With all the celebrities at San Diego Comic-Con, you just never know who you’re going to run into there. Imagine our surprise when Samuel L. Jackson himself walked into the DMP booth and snatched-up volumes 1-2 of Vampire Hunter D and all 8 volumes of Enchanter. Sam’s got good taste, clearly. In all the excitement, we barely managed to record the event for posterity. Happy reading, Sam!

It was a long and tiring event, but writer Hideyuki Kikuchi and artist Saiko Takaki enjoyed meeting with the fans and signing autographs at Anime Expo 2008 in Los Angeles. Hope you all came out to see them. At our VHD panel, several lucky individuals walked away with keychains, signed manga, original shikishi by Takaki-sensei – even a special dinner with the artists themselves! Congratulations to all the winners, and on behalf of everyone at Digital Manga, we thank you for making our honored guests feel so welcome.

First announced at Wizard World Chicago, an agreement between Digital Manga and Devil’s Due Publishing will bring Vampire Hunter D to American comics! Current details are here from the official press release:

Devil’s Due proudly announces a publishing deal with Digital Manga Publishing that will bring original Vampire Hunter D comics to the U.S. Already a cult favorite among fans, the hugely popular international star of novels, manga, and full-length animated movies will make his monthly U.S. comic-book debut from DDP.

The first series, entitled American Wasteland, will have a noticeably North American feel never before seen in the Vampire Hunter D mythos, while closely paying respect to the history of “D.”

“Vampire Hunter D is one of those anime and manga properties that transcends many audiences,” said DDP President Josh Blaylock. “What Mr. Kikuchi has allowed us to do is to bring an American feel to the story, while at the same time delivering the D that everyone knows and loves.”

Originally created by Japanese novelist Hideyuki Kikuchi, Vampire Hunter D follows its title character in a distant post-apocalyptic future where vampires have overrun Earth. Half human and half vampire, D is a supernaturally enhanced vampire hunter forced to survive as an outcast from both humans and vampires.

More details regarding DDP’s release dates and creative team for American Wasteland will be available soon.

Finland created some awesome VHD posters of the first 2 covers of the manga that they are planning to sell. We received our copies of them today and they look awesome.

My favorite is definitely the 2nd one.

Which comes to the next thing - would fans want to buy similar posters in the US?

As the deadline for their Cold Steel Tour of Tokyo, Kamakura and Sapporo approaches, Akadot affiliate Pop Japan Travel and animation site Toon Zone have teamed up to ask, “Who Wants To Be A Vampire?”

The contest asks readers to write the story of their first night as a vampire, in 1,000 words or less, and submit them by Dec. 15, which also happens to be the last day to sign up for Cold Steel.

The grand prize is a signed “Vampire Hunter D” hardcover novel, a signed “D” manga, a copy of the Pop Japan Travel manga and a big box of other comics from Digital Manga. First runner-up received the same less the signatures, and the second runner-up receives the two “D” books and the PJT manga.

Visit the Toon Zone forums to hone your entry.

So for those of you that pre-ordered your books at Borders, it seems like you may have already gotten them.

We were happy to know from a fan that they really enjoyed the book. Here’s the review on Amazon.com. For those that haven’t picked it up yet, we’re hoping you’ll go to the bookstore and pick it up this weekend or you can just buy it at Amazon.com.

Happy Thanksgiving!
