"Intel Wifi Link 5300" is disabled at my Ubuntu 9.10.
How can I enable this?

Once I installed "http://intellinuxwireless.org/iwlwifi/downloads/iwlwifi-5000-ucode-8.24.2.12.tgz", which contained 'iwlwifi-5000-2.ucode' but it didn't work so that I uninstalled it.

I have moved from using Xubuntu with Xfce, to Ubuntu 9.10.

For the life of me I can't see how to reposition the window border icons, the open, close and minimise icons at the top of a window, to the left hand side of the window border, as I am used to in Xubuntu. Is there a way of doing this?

hi i got a 64 bit processor but only 2 gb ram should i keep using ubuntu 32 bit or install 64 bit version instead? i hear that 32 bit wont let u use more than 4 gb ram but i dont even have that much and they say converting videos is a lot faster using 64 bit but i dont convert any full length movies the longest video i converted is like 20 minutes
do i get any other performance increase?
is it worth installing the 64 bit version? cause ppl say it crashes sometimes and getting flashplayer to work is kinda tricky

Anybody know if it's possible to get Wine to run this game or any game like it?

It might be a stretch, I don't know.

When I start my laptop. After I put in my username & password . the follwing error comes :

error: The configuration defaults for GOME Power Manager have not been installed correctly. Booting stops after that.

It seems that my laptop power chip has failed. It works only on AC. How can I workaround this problem and continue to boot ?

After using Karmic for 5 minutes , my impression was bad.
  1. There is no working policykit gui. - A prompt appears every time when mounting a disk or shutting down.( this is what , caused a down for Vista). There can be a way to change this by editing some file , but is not good for newbies.
  1. The bluetooth is automatically turned on when booting. This is not much a problem but annoying.
  1. After frugal install , the System logs into the Live section user , even if a new user modifies auto login to point other users .
  1. The Fast User Switch Applet of GNOME panel seems inferior . Even the appearance cant be changed only the user name can be shown . The Real name display was better.
  1. No GUI to customize the ugly (for most people) GDM screen.
  1. I am using Acer Aspire 4720z. It has an orange blinking led for wlan. Doesn't worsk from a normal user account . , but when launched nautilus with gksudo , the light blinks – odd behavior

There may be lot more but,
Enough for 5 minutes.

There may be lot improvement, but , failed to impress at the first sight.

The time in KDE is 1 hour later then the system time.
I can't change the time zone when i'm logged in as normal user. When i use the commando "sudo dpkg-reconfigure tzdata" and i change the timezone, KDE (as normal user) don't change.
The commando "date" gives the correct time. But KDE not.

I have Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix. Freshly installed.

In System > Keyboard Shortcuts, I am unable to specify the 'Show the panel's main menu' shortcut as just the single 'Mod4' key. It will accept 'Mod4+Tab', for instance, but not just 'Mod4'.

So I would like to 'Add' a Custom Shortcut.
I figure that in the 'Name' field I should type 'Mod4', but in the 'Command' field, what would be the stated command for launching the panel main menu?

I have an Inspiron 6400 with Vista and Ubuntu karmic partitions.

Under Vista, I monitor and control my fan temperatures using I8KFANGUI.

I would be grateful for any advice on how to set up I8KFANGUI on Ubuntu.

INSTALLERS for LINUX YES or NOT, PETITION ?

Do you need SETUP / INSTALLERS for LINUX (as WINDOWS OR MACINTOSH WAY)?

WINDOWS OR MACINTOSH WAY:

I mean, things like this:
http://linuxgazette.net/101/sunil.html
An installer, Asking you questions, what you need to install, configure, ... install your hardware, get the drivers, and compile it for you.
Step after step, the INSTALLERS guides you, and ask you questions and configure and do the job for you: here example of dialog boxes

Or

Classic LINUX WAY:
you rather like : this like this https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenLDAPServer
step by step, with this : nano editor

What do you need, where is your dream about regarding this topic?
If you know, how to improve, how to make it feasible?

hi this kinda looks like an absolute begginer question but i cant figure out what to do and i appreciate ur help and theres a link to a funny youtube video at the end of the post so u wont have wasted ur time if u clicked this post

im using ubuntu 9.10 (the one with the koala)on my samsung q310 and i seem to have a problem with either my wirless driver or my keyboard
in vista u got to hit Fn+F9 to enable wireless theres no wireless switch anywhere else but when i do this in ubuntu nothing happens and i tried to enable wireless manually from the network icon on the pannel but i cant do that either it wont click the "wireless is disabled" text is not in bold like the others

and clicking does nothing in older versions of ubuntu it was bold and i could enable wireless using that so its either a problem with the wirless driver or the key mappings

is there any way to know if im using the right drivers or a command to enable wireless using the terminal??
editting the key combinations could work too i guess but i dont know how to do that and by the way the Fn key works for other stuff like when i hit Fn + -> it changes the volume

thank u for reading this and heres ur funny video :D

Do i get a 12vold power supply and any motherboard? or is there something else? I will not play games I will use it for playing MP3's and GPS Navigation only.

Hoping you can shed some light on the situation...

Thanks..

Is this file of any use?

I am on a fresh install of ubuntu 9.04

The following command entered from a terminal window:

lp textfile

In Ubuntu 9.04, it works fine.

In Ubuntu 9.10, it prints but in a large, boated font.

I tried using lp -o cpi=12 -o lpi=8 - which made the output a little smaller but still not right.

I also tried modifying /etc/cups/printers.conf file to make the 9.10 file more like the 9.04 file. Result - no printing at all.

The printer is an HP OfficeJet 4215, served by a Windows XP system in my home office.

Suggestions how to trouble-shoot or fix this?? Thanks!!

In the postinstall section of the deb package control file, I'm attempting to add a line to crontab, but cron must run the line as the user that is installing the package, not root. Cron is capable of this, but I cannot seem to get the package to do this.

I've tried $USER, which contains "root", and even tried $SUDO_USER (thinking it was invoked with sudo?) which still contains "root". How can I get the expected relative output of $USER within a postinstall script?

This must be run hourly, otherwise I would simply use anacron, and apparently I am unable to edit the user's own crontab, that I'm aware of anyways.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,
Can anyone please tell me what generic mean in the context of ubuntu kernels?
Why can't I retrieve the kernel sources for a "generic" ubuntu kernel?
Thanks,
Julien.

I have recently bought Fujitsu Esprimo Mobile V6555 notebook and have installed Ubuntu 9.10 on it. I have the following problems (questions) and would appreciate help.

1. I can't turn the touchpad off. It says in the manual press Fn+F6 and I have tried that but it didn't work. I have tried with System->Preferences->Mouse->TouchPad but only option there is Disable TouchPad while typing. Does anybody know how to turn it off completely?

2. I can't make my camera and microphone work under Skype. I have installed Skype 2.1.0.47 tried test call but camera and microphone are not working. I have also tried pressing Fn+F7 to turn the camera on off with out success. It seems the camera and microphone are not installed. Does anybody now how to make them work?

Since I am Linux novice I would appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks in advance.

In windows if you right click on something and drag and drop it into another folder EXPLORER gives you a option to 'copy here' or 'move here'

well i would really like this option when moving mutable files
