Recently, Open Source Matters received an unsolicited proposal for the management of http://demo.joomla.org. After consideration and consultation with the Community Oversight Committee, the OSM board the Community Oversight Committee determined that, in the interest of fairness, others should also be invited to submit proposals.
Open Source Matters is requesting proposals for the management of the Joomla!® demo site (http://demo.joomla.org). The existing Joomla!® demo site has been highly successful, with an average of 25,000 registrations monthly. OSM reasonably expects the number of registrations to increase with more prominent displays of the links to the site on the joomla.org family of websites. The joomla.org sites now receive approximately 5 million visits per month.
This is an open and competitive process. Responses to this RFP ("proposals") received after December 9, 2009 will not be considered.
To learn more about the detailed requirements, please read the complete Request for Proposals.
The Joomla! Project plans to have major multi-day conferences beginning as early as November 2010. Community members in a city or region who would like to consider hosting a major conference are encouraged to submit expressions of interest followed by formal proposals. The Request For Proposals gives instructions for putting together a proposal. The events team will work with interested groups to prepare proposals.
Up to four events will be planned in a 12 month period starting in November of 2010. There will be a maximum of one event per quarter and one per continent. The events will last 3 to 5 days. Local organizing committees will choose the theme of each conference and manage the program with the support of the events team and Open Source Matters. Community members and potential organizers are encouraged to use the events forum for discussion of ideas and proposals.
The first ever Joomla! event specifically for third party developers will be in New York City on December 5 and 6.Focused on the transition to Joomla! 1.6, the Joomla! Developer conference will feature all four development coordinators (Louis Landry, Sam Moffatt, Ian MacLennan, Mark Dexter), master Joomla! developer Andrew Eddie, Hannes Papenberg from the 1.6 release team and MooTools team member Aaron Newton.
Joomla! 1.6 is currently at alpha 2 status, so this is the time for extension and custom developers to begin working with its new features such as Access Control Lists, JForm, nested sets and other enhancements. The conference is appropriate for developers who have experience working with Joomla! as extension developers, custom developers, and in house staff. Tickets are $100.
The Joomla! Project thanks Rochen Performance Hosting, Joomla! Showroom and the Joomla! User Group New York for their sponsorship of the event, which, among other things, is supporting the attendance of six student and young non commercial developers at the conference.

Joomla! is a finalist in the "Hall of Fame" and "Best Open Source PHP CMS" Awards sponsored by Packt Publishing. We'd encourage all Joomla! fans to vote for Joomla for both awards. With the exciting news about the implementation of Access Control Lists (ACL) in Joomla 1.6 and the incredible growth of all parts of the Joomla Project, now is a time to celebrate the great successes of this community. Remember that you can also vote for best extension and best template and nominate someone who you think is a Joomla MVP. There are so many great contributors who could be nominated. Think of all those people who make the JED, JRD, Showcase, Forums, JoomlaCode and Joomla itself possible.
Thanks to everyone who nominated Joomla for the Best Open Source PHP CMS Award and for all you do to support Joomla.
The 4th Annual Open Source CMS Awards sponsored by Packt Publishing is open for nominations Joomla is eligible for Best PHP Open Source CMS and you can also nominate project contributors such as Open Source MVPs. Today we are proud to announce an important shift in the organisation and governance of the Joomla Project. This change is focused on making it easier to fulfill our mission, achieve our vision and remain true to our values.
Firstly, we are simplifying the current Working Group structure. Secondly, we are changing the leadership and management of the project in a way that provides a more open and flexible structure. Thirdly, we are shifting the governance of the project to a model that reflects the increased maturity of the organisation and provides a solid foundation for sustainable growth.
These changes will bring the organisation of the Joomla Project in line with its mission to "provide a flexible platform for digital publishing and collaboration." The vision statement for the Joomla Project describes "People publishing and collaborating in their communities and around the world" and the goal of these changes is to facilitate this within the Joomla Project as well as for communities built using Joomla software. These changes developed from discussions at the Joomla Leadership Summit held in June of 2008. At that summit the core team and the board of Open Source Matters worked to clarify the mission of the project and to develop more flexible structures to carry out the work of the project.
In response to overwhelming interest and requests from the Joomla community, the Joomla Project is pleased to announce the Joomla Resource Directory goes online today at resources.joomla.org. If you're a Joomla user, there's no easier way to find developers, service providers, and other valuable resources."We think this will be a great way to connect end-users and service providers in the Joomla Community," said Wendy Robinson of the JRD Team."Most small businesses can't afford to advertise on the Joomla.org sites and this will provide them wide exposure. With close to a million visitors and 14 million page views a month, the JED has proven that there is wide interest in products related to Joomla."
The JRD builds on the success of the JED—the most popular place to find Joomla Extensions. Both are powered by the Mosets Tree 2.1 directory extension, a GPL extension that also powers the Joomla Site Showcase.
If you're a service provider, listing in the Resource Directory is free of charge (premium listings will be offered in the future for a fee). This includes consultants, template designers, tutorial sites, and just about any other Joomla service. Users can post reviews of these services and share their experiences with the community.

The Joomla Project is excited to celebrate a remarkable benchmark in the world of open source—our 10 millionth download.
As one of the most powerful publishing platforms available, Joomla has grown exponentially since it's first release in 2005, which was downloaded just over 72,000 times from JoomlaCode. That meteoric rise in less than four years is a solid statement by the Joomla Community about how the project changes lives all over the world.
With Joomla 1.6 on the horizon, that same community is energized and excited for what the future holds. Development is underway on the next generation content management system, which will enable you, our faithful users, to achieve new heights and hopefully accomplish another 10 million downloads.
The Joomla Project announces the immediate availability of Joomla 1.5.11 [Vea]. This is a security release and users are strongly encouraged to upgrade immediately.
This release contains 26 bug fixes, two moderate-level security fixes and one low-level security fix. It has been 11 weeks since Joomla 1.5.10 was released on March 28, 2009. The Development Working Group's goal is to continue to provide regular, frequent updates to the Joomla community.

The Joomla Project is pleased to announce our latest undertaking to promote sites using Joomla—our new Joomla Community Showcase. The showcase is a hub for community users to share sites they've discovered or built themselves.
Launching today with just over 100 sites, the showcase has a wide range of categories—arts, education, business, sports, non-profits and more. It's designed in the same familiar layout as the Joomla Extensions Directory so users will be able to quickly find what they're looking for.
Submitting a Web Site
It's easy to submit a site for inclusion in the showcase. You'll need to register first on the showcase site and be sure to read the Guidelines for Submission before submitting. Make sure the site isn't already in the showcase by doing a search first. Not all sites will be accepted into the showcase so make sure your site meets the guidelines. Ideally, it's a site that shows off the power and extensibility of Joomla.
We also expect you to add site thumbnails (not logos) to your submission. If you only have one, that's fine. But if you have more, make sure they show off a variety of layouts—otherwise all your thumbnails will look identical.
Remember, it takes time to verify each site submission we receive so sites will not be automatically added immediately. Careful not to add too many of your own sites at once or you might be considered a spammer. We recommend you submit no more than 10 sites each month.
Site of the Month
Each month, we will highlight a Web site that demonstrates exemplary quality, flexibility, and design. If you want your site to be considered, make sure you fill out all the site information accurately and thoroughly.
Site Case Studies
While site descriptions are a general overview of the site and/or company, case studies are a way to delve deeper into the mechanics of the site, how it was built, what problems it solved, and how it fit into the overall strategy of the company. It's a way to give other Joomla users insight into the process and what extensions were used. We encourage site creators to write detailed case studies. If your site has a good case study, you'll exponentially increase your chances of being awarded the Site of the Month.
Tagging your Submissions
The showcase also has a built-in tagging system to more clearly identify site traits. Add as many tags as you want (up to 80 characters) but don't repeat tags or add redundant information.
Room to Grow
We feel that this site will grow rapidly so have started with a small number of basic site categories wth the expectation that they will become more refined and extensive over time, adpating to the needs of the community. So get started submitting Joomla sites now!
