editor, go into your Page or Post.
  2. In the Text tab enter the following immediately after your column DIVs / classes:
    <div style="clear: both;"></div>

That’s all and your text following the columns should now look brilliant!

I see so many WordPress Websites that have ‘broken’ or had all sorts of problems after installing updates. Every Website that I see that experiences these issues has had something done that goes against best-practice or is a result of really bad Web design or development.
It is absolutely necessary for functionality and security reasons to apply updates so here are some guidelines to help in avoiding WordPress update errors.

Only use well coded Plugins & Themes Only

Only ever install Plugins and Themes listed at wordpress.org. Make sure that the Plugin or Theme is compatible with the latest version of WordPress and that reviews are good. For example, using a commercial WordPress Theme by a developer not listed on wordpress.org in the commercial Themes section, holds a far higher risk of problems than using a Theme from a seller listed on wordpress.org.

But what about Plugins that aren’t free (wordpress.org only lists free Plugins)? Well, almost all good Plugins for which you need to pay, there is a free version available at wordpress.org (examples include S2Member membership Plugin and  Events Manager for displaying, booking and payment of events).

Don’t make code or style changes (unless you know what you’re doing)

You really need to know what you’re doing if you’re making changes directly to files in Plugins, Themes or WordPress itself. If you make changes to code you really muat be sure of where it is best to make the changes e.g. often, with hooks, you can make changes via a custom functions.php file (and the custom functions.php won’t be overwritten with updates).

Listen to your WordPress developer

Ultimately a Web developer needs to deliver what is agreed with the client. Problems come in if the client insists in knowing better than the developer particularly with technical issues. I have encountered clients who insist on doing something a certain way because their ‘friend’ said this must be done; in these cases no matter how much evidence is given to the client that their way is a really bad idea, the client insists on their solution. Once the Website has problems because the client refused to listen to the developer it’s too late. Please listen to what the developer has to say. A developer isn’t always right but a good developer won’t want any Websites he/she has built to have problems.

Avoid low budget WordPress developers

This is a broad generalisation but quality takes time and money. Good WordPress developers charge alot for good reason; they save you time and money in the long run.
As an example, the quickest way to make a style change with CSS is to add the necessary script to the active Theme style.css file. The problem with this is that on the next Theme update the amended style.css file will be replaced therefore all changes will be lost. A good, but more expensive WordPress developer will use a means of adding the script that won’t be lost upon update (but this takes more time and skill hence the higher cost of the developer).

Following the tips above will greatly reduce the chance of problems with your Website. Please contact me if you need WordPress advice or guidance.

I’ve setup alot of ClickBank eCommerce Websites over the years for both sellers and affiliates (yes, all WordPress Websites). ClickBank has some very good advantages over the majority of payment gateways and payment processors including its leading affiliate platform and low start-up fees (as opposed to e.g. Eway and PayPal Payflow payment gateways and payment processors such as Westpac and NAB).

Are you interested in learning ClickBank in Australia?There is a very specific process involved in setting up ClickBank in addition to Websites that sell products using ClickBank. Unfortunately the whole process is difficult to get right and many people quit before they see advantages of using ClickBank to sell.

Are you interested in Clickbank training?

Whilst everyone is (unnecessarily?) freaking out about WordPress security, here is a quick security fix that will help secure a hacked Website.

  1. On your Webhost, open wp-config.php in a text editor using FTP (or your file manager if you’re using Cpanel).
  2. Add the following to the end of the file:
    define('DISALLOW_FILE_EDIT', true);
  3. Save the changes to wp-config.php back to the Webhost.

What the above does is remove the ability to edit Theme or Plugin files when logged into WordPress (the security precaution being addressed with this fix is that a hacker may gain access to the editor and insert malware into such core WordPress files as header.php or footer.php).

Of course prevention is better than cure so please make sure you are using a very strong password in addition to a unique username (i.e. not admin, Admin or root).

O.k., the title of this Post is absolute garbage. Over the past few days there has been a brute force attack targeting WordPress and Joomla. The attack on WordPress targets WordPress and Joomla Sites that use the usernames adminAdminadministrator,test, and root. A dictionary of commonly used passwords is then used to try to break into the Website.

The thing is that you really have nothing to worry about if you take the basic security precautions. Three years ago WordPress stopped using admin as the default username. We all should also be using unique and strong passwords as this is  just basic security best practice.

Another thing to know is that there are attempted hacking of all types of Websites (HTML, Drupal, WordPress, Joomla, Magento etc.) continuously and the only reason that the recent attempt has gotten so much news is because of the scale; the recent hacking attempt isn’t advanced at all and only people with very weak security may be affected.

Here is what you can do to greatly diminish the chance of being hacked by the recent attack:

Click go (the green search button)  in the Duck Duck Go search box below and change your password within WordPress (and make absolutely sure you aren’t using a username such as Admin or root).

Then, if you want even more security, start using CloudFlare and contact me if you need assistance with setting up CloudFlare or getting more WordPress security.

There are many reasons that your Website should be using font icon fonts wherever possible in place of images. Icon fonts keep great resolution at most sizes (critical nowadays for retina and high dpi/resolution displays), are far lower in weight than images (i.e. you’ll get a faster loading Website) and font icons are really easy to style using CSS.

I’ve blogged about icon fonts (also called glyphs) in the past and use them on all WordPress Website I build now. There are many very good icon fonts available but I tend to use Font Awesome (actually designed for Twitter Bootstrap but works perfectly on WordPress) most of the time. Automattic (parent of WordPress) also make available a set of icon fonts called Genericons however I just prefer the wider choice available by using Font Awesome.

With the release of Font Awesome 3 recently came some great news for dentists, doctors, physiotherapists, first-aiders or anyone else providing medical services or products. Medical icons are now provided which will make your Website look beautiful, load faster and best of all, are screen reader compatible.

If you’d like a better looking medical Website please contact me.

Yip, I’ve recently been tinkering away on my Website and have a whole new design. It was only a few months ago that my Site underwent a thorough revamp but I just wasn’t totally happy with the look of the Site (post revamp). I’m a bit obsessive when it comes to how my WordPress Site looks and operates and I am finally happy with what I have.

WordPress training and WordPress Website design in Australia.

The Site is still based on the fantastic StudioPress Genesis Framework and I’m using a lot more LESS CSS (heck, I love LESS!). Also continuing is the use of Twitter Bootstrap Font Awesome which is another service that I seem to use for every Website nowadays.

I’m sure that I’ll keep on making small change to the new design as time goes on. There are quite a few WordPress based projects that I’m working on right now (e.g. a sales, membership and affiliate hosted WordPress solution that will go live in a month or so) so will need to find somewhere on the Site to showcase these services.

As usual, just let me know if you have any comments or need some WordPress help.

Many studies have shown that the chance of people filling a form field increases dramatically when the first input field of a web form is automatically in focus. Just how do we get the cursor in a form field upon Webpage load? After all, forms are there for people to be fill.

In the past we relied upon the likes of JavaScript to add focus to a field. With HTML5 we get the very awesome autofocus attribute. All we do is add the word autofocus into the HTML of the input field for the field to have the cursor active upon Page load. The simplest means of describing autofocus is by an example.

How to use autofocus HTML5 with WordPress

POPmember offers hosted and affordable Sales and membership Websites.With the new POPmember Membership Websites (similar to OptimizePress and Wishlist Member all combined and setup and hosted), for pre-launch the team needed a landing Page and wanted to offer special deals to those that signed-up pre-launch. The simple answer was to use a landing Page with a prominent Mailchimp linked sign-up form. So far quite simple but how to make the email input field automatically in focus when a visitor loaded the Page?

With HTML5, all that needed to be done was change the email field HTML from

<div id="email-layout"><span id="emailinput">
 <input id="email" type="email" name="email" />
 </span>

to

<div id="email-layout"><span id="emailinput">
<input id="email" type="email" name="email" autofocus/>
</span>

That’s all. Initial A/B testing has shown an increase in conversions just through this simple change.

For some strange reason, by default, the StudioPress Genesis Theme (and child themes) don’t show text input into the WordPress TinyMCE editor before Posts on the Blog Page. I’m not sure why this is so but it’s very easy to include text , an image, video or contact form before the list of Posts.

Instructions to add text before Posts

Here is what needs to be done:

  1. Ensure that your Blog Page is using the Template called Blog.
  2. With an FTP client or file manager within Cpanel go to the Genesis Theme folder within your WordPress install.
  3. Open the page_blog.php file so that you may edit it (i.e. in a text editor).
  4. Above
    genesis();

    add

    add_action('genesis_loop', 'genesis_standard_loop', 8);

    . The file will now look like

    <?php
    /*
     WARNING: This file is part of the core Genesis framework. DO NOT edit
     this file under any circumstances. Please do all modifications
     in the form of a child theme.
     */

    /**
     * Template Name: Blog
     * This file handles blog post listings within a page.
     *
     * This file is a core Genesis file and should not be edited.
     *
     * The blog page loop logic is located in lib/structure/loops.php
     *
     * @category Genesis
     * @package  Templates
     * @author   StudioPress
     * @license  http://www.opensource.org/licenses/gpl-license.php GPL v2.0 (or later)
     * @link     http://www.studiopress.com/themes/genesis
     */
    add_action('genesis_loop', 'genesis_standard_loop', 8);
    genesis();
  5. Save the changes back to the server.
  6. If you’re using a StudioPress Child Theme (e.g. Agency, Metro, Corporate, Going Green etc.) then copy the newly amended page_blog.php file to your Child Theme folder on your Webshost (this will ensure that the changes don’t get overridden upon a Theme update).

That’s it. Your content added to the visual or text editor for your Blog Page will now appear before the list of Posts.

  4. Above
    genesis();

    add

    add_action('genesis_loop', 'genesis_standard_loop', 8);

    . The file will now look like

    <?php
    /*
     WARNING: This file is part of the core Genesis framework. DO NOT edit
     this file under any circumstances. Please do all modifications
     in the form of a child theme.
     */

    /**
     * Template Name: Blog
     * This file handles blog post listings within a page.
     *
     * This file is a core Genesis file and should not be edited.
     *
     * The blog page loop logic is located in lib/structure/loops.php
     *
     * @category Genesis
     * @package  Templates
     * @author   StudioPress
     * @license  http://www.opensource.org/licenses/gpl-license.php GPL v2.0 (or later)
     * @link     http://www.studiopress.com/themes/genesis
     */
    add_action('genesis_loop', 'genesis_standard_loop', 8);
    genesis();

For whatever reason you may need to Publish a WordPress Post without having that Post show in the Feed. The Post will still show on your Website however feed subscribers won’t see the Post (and any services such as Mailchimp or Aweber that use your Feed won’t ‘see’ the Blog Post).

Just add the code below to your functions.php and replace 2151, 2217, 2401 with your Post numbers/IDs:

function ge_post_exclude($where, $wp_query = NULL) {
	global $wpdb;
	if ( !$wp_query )
		global $wp_query;
	if ($wp_query->is_feed) {
		$where .= " AND $wpdb->posts.ID NOT IN (2152, 2217, 2401)";
	}
	return $where;
	}
add_filter( 'posts_where','ge_post_exclude', 1, 2 );

Please note that I’ve been using this code for awhile and attained it from somewhere but I just can’t recall where.
