While Hurricane Sandy caused significant destruction, sometimes there is interesting fallout, or a positive byproduct of the maelstrom. For example, a 90 year old schooner that shipwrecked on one of Long Island’s barrier islands has been exposed once again.
I’m sure historians will be going over this wreck carefully to learn more about the period and the vessel.

The Challenge
If you are an English native speaker then Chinese is going to be one of the hardest tongues for you to learn. It’s not like Spanish or Italian where you already know some of the words. With Chinese you won’t even know the alphabet. It is an incredibly subtle language and don’t let anyone fool you into thinking that it is going to be easy to learn. However, if you like a challenge then this is one to sink your teeth into.
The Travelling
More and more people are thinking of travelling to China these days and knowing the language is a huge help. English speakers aren’t are common in China as you might think and if you can speak the local tongue then you can travel a lot more comfortably and independently. Don’t forget that it is also spoken in many other countries too across Asia and in immigrant populations across the world.
The Career Prospects
A sound knowledge of the Chinese language is now one of the best ways of enhancing your career. So many firms now do business with Chinese suppliers or clients that many are actively looking for workers who speak the language fluently. Of course, you might decide to be really adventurous and look for work in China itself.
The Culture
The Chinese culture is one of the most ancient and fascinating on the planet. If you want to find out more about it then the key is in learning the language. It will take you a long time to unravel some of the secrets of the culture but it will be worth it.
The New Friends
One of the biggest advantages of learning any foreign language is that chance that is gives you to make new friends. This can now start as early as the learning process, as there are plenty of native Chinese speaking language teachers in North America now. For example, for your Chinese lessons Chicago offers a good variety of native teachers. The same applies across the US and Canada and the Chinese classes Vancouver residents can attend are regarded as being among the best around.

This is a very cool fan film of the GI Joe franchise, how fans probably really want the story to proceed. And the production quality is surprisingly good for a fan film! I’m subscribed to the youtube feed to keep track of new episodes because I was left with a desire for the story to keep going…that’s a good sign.
I’m going to donate to the effort to help encourage more.

I’m a firm believer in the use of meditation to help deal with the chaos of life around us, this includes the stress and ambiguity and pressure of work. The intent is to help you deal with the things that influence you in a way that prevent you from being more successful.
A handful of executive MBA programs around the country — from Harvard to Michigan’s Ross School of Business — are teaching students Buddhist meditation techniques. It’s not necessarily about teaching spirituality, but focus. There’s no way to quantify whether learning how to be centered during a stressful business meeting is balancing the bottom lines at companies. But students say slowing down does help them be more effective.

It’s available in paperback and on the Kindle, check out Red Town Lost on Amazon.
Book Description:
WHEN FRANKIE RED COMES TO TOWN…PEOPLE ARE GOING TO DIE!
It’s fall of 2012, and Dan Suppers is lost. Abandoning his broken down vehicle, he’s been walking through seemingly endless woods for hours looking for something — anything — that resembles civilization. What he finds is a smoking pit of Hell — a large building filled with what Dan soon realizes are the remnants of hundreds of human corpses.
And Dan thought he was having a bad day!
Red Town Lost chronicles the efforts of a terrified man to discover the secret of what happened the night the building burned, and in the process unraveling four harrowing tales revolving around four unforgettable individuals and their own unique trials and tribulations that are somehow connected to the burned out building. Unfortunately, the man will discover very quickly that the stories are not just connected with his morbid discovery, but in fact may hold horrifying implications for the man and his very soul!

Zombies, Run! is an ultra-immersive running game for the iPhone, iPod Touch, Android and Windows Phone. It delivers the story straight to your headphones through orders and voice recordings – and back home, you can build and grow your base with the items you’ve collected.
Zombies, Run! works anywhere and at any speed. You can jog in a park, run along a beach, or walk along a trail, even on treadmills. You automatically collect items like medicine, batteries, and ammo while running – but when you’re back home, who needs them more: the soldiers or the doctors? Which buildings need extra defenses? It’s up to you – and the bigger your base, the more missions you can play.

Earthworms creep along the ground by alternately squeezing and stretching muscles along the length of their bodies, inching forward with each wave of contractions. Snails and sea cucumbers also use this mechanism, called peristalsis, to get around, and our own gastrointestinal tracts operate by a similar action, squeezing muscles along the esophagus to push food to the stomach.
Now researchers at MIT, Harvard University and Seoul National University have engineered a soft autonomous robot that moves via peristalsis, crawling across surfaces by contracting segments of its body, much like an earthworm. The robot, made almost entirely of soft materials, is remarkably resilient: Even when stepped upon or bludgeoned with a hammer, the robot is able to inch away, unscathed.

Now this is a very handy web app that I have started using and just had to share this with you. It’s called croak.it. It allows you to record 30 seconds of audio from your PC (or some mobile phones) then share that recording via a private url hosting that audio file.
I am learning Chinese and quite often I meet online through Skype or messenger apps like QQ or MSN Messenger to speak English and Chinese. It’s a nice, sharing, relationship with my language partners in China.
However, because of the time difference it’s sometimes challenging to get together during the week. This is where a web app like croak.it can come be very useful so you can record your question, or practice the language, then share the url with your partner. They can now listen and respond with corrections for you.
I learned about croak.it from the Chinese learning site Study More Chinese.
The only downside is the length of the recording is just 30 seconds. But I still give it a big thumbs-up.
