I have Ubuntu 8.04 and I tried Kubuntu with "sudo apt-get install kubuntu". It made my system lag so I got rid of it. Now, everything is back to normal except for the screens with the gauge when you boot up and shut down. It'd the blue kubuntu one but should be the orange ubuntu one. It's not really a problem but it bugs me. Thanks for any help.

whenever I try 'sudo aptitude install [whatever]' or 'sudo apt-get install [whatever]' in Terminal, I get the message: "E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem."

Then, I run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a'. The following happens:

(A few weeks before this problem, I wanted to get a flash player for internet content, trying all sorts of things :-?). The abovementioned happens and it just never ends (It keeps reconnecting, struggling to connect to a website even though my internet connection is open)

Hi all,

I've just installed the beta for 8.04, to once more see the problems that drove me away from 7.04 & 7.10. I can't get dual screen working on it. The machine is an amd x64, using a radeon 1950 pro.

After the upgrade i got the popup stating the message about the proprietary driver, which i enabled.. reboot, do some searching to find the catalyst tool.. and discover that once again.. it doesn't work properly.

My question: is there a guide somewhere that explains how to set up a dual screen machine, for ATI, on amd x64, whith both screens in their native resolutions?

thanks in advance,
kristof

I erased by accident the Xsession file from /etc/gdm/Xsession. Now I can not run the Destop and I get the error message:
Please contact your administrator to resolve the following problem:

I have read many threads regarding how to do a 'minimal' install. But none actually give the steps taken. I have tried with the mini.iso and the 7.10 alternate ISO using cli-expert. But both get me a standard install that is around 590 - 600MB, which is about the same as if I just did a regular command line install or server install.

Is it possible to install just the very basic (no sound, no video, no GUI) using far less space (maybe more like 200MB instead of 600MB)?

Even with cli-expert mode I was never given an option of packages to install or not install and it appears to just go ahead and install many things that I do not want or need (pcmcia modules, wireless tools, sound tools, video tools, etc.).

Not sure if what i am trying to do is possible. But I would like to trim down the size considerably and do a real 'minimal' install.

Thanks!

Hi, I'm sure this has been answered, but I can't seem to find it via search - I must be using the wrong words.

I have been thinking about installing Xubuntu as well as the Ubuntu I've got installed currently, as this PC isn't the fastest machine. It's fine for most things, but I definitely like the idea of a faster desktop. :D

What I'd like to know is this: As Ubuntu likes to add new kernel updates to GRUB's menu.lst, keeping two or more Ubuntu-based distros (Linux Mint, Xubuntu, etc) updated would involve adding a lot of stuff manually to one menu.lst, correct? I know it's possible to have several distros sharing the same /boot partition, but I have been recommended against doing this here.

I have looked at the chainloader info, but it seems very technical and I don't want to mess around with anything that might screw this system up... It's my main box, not a test machine, and as much as I enjoy fixing problems (I'm weird that way), I don't like fixing them in a panic when I've got stuff that needs to be done on a broken box. :)

So is there a simpler way of doing this? Will sharing a seperate /boot partition do the trick if I stick to just Ubuntu variants? Would that still run the risk of a corrupted menu.lst? Or does it not really matter anyway?

Thanks a lot in advance! :D

I've got a fresh install of 8.04-rc, and rungetty is segfaulting.

I compiled the package locally, and the resulting binary does NOT segfault.

Anyone know why this would be? It's supposed to be the same source package, the same everything pretty much, so in theory if the package's binary segfaults, the locally-built binary should also segfault. But it runs just fine. (The reason I built it locally was to enable debugging symbols.)

I'm debating whether to open a bug to rungetty, but this seems like more of a compiler issue.

Hey -

I upgraded to the 8.04 LTS RC on Friday and since then have had a lot of trouble being able to use my PC.

So far I'm seeing the following issues:

1. The 10-key on the keyboard seems now to be intermittant. I've never had problems with this before, and it seems like the keyboard will sometimes work correctly when I first boot, but then for whatever reason the 10 key is lost... I can use the numbers above the letters on the keyboard, but this is definitely slower and a pain, not to mention that it should just work. Any thoughts? I have the US keyboard layout for a standard 105-key keyboard set as the default.

2. My PC is now locking up - A LOT! I've never had this kind of an issue with Ubuntu. Seems though that it happens mostly when Nautilus is open, but I'm not sure if that's the cause of the issue or not. Also, its unpredictable - yesterday when posting something to craigslist and going to add a picture, I I couldn't navigate through any windows for like 5 minutes, but it cleared on its own to the point where even though I couldn't use the mouse to select the pic I wanted to upload, I was able to type in the full path, hit enter and then all was fine. I couldn't select anything with the mouse in that window or any others until that point.

Today as another example though, I was playing music videos, got a phone call, hit pause in Totem and 2 minutes later the computer was locked up hard when I tried to start the video playing again. Nothing was responsive... even the number lock key on the keyboard wouldn't effect the light right above it, the mouse cursor was gone, etc. Nautilus was open on screen 1, Totem on screen 2.

3. Everytime my system goes to screen saver it either logs me out, or the computer locks up. I'll get the window to enter my password and then one of two things will happen, after I put in my password I either get nothing but two blank screens until I hard reset or my system goes back to GDM and I have to log in all over again and start my programs back up.

4. This one is kind of a nit, but even going to the screen saver, screen 1 dims before hand, screen 2 does not... not sure if this might have something to do with the problem above.

5. I've had to hit the reset button on the computer quite a bit in the last few days. When it goes to scan drives, at first I was getting a nice little message at the bottom of the standard loading Ubuntu screen saying soemthing along the lines of "Checking /mnt/sda1... etc." Now I don't even get that, I just get the 80x25 text screen and instead of the checking line getting updated, it gives me a new line for every update. I have 5 different partitions on various drives not including my swap, so this is getting pretty old. Seems like that form of updating the screen is not correct.

6. Another issue related to the drive checking... the drives are getting scanned as sda#, sdb#, sdd#. but in fstab they're showing up as hda#, hdb#, hdd#. They are IDE drives... not SATA or SCSI, so I'm not sure why this is happening either.

7. Immediately after upgrading, I had problems with the screen resolution on my nVidia card. I was getting 800x600 resolution and couldn't get anything higher. On recommendation from another forum post from someone else having a similar problem, I loaded the nVidia drivers again using EnvyNG... and they work now... sort of. I'm able to have the first screen at 1280x1024 and the second at 1024x768, but "Screen and Graphics" has disappeared from my System Preferences and Screen Resolution will not open. I just get an error saying: The X Server does not support the XRandR extension. Runtime resolution changes to the display are not available.

Here's the weird part... and it might explain it to a degree. After setting up the screens using the NVIDIA X Server Settings, my screen layout now works just like I'm using Xinerama, which I've never been able to do before. I love the way the screen layout works now as far as being able to drag windows from one screen to the other and maximize them within their own screen. I know Xinerama wasn't compatible with NVIDIA, but for whatever reason... that part at least seems to be working. I'm just wondering if its working right.

I know 8.04 was supposed to have some better multiple monitor support and I'm not sure if this kind of configuration should work under that, but in any case, I can't adjust it now from the way it is which is nice, to the way it was. I'm thinking I should be able to if this is actually supported at all now... just not sure what to do about it.

8. When I plug in my digital camera to a USB port, I get the normal "Camera Import" window saying a camera has been detected, would you like to add these pictures to your album, with the buttons Ignore and Import Photos. The camera also shows up as a drive on my desktop. However, when I hit import photos it now opens F-Spot instead of gThumb and pops up a window to pick whether to import from Camera: Mass Storage Camera at port disk:/media/dsk or Camera: Panasonic DMC-LC1 at port usb:. If I click on the "Mass Storage Camera," then I get an error that I don't have a ~/Photos folder, but it does find the pics on the camera. If I click on the Panasonic DMC-LC1, the icon for the camera disappears off my desktop and I get an error saying "Error connecting to camera" Received error "Unspecified error" while connecting to camera.

However, if I hit ignore and manually open gThumb and go to File -> Import Photos, I can still get the same import dialog window that I used to get when I hit Import Photos before in Fiesty and Gutsy, but it says "Mass Storage Camera" again like what worked in F-Spot instead of the name of my camera and now importing goes REALLY slowly.

9. Also - I noticed that it takes me 200mb of RAM just to boot up where it used to only take about 160mb. I'm not sure that I really see a lot of reason on why... kind of disappointed that this version might just be a little more bloated.

Please help! I suspect a lot of these issues might be fixed on their own by future updates, so I'm not really wanting to try to downgrade back to Gutsy (if that's even possible w/o doing a fresh install), but I also really don't want to have to do a fresh install either. I'd like to just be able to fix my problems and keep going.

Thanks,
spamking2000

I have a WinXP machine with two HDs. Ubuntu was recommended to me by a friend, as I'm looking to teach myself Linux. So, I now have an XP machine with Ubuntu on a second HD.

Since I am only just learning Ubuntu, I don't have any real understanding of anything as yet. I'd like to have Grub default to booting to my XP partition instead of the Ubuntu one. Could someone give me some simple steps to follow to accomplish this?

Thanks so much --

I burned a copy of Hardy RC amd64 onto a disc.

I inserted it into my disc drive (running Gutsy i396.)

It won't do anything.

Is this because the versions are different?

My computer is capable of the amd64 one, just to let you know.

So does this mean I have to make a fresh install?

Hi all, trying to make the switch over to linux and am only missing one thing. Dual Monitors.
I have been googling high and low and have come up with semi success.

1)Two monitors... 1 1600x1200 and 1 1280X1024
2) Radeon 9200 PRO

I am using the Radeon driver and am getting two clones. The max resolution that is being shown on the 1600x1200 monitor is 1280x1024. There is no option for dual monitor for some reason, although i do beleive i configured the xorg.conf file properly.
The most frustrating thing is I make a change to the xorg.conf file, reboot, and for some reason it reverts to the vesa generic driver with which i get a max res of 800x600 and an option to do dual monitors which doesnt work.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Code:

#
# This file was generated by failsafeDexconf, using
# values from the debconf database and some overrides to use vesa mode.
#
# You should use dexconf or another such tool for creating a "real" xorg.conf
# For example:
#  sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

How do I move items from the lower toolbar into the upper toolbar?

FF lets you move navigation buttons, address bar, and google search bar, into the menu [upper] toolbar.

Any ideas?

Dear Readers,

I have a question about automatic mount my internal HDD.
I have configured my laptop HDD in 2 partitions, one for Vista and one for my data backup.
So I installed Ubuntu 7.10 on an external 80GB HDD.
It runs really well, but hereś the catch, every time when Ubuntu starts I have to manualy mount my internal partitons, by double clicking on it en give my sudo password.
No big deal, but I would like to see that my internal drive is mounted automatic when ubuntu starts up.

I tried by a Dutch tutorial to edit my /etc/fstab file, but without success. Probably I do not understand enough of it, so hopefully someone can help me out.

Regards,

Erik.
