The very idea of news looks increasingly old-fashioned.

The latest issue of Scan from Macquarie University in Sydney, go Socceroos, is all about news 2.0 and citizen journalism.

In Trish Bolton’s piece, she describes the potential of online alternatives to mainstream media. And the reoccurring issue of cross ownership dominance a la News Corps and Time Warners who push their own political agenda - Fox News anyone? The net’s potential as a democratic power tool and counter balance to cross media woes exists, yet without a political economy, we might end up with participatory advertising and more satiristas.

Political economy examines the relationship between communication systems and society focusing particularly on the influence of economic factors as well as considering issues of ownership and government policy and their impact on the production, distribution and consumption of communication.

The idea of exposing these power relationships and subsequent transparency is an amiable goal, since the expansion of Big Media on the web is progressing. Axel Springer, Europe’s media conglomerate, is investing heavily into digital media and hopes to capture even more Bild hungry viewers. So far, the most successful German blog, a watchdog of the infamous Bild newspaper has been able to attract serious readers, so that’s good news. The bad news, well, it mainly focuses on corrections, which might be a cultural issue.

Today’s news pages are “mostly, an unobstructed conduit of “news events” and official statements - both from government and opposition”. The emerging trend, he argues, of ‘sexed up’ opinion articles from “look-at-me” columnists and commentators is replacing serious journalism.

Hear hear, just recently at a conference in Berlin a blogger/journalist suggested that journalists should start branding themselves or else! New word learned today: yo, audiencehood.

Trolls, mitteilungsbedürftige Forumwüter und Spammer sind wieder da - huch, sie waren ja nie weg. Voll im Trend sind Blogs mit schicken Namen und sauberen moralischen Zielen. Zwei verschiedene Spezis dieser Sorte betreiben mehrere Blogs und unterscheiden wenig zwischen Leser und Bots.

Wer ist denn nicht gegen Rassismus und Gewalt? Und wenn man schon im Zeit Lexikon erwähnt wird ist die Glaubwürdigkeit besiegelt. Das Problem mit solchen Blogs ist, dass viele Menschen den Unterschied zwischen Spam PR Blogs und ernst zu nehmenden persönlichen oder journalistischen Blogs gar nicht erkennen, daher sind neue Qualitätsmechnismen und Bewertungen dringend nötig.

Jenni Zylka findet hier, dass die Readers Edition im Grunde genommen für schreibwütige Hobbyautoren geeignet ist,

Die AutorInnen der Readers Edition - und fast sämtlicher anderer Blogs - schreiben aus Leidenschaft, und weil sie gerne ihre Meinung über etwas loswerden möchten. Der Blog gibt ihnen die Chance, gelesen zu werden - Voraussetzungen für den Willen zur unentgeltlichen Veröffentlichung sind, so unsexy es klingt, Mitteilungsbedürfnis, Eitelkeit und ein unendliches Zeitkonto.

Dazu noch die nötige Frage an einen selbst: Willst du berühmt oder reich werden? Ich hoffe doch, dass Jenni leidenschaftlich den Artikel für die taz geschrieben hat oder bezahlt er nur die Miete und Nebenkosten? Das Argument Blogger und die Schreiber der Readers Edition, keineswegs alle Blogger, haben nur ein unsexy Mitteilungsbedürfnis und ein unendliches Zeitkonto, wow, die aktuelle Studie zu den Schreibern der Readers Edition würde ich gerne sehen, ist schlecht recherchiert.

Am Ende des Tages sollten gut recherchierte und geschriebene Inhalte, On- oder Offline wenn möglich belohnt werden, nur bleiben immer weniger Ressourcen bei den grossen Verlagen dafür übrig. Und innovative Web-Projekte, die am “bottom line” der Anderen kratzen sind natürlich eine Zielscheibe der Kritik von etablierten Verlagen. Auf anglofritz, einem unserer Blog-Titel unter der mosaicmotion Fahne, werden die Autoren für ihre Arbeit bezahlt, nach Leistung und Leidenschaft, das Format ist egal. Hut ab vor der Readers Edition: sie wird sich als ergänzende Plattform der Netzeitung etablieren und andere Verlage werden nachziehen müssen. Diskussionsstoff liefert die RE über Jenni hier.

And that is part of the larger pattern of the appeal of a new online collectivism that is nothing less than a resurgence of the idea that the collective is all-wise, that it is desirable to have influence concentrated in a bottleneck that can channel the collective with the most verity and force. This is different from representative democracy, or meritocracy. This idea has had dreadful consequences when thrust upon us from the extreme Right or the extreme Left in various historical periods. The fact that it’s now being re-introduced today by prominent technologists and futurists, people who in many cases I know and like, doesn’t make it any less dangerous.

Jaron Lanier, aka the person who coined the term Virtual Reality makes a good point in Edge about Web 2.0 and its collective beat - it can be hijacked for questionable causes. I think his article is a healthy reminder towards the loss of value that goes into the craft of an individual web creation, be it text, foto or video, especially when it wanders from wikis to blogs to aggregators. But, where would it be without them? And how would I be able to know about what bloggers write in Norway?

A desirable text is more than a collection of accurate references. It is also an expression of personality.

Eigentlich ist alles in Sack und Tüten, aber ein bisschen länger dauerts noch mit der Multi-Autoren Blog-Plattform, die wir entwickelt haben. Unser erster deutschsprachiger Blog steckt in den Startlöchern; es geht um Gedanken, Visionen und Positionen, schon mal vorab. Leider haben wir keinen Pirelli Kalender integriert und mobile "content" gibts auch nisch (noch nisch), aber dafür ganz viele Buchstaben. War eigentlich jemand schonmal auf dem Patent- und Markenamt? Zumindest ist das Ganze in Berlin relativ bürokratiefreundlich. Nur dass die Bearbeitung zur Prüfung bis zu 10 Monate dauert. Mmmm. "Warum eigentlich?" "Naja, wir müssen die Lexika abklappern, alle Register und es gibt ja viele Anfragen die wir bearbeiten müssen." Bekanntlich findet die Arbeit in München statt, ob die Nähe zu Italien Einfluss nimmt oder sind es diese bayerischen Feiertage? Keine Ahnung.

Been fishing in my thesis lately for the book project and discovered that some of this is still relevant:

These five-year old Web formats are far from a revolution in news, at least for now, but they are evolving and most news organizations have been slow to change. In some sense, they are competing with news organizations who have to re-define their purpose and provide better transparency. One can argue that they are the fifth estate, providing checks and balances on the fourth estate, a meta media. Newer professional business models will compete for Web readers and point out inaccuracies; at the same time offer their own account of the truth. For those new news organizations striving for longevity; accuracy, accountability, and exclusive content are pillars to success. Furthermore, building on both thick and thin trust will determine the seriousness of its social fabric. If these Web posters can build on thick trust beyond the digital realm and leverage thin trust at the same time, then traditional news organizations will adapt to citizen publisher news cycles.

Wow, es gab sogar Laola Wellen auf den Booten in der Spree, beim Einlaufen in den Bahnhof wurde geschrien wie im Dreierlooping. Dieser Gigant an Bahnhof ist der modernste der Welt und dazu noch der größte Kreuzungsbahnhof in Europa, sogar mit Sonntagseinkauf bis 22 Uhr. Am Bauwerk wurde nicht gespart und im Grunde genommen ist er über 170 Jahre hinfällig. Beim normalerweise üblichen "Glotzblick" einiger Mitbürger wurde diesmal ein unterschwelliger Stolz ausgetauscht. Die Lichtershow wurde mit Ode der Freude und Bilder vom Mauerfall gemixt, alles sehr unterhaltsam. Ein kurzen Klip gibts von mir auf die Ohren und Augen. Leider wurde die Euphorie heute von der Meldung des 16-jährigen Messerstechers etwas überschattet.

Zu Besuch in der Albrechtstrasse 10 in Berlin, habe ich mich mit Peter Schink, Projektleiter der Readers Edition, ein Bürgerjournalismus Projekt der Netzeitung, unterhalten. Das Ganze ist sehr spannend und ein ambitionierter Versuch die Idee einer Bürgerzeitung mit vollwertigen Artikeln in Deutschland zu etablieren. Peter hat die Seite beim Webmontag schon live vorgeführt. Ein Interview in medienrauschen gibts auch schon. Nächsten Mittwoch solls los gehen. Mach mit!

It’s crowdsourcing. Sites like flickr are chopping prices, which means those people who are centralizing pictures are reaping the profits, instead of the creators.

For the last decade or so, companies have been looking overseas, to India or China, for cheap labor. But now it doesn’t matter where the laborers are – they might be down the block, they might be in Indonesia – as long as they are connected to the network.

And these networks let people share content, but the challenge of stealing quality content without realizing it is another problem in itself. Let’s just keep throwing everything into the collective Memex, since we all want to be part of being crowdsourced.

“Even if the signal-to-noise ratio never improves – which I think it will, by the way – that’s an awful lot of good material,” Hirschorn says. “I’m confident that in the end, individual pieces will fail but the model will succeed.”

Es geht nicht um die Themen selbst, sondern um die Art, wie man es macht: leidenschaftlich und radikal subjektiv die eigene Meinung im kleinen Kreis verbreiten. Früher mit der Kultur des Fotokopierens, heute im Blog. Plötzlich merkst du aber, dass jeden Tag einige tausend Leute deine Beiträge lesen und du fängst an, das eigene Schreiben zu überdenken. Um Missverständnisse zu vermeiden. Das kann auf Kosten von Leidenschaft und Subjektivität gehen.

Einige Themen muss man sicherlich überarbeiten, damit es mehrere Leute lesen, die Gradwanderung ist schwierig und Geld verdienen sollte man ja auch. Andererseits sind Nischenblogs für Werbeträger oder Sponsoren um einiges interessanter, weil sie wissen, hey, die Leser/Nutzer sind alle Musikfans. Schwierig wirds mit der Glaubwürdigkeit meines Erachtens wenn Produktblogs 0.1% journalistische Arbeit leisten und nur das Format nutzen - ein PR Gag im Blog-Gewand quasi. Johnny ist schon lange dabei, für deutsche Verhältnisse, und vorbildlich was die journalistische Arbeit in Blogs angeht.

Tag clouds are an interesting step towards moving away from ever present top down indexes. In this newest add on, Brazilian Fernando Serboncini created a tag cloud for Google News in the States and Brasil. Interesting is the addition of relational tags, once you scroll over the keywords; the hot topics on the right are neat as well. It's nice to see new ideas in web development coming out of Brasil, a country that embraces more than just open source, but life.

Ist nicht ganz so laut gewesen in letzter Zeit, aber das ändert sich zum Glück. In den nächsten 14 Tagen gibts einen neuen mosaicmotion Blog-Titel, der erste deutschsprachige quasi und zugleich noch von einer Frau. Ausserdem gibts in der Blog-Beratung etwas Neues. Ein Multi-Autoren Blog wird die Netzwerktreffen von IT und Medienschaffenden begleiten, eine schöne Verbindung von Off- und Online; Workshop gibts auch dazu. Diese ewig langen Pipelines sind auf Dauer sowieso nicht Gesund, am Ende des Tages müssen wir alle Geld verdienen. Ein ehemaliger Professor für Self Engineering hatte immer so schön gesagt, "Wenn Du sowieso das machst wovon du überzeugt bist, kommt das Geld von alleine." Hört sich erstmal toll an, aber ein Stück Wahrheit ist dran. Achja, ein kleines Buchprojekt zum Thema Blogs und Kommunikation sollte Ende Mai fertig sein, endlich kann ich meine Thesis weiter verwursteln. Diese Hyperlinksdinger kommen noch. Und wenn ihr Lust und Launen habt, könnt ihr am 12. Mai zum mediabistro Treffen kommen, waren über 40 Leute letztes Mal am Start. Den Link gibts auch noch.

Stephen Colbert speaks at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner with remarkable factishess gutsyness. If you can't beat 'em, you try to get them on your team, since Colbert most likely votes for Democrats. It's an amazing grace of self-irony, one the States knows how to play.

Republicans in Congress are working hard at, with help from their corporate lobbyists, to install toll booths on the net that would essentially censor and “slow down” free content.

Under the “old” policy governing what’s called the “dial-up” internet, the public was guaranteed that their internet service provider (ISP) had to treat all online content in an unbiased manner. ISPs couldn’t, for example, speed up the email or websites they liked, or decide to slow down content it didn’t like (such as from a peace group).

What the big telcos essentially want is to control the broadband internet and provide preferential treatment for their programming, which means that other content would be traveling at “inner city” speed. If you’ve wondered who is behind this effort, you’ve been right all along, it’s that guy.

If you re-read Barlow’s declaration, he specifically writes about fending off the government from building guard posts. And in this recent bill effort, it’s the lobbyists pushing Republicans (and five Democrats),
