It's time for us to catch up to the rest of the world people. We're a major city. It's not entirely your fault. We're to blame... the deejays. We're afraid of losing you, scaring you off, sending you to competition that might play into your desires. It's like giving up control to a needy girlfriend or boyfriend. In the end you're just giving in to placate them, but the relationship doesn't grow.

I find myself envious of the relationships my friends have around me. LA and Cinespace and I<3Comix. NYC and Ruff Club. SF and Lights Down Low. DC and BLISS. DIRT in Sarasota (which proves that small towns and scenes can have the most progressive playlists around). Philly and Dave P's masterpiece Making Time.

00619 32 09 619869023 LSo, this week I'm importing Sleazemore from Lights Down Low in San Francisco to give you a peek and perspective of what is going on in other major cities. I want to show you where things are currently and where they're going.

Along with Sleazemore, will be Atlanta's own Le Castle Vania. Dylan just got back from a mini-tour of the clubs of LA, Phoenix, and San Diego. He also got a taste of what it's like to play for crowds cultivated by other deejays and is ready to fight the good fight here in Atlanta.

Here's a good sampling of Sleazemore's Top Tracks:

Goose - Bring It On - mp3
Van She - Kelly (cut copy remix) -mp3
Klaxons - Gravitys Rainbow (van she remix) - mp3
Just Ice Cream (NYPC-vs-Justice's Waters of Nazareth)
Lily Allen - LDN (Switch remix) -
mp3
Yaz - Dont Go (diplo bmore remix) -
mp3
Depeche Mode - Just Can't Get Enough -
mp3
Gossip - Standing in the way of control (Soulwax nite version) -
mp3

2 Hyped Brothers and a dog - Doo Doo Brown -
mp3
Digitalism-vs-Tears for Fears - Zdar's Shout -
mp3

MIA - XR 2
Like Whoa - Oh I Like -
mp3
The Presets - I go home I go hard - mp3

My name was brought up in a conversation in SF and a booking agent said, "Oh, Preston Craig? He's like the Dave P of Atlanta." It was really flattering, but after thinking about it, I was almost ashamed. As much as I try to push things in Atlanta, I'm not pushing nearly as hard as Dave does.

People (including myself) fall back on the crutch of "The crowds in Atlanta just aren't ready, progressive, whatever." That's fucking bullshit. People are only able to absorb and accept what they're exposed to. Just like anything new, it may be scary. It may be weird, you may not be sure of whether you like it... but that's just how progress works most of the time.

At one point last week, one of my regulars asked, "Can you play something with guitars?" I laughed and smiled all the way through the rest of my set. I had played the set I wanted to. I threw in some cheese here and there, but the front end of my set was loaded with the new era of dance music. As time goes on, the front end of my sets will expand closer to the end. I may be crazy. I may drive my night off a cliff... but damnit I'm at least going to enjoy the fall.

01167 20 71 1167901702 LMore now than ever, we gravitate around the single. I won't even throw in the tag "indie" because at this point it doesn't even really matter. For a while now, everyone has been dancing and singing along to the track "Ice Cream" by Britain's New Young Pony Club. "Ice Cream" is quite impossible to avoid, whether it's one of a number of remixes being beaten to death by DJ's or the new Intel ads that appear to be the creation of Mitsubishi's hijacked ad firm. In the end, the single's staying power and popularity ride more on the remixes than the original. In fact, after listening to five different remixes of the track, I can't even go back and listen to the original.

Even more interesting, is my favorite remix was, in fact, rejected by NYPC's label, Modular. I'm guessing Thee Bang Gang Deejays remix didn't incorporate enough of the lyrics or original aspects of the track for Modular's taste. However, the remix is still 100% bangtastic in its own right... and in my humble opinion should have taken the DJ Mehdi Remix's position on the vinyl release.

As far as vocal remixes, the Van She remix seems to be reigning supreme among DJ's with their now signature production style. As much as I'm loving Van She right now, they're going to have to start pulling out some new tricks in future remixes in order to keep audiences (and bloggers) interested.

Well, without further ado, I give you NYPC's "Ice Cream" and a nice dose remixes.

You've gotta love two girls who write and perform heart wrenching ballads like "Don't Get Too Drunk To Fuck" and "Stick It In." In fact, if only there were more girls out there like this. Unfortunately, there aren't... so I've resorted to importing the dirtiest of the dirty all the way from NYC to perform at Decatur Social Club.

That's right people... DSC is proud to welcome:

"What happens when you’re a pair of fabulously hot girls (barely old enough to drink) from the moist and pseudo-primordial land of Miami who enjoy the musical strains of rap, freestyle, 80's New Wave, and punk? Well, if you‘re Debbie D. or Daphne D., you have no choice but to morph like a magical, fantastic robot into a volatile, hilarious ghetto booty group called Avenue D. Then you must fuse these musical influences (from 2 Live Crew to Cyndi Lauper, from Jem and the Holograms to CRASS) together to produce an awesome array of songs with all the style and fun of 80’s camp, mixed with hard-hitting beats, and a little "Girls Gone Wild" thrown in for good measure. Then you go forth and shock the legions of teeming masses in NYC and beyond! It’s God’s will! "

After being slightly disappointed by The Shins' sophomore release, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the third album. However, I was immediately pulled in by Wincing the Night Away upon the first listen.

Sonically, the album is light-years beyond the first two albums, in my opinion. There are many cases where this has been a negative factor in a band's developing sound. In the cases of Iron and Wine and Death Cab, "better" the quality of production translated into a loss of soul and spirit. So much of the bands appeal to me was linked to the unique sound of their early recording environments and techniques. As they moved to more conventional and sophisticated means of recording, they started sounding more like everything else, and less unique. However, in the case of The Shins, the maturation in recording suits them well and as far as I'm concerned does nothing but accentuate all of their unique attributes.

Aside from the improvements in sound quality, the album also demonstrates a significant maturation in song writing, arrangement, and instrumentation. Wincing... is less two-dimensional than it's predecessor. It's rich with texture, changes in mood and tempo, and the addition of subtle layers of sound make for a very intriguing listen. Typically, albums I listen to frequently are very mood specific albums and all have certain times at which they're played. Wincing..., much like Broken Social Scene's You Forgot It In People, seems to fit in everywhere. It's immediately an album that you can safely go to when you have no idea what you feel like listening to.

I'm finding it quite difficult to pick two songs to post... so I'm picking the album's opener and then a deeper cut that will sound more familiar to Shins' fans.

Artists Works Art 233 Size Beryl-Cook-The-Birthday-CakeSo, I woke up today to what seemed to be perfect weather for this particular birthday. Rain falls steadily onto my courtyard. My favorite mornings are ones spent watching the rain drip off the exposed iron supports above my courtyard.

I turned 31 today. I know... I can hardly believe it myself. I've surrounded myself with music and a scene full of people under 23. At times, I've all but fooled myself into thinking I'm also one of them. Fact is, I've done school. I've had a career... two even. I've owned and sold a house. I've seen the rise and fall of the rave scene first hand and I can all but predict the timing of it's second rise. I'm not sure how many more re-inventions I have in me to keep the illusion of being so young. In the grand scheme of things, I see this as the midway point of my life.

So, if this is the midpoint... what in the hell else do I have left to do? Will 30 years be enough to finish it all? I still want to write a book, open my own bar/restaurant, go to law school, and raise children...

... oh and I want to run my own fetish porn site... sexwithyoungteenslutsinwheelchairs.com

Knightsinaction Images Medieval-Times-2005-012I guess it was sometime on Friday when I first saw it. I was on the sofa watching TV when a commercial break interrupted whatever mindless show I was staring at. I was immediately drawn in by the first commercial. The words were in FIRE... there were slow fading images of knights, horses, KIDS IN PAPER CROWNS. Could it be? Could my dreams have come true? Had Medieval Times escaped from the scenes of Cable Guy? I waited eagerly for the end of the commercial... the location... DISCOVERY MILLS?! How did I miss this? I was just there a few weeks ago. I looked over at Meagan and she already knew there was no discussing this by the look in my eyes.

Saturday couldn't come fast enough. Meagan dressed in theme... wearing a pink dress... costume jewelry. I could only hope her paper crown would match her clothes. However, I was pretty sure there would be no pink knight competing for the crown on this evening. Nevertheless, we embarked on our journey outside the perimeter (OTP). 2034 miles later we arrived at Discovery Mills. I could see the castle towers from the access road... shining like beacons. This night would truly be magical.

By the looks of the parking lot I derived two things. First, discount malls are obviously the new rage. You couldn't find a spot ANYWHERE. Second, discount malls are even more popular with "handicapped" people. I put that in quotes for a reason, because although every single handicapped spot save for one about 4 miles from the closest entrance was taken, I didn't see one other person in a wheelchair. I did see a lot of fat people though. I can all but guarantee that their chubby asses were the ones taking up my much needed van accessible spot, so that they had a few less steps between them and the food court. Fuck it! I'm about to see god damn jousting and I'm going to eat a giant turkey leg... a few challenges are worth it.

Img 2917We get to the window to order our tickets. Two tickets are exchanged for $101.00 and we stand at the castle gate waiting to get in. Upon passing through the gates, it's starts to dawn on us exactly how ridiculous this really is. There are about 1,000 OTP people milling about the "castle" in the same paper crowns that were just forced upon our heads. We also notice that the crowd is... old. There are kids here and there, but typically the crowd is comprised of 30 and up OTP people... and they're really fucking into it dude. The line at the bar is long, as people try to load up on goblets of beer and mixed drinks. I'm just fucking starving. I want to get this shit started.

Img 2924We're finally called "to the King's feast." As much as I hate it, all of the excitement and dreams of what would come end here. The first thing to ruin my buzz, beyond the scores of scary people around me, were the horses. A few of them in particular were in disturbing condition. One was chomping at his bit uncontrollably. His mouth was completely covered in froth and drool was constantly falling from his mouth. His tongue flickered around outside of his mouth. I've never seen horses look like this before... including incredibly overworked carriage horses during the summer in New Orleans. This pretty much ruined my fun. I couldn't stop focusing on these poor horses.

Then, if that wasn't unappetizing enough, dinner was served. It was quite possibly the worst meal I have ever had. I wasn't expecting anything gourmet, but I was expecting remotely edible. The garlic bread was a hard lump of oil soaked crust. The vegetable soup was obviously made from the drool of the horses. The chicken... well... I don't want to talk about this anymore. Here's a picture:

Img 2926-3

The show was OK... drawn out too far, action was predictable, and not so exciting. By the time it was over, we all but ran out the door.

Moral of the story is this: Sometimes fantasy and adventure are best experienced in the dreams that spawned them. As well as most of the excitement and adventure lies in the journey, not the destination.

I can't get back on track to save my life. As soon as I got back from New York, I got the flu. I've spent the last few days trying to fight it off, so that I don't end up i the hospital.

The good news is this: I'm back at DSC this week bitches!!! It's warm out... everyone got a good rest last week... so this week it's time to blow it out in the way only we do at DSC... and that means I better see all of your drunk asses screaming out lyrics at 4:15am.

I feel like I haven't DJ'd in ages and tonight I am bringing the thunder. I don't know what it is with the growing indie fascination with pop and remixes, but sometimes it just goes way overboard. The problem is... as much as it makes me cringe when I'm sober, after a few drinks I'm going to bang out the pop remixes one after another on the dancefloor. These two come from Digital Eargasm... the one stop shopping emporium for remixes, white labels, and so on.

01150 90 43 1150533409 LAnother track I'm dropping lately is another remix from Atlanta's very own Le Castle Vania. Most of you around here know him as DJDJ Dylan. His first major outing as a remix producer was with his dance floor destroying remix of Snowden's Black Eyes. According to Dylan, he contacted Vice about doing a remix for them... and they replied by saying, "So? Lot's of people want to remix tracks for us... what have you done?" After Dylan responded with his Snowden remix, Vice promptly sent him track exports for one of their new buzz bands 120 Days. Dylan promptly banged out 3 remixes of their single treating it with his signature production techniques.

My favorite is his Electric Rock Mix. It stays closer to the original track from what I understand. I'm just quite fond of the bassline in this version. The track feels much fuller over-all. The other mixes are good too... but of the three this one is the one I play.

164521181 LI have a feeling that Rich over at Cable and Tweed might dig this band. Jangly indie pop, and self-described as "your ass exploding, in a good way," Spitfires and Mayflowers hails from Toronto. These are good songs, no doubt, but what sets them apart for me is the looseness which so many poppish indie bands seem afraid of. Not everyone can write songs like the Shins, and it seems like many bands try to overproduce to compensate. They should go the other way and roughen it up.

Well, a new remix, anyway. I love Professor Murder, and this is a nice reworking of "Free Stress Test" off the the most excellent Professor Murder Rides the Subway done by Harkin & Wolf. Also, most of you are probably already aware of this, but Snowden will be at Smith's tonight playing their last domestic show before heading to Europe. I said it before, and I'll say it again - once the Brits get ahold of Anti-Anti, watch out.

If you're a fan of Neutral Milk Hotel (who isn't?), head over to another great Atlanta music blog, Captain's Dead, and grab a complete show from 1998.

Imagination Photos DrainedSweet mother of baby Jesus, I swear I'm not leaving town again for another few months. I just can't take it anymore. Don't get me wrong, I had an amazing time bouncing between Atlanta, Sarasota, and Charleston. However, immediately following that with five days at CMJ in NYC all but did me in. Five days CMJ time is about like 30 days in Atlanta on 8 hours of sleep.

So, I am locking myself in my loft this week aside from trips to get coffee and food... and unfortunately a last minute trip to Lenox to drop of my dead Mac Mini. This means I'll be catching up on writing... music... and movies... so, you've all got more reasons to check in here daily.

Tonight, however, I highly recommend everyone go see Snowden tonight @ Smith's Olde Bar and wish them well as this is their last Atlanta show before they embark on their UK and US tours. They won't be back until Christmas. Here is the grand list of their tour dates:

BaendikuvaI just discovered this band yesterday, and boy have I been missing out. If you like post-rock at all, do yourself the favor of a little investigation into this wonderful band from Finland. Magyar Posse is a six-piece instrumental act from Pori that includes the "normal" post-rock mixture of traditional rock instruments as well as the stringed variety and of course rampant percussion.

Since I've listened to them one day and I'd basically be summarizing their online bio, I'll keep this short and sweet. You can get more info at their website, not to mention an entire show from 2005 that sounds quite good. If you like Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Explosions in the Sky, or Sigur Ros, I can't imagine that this band will disappoint.

I'm currently on my way to NYC for CMJ and I'm formatting this post from my seat in first-class. Yes... I'm a baller like that. Actually, that's a lie... it's just easier for them to throw my crippled ass into a first-class seat. In just a minute I'm going to drain the plane's supply of Jack Daniels.

Today I'm posting a submission by one of my readers, Paul De Revere. He was nice enough to write this article which is a nice change of pace from my typically anglo-centric ramblings. Enjoy!

Images Iddpromo-ColorIntellekt, aka Dillon Maurer, is sitting in an ugly-but-spacious backstage area lit by fluorescents. This is in drastic contrast to Club Downunder's concert hall, a Florida State University-run venue where everything, and everyone, looks good. It could be because of the mood lighting, but its probably because its free to students. Also, the venue is student-run; photography allowed, not corporate, no pressure, no assholes.

It could also be because Downunder hosts a who's who of underground rock, hip hop and electronic music while still giving time to campus events like this one, a freestyle battle.

The other half of the IDDouble (Dirty Digits, aka Dan Chavez, is the DJ) is on stage cutting breaks for student break dancers from the campus' Hip-Hop Club, which Digits helped found when he transferred there before he graduated about a year ago. The crowd becomes tighter as it clears a circle for the breakers. For all the premium space they take up, the dancers are pulling their weight, keeping the room's energy up between competition rounds.

DJ Dirty Digits summons the breakers as if he were their platoon commander and they're his dancing soldiers. When he drops breaks from "Billie Jean," "Rapper's Delight" or "White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)," he springs them to action. Its like he gets a short solo set before he and Intellekt do their thing.

It may seem hard to believe, but this is just a college freestyle battle, not an actual headlining concert for Intellekt and Dirty Digits. This kind of thing just tends to happen when the IDDouble comes to town.

"I learned from a young age how to stand out," Intellekt said. He talks about his time growing up in Jacksonville, Florida, growing up as a white kid with a Filipino hip hop culture that "totally determined where [he is] today," cutting his teeth in talent shows to impress cute Filipino girls.

How this dynamic turned into a career for the two of them is pretty simple, though it took a couple of years for them to get a stage show as tight as it was at Club Downunder.

Dirty Digits is the smartass cracking wise from the back. Intellekt is the attention craver who drops his hard punch lines through rhymes. Often times, between songs, the two are at playful odds, riding each other. Their banter is so fast and witty, the closest comparison is the loquacious brotherly duo of Reverend Run and Russell Simmons. Their charisma is undeniable, and it makes you jolt upward like one of their break dancers-- it makes you take notice.

Its amazing to think that at one time (read: in the '80s, before the bling-bling, P. Diddy era of hip hop), MCs and DJs had, were almost required to have, this kind of electric chemistry.

Since the beginning of last year, Atlanta has been the IDDouble's home in residence and in music. Signed to the underground ATL hip-hop perennial Arc the Finger Records, Intellekt and Dirty Digits prove aspiring artists can go from campus favorites to some serious buzz (SPIN.com's "Band of the Day" along with plenty of features in indie hip-hop magazines and websites) in only a short time.

Most recently, Intellekt and Dirty Digits re-released "Intellektual Property," as a "revised" edition. Their Atlanta release party is Veteran's Day weekend, November 10 at the EARL. The show starts at 10 p.m. and features Arc the Finger label mates Psyche Origami.

32I posted a few of Paul Duncan's songs in February. I even named "Oil in the Fields" one of my favorite songs of 2005. Well it seems Mr. Duncan is working on a new album, and the nice people at Home Tapes sent me this wonderful mp3. Once again, his beautiful songwriting is exposed in this song. The pedal steel guitar is really what makes this exceptional for me, but Duncan's voice displays both innocence and experience that would work with even a more sparse arrangement. Definitely check out this new tune, and if you didn't before, make sure to grab "Oil in the Fields" from the previous post.

 Postmarks Postmarks-Photo
Oh man it feels so incredibly wonderful to be laying in bed right now. In fact, I'm considering staying here until I have to catch my flight to NYC tomorrow morning. I promise after this trip I'll be staying in town a good bit more. However, I'm going to make it a point to post lots of updates from CMJ.

So, as I browsed through todays recently posted music around the world of blogs... I was highly disappointed overall. I did, however, one band did catch my ear out of the group. Obscure Sound posted some original and remixed tracks from The Postmarks.

The Postmarks, coming from the land of cocaine, meat heads, and strippers (read Miami), make temperate and light lounge pop. Although they are heavily influenced by Nordic contemporaries, they blend in quite well and avoid looking like tourists. I wish they'd ditch their hometown and move a bit further north.

Now, I have to say that, although I enjoy the original of Goodbye, the remixes are an improvement. In most cases, a remix tends to use the original as an inspiration or point of reference. It usually takes pieces and uses them in a new composition. Imagine transplanting antique wood floors from an Italian villa and moving them to a contemporary loft in Atlanta. In the case of the Tahiti 80 and James Iha remixes, it's more like adding a colonnaded porch onto a house. The house is still there, but it's a bit more grand.

I'll be making it a point to try to drop in on their Nov 2 CMJ Showcase at Mo'Pitkins.

2005 1214 5530843I originally planned on hosting Zombie Attack II tonight, but as I prepared for the party I found myself incredibly bored and uninspired. How many Zombie parties can one person endure? It was at that point I stepped out onto my back porch and found a horrifying site. A giant Santa Clause was stuck in a window above my loft... trying to get inside. He fell out in a drunken state and knocked himself out on my patio. His bag fell to the ground next to him and partially opened. Inside I could see toys... but also something larger.

We rolled Santa over and found blood on his mouth... hands... pants. Inside the bag we found what can only be described as a nightmare. Among the toys, mostly dolls and bears whose eyes had been removed and were crying blood, were also the bodies of children... and the blood stained clothes of countless others of which we could not find bodies.

So, we've restrained the pedophile serial killer Santa and are putting him and his trophies on display at DSC tonight. I'm warning you... even I'm a bit creeped out by this... but that's the point of Halloween isn't it?

I'd just be a bit careful handling any of the articles of clothing you find around the venue... the blood is still wet.

Snowden8Atlanta to Charleston. Charleston to Atlanta. Atlanta to New Port Richey. NPR to Sarasota. Sarasota to Atlanta. I've been in a car or a hotel room since Friday, and let me just say... when I go to NYC next week... I swear to baby Jesus that I'm taking my bed and pillow with me.

I took some quick vacation time in Charleston over the weekend and then headed down to Florida with Snowden and Dylan (Le Castle Vania Disco) to rock the crowd @ Dirt. Becca and Maynard were amazing hosts and I can't wait to play with and for them again.

I apologize for leaving you guys hanging all week... but I had no access to internet the entire time I was gone. I'm working on some music posts for you today to make up for it.

Right now you need to know the following:

Snowden plays The Criminal Records anniversary at The Variety Playhouse. If you missed the band playing as George Bush and crew... you might get to see them in character again. If nothing else, we finally get to see Snowden on a large stage and sound system.

... aaaaannndddd ZOMBIE ATTACK II is tomorrow night. We're going to be doing all kinds of amazing things at DSC tomorrow... so don't miss it!

Art States ScI won't be at DSC tonight. I know, I know... it's hard to grasp the concept, but you're going to have an amazing time in my absence. However, Jamal, Adam Darby, and Rene will be rocking the room all night long. We will be, as usual, the place to be for all of your post show debauchery. It will be interesting to see who makes cameo appearances.

I do, however, feel bad for neglecting you all with tunes this week. I'm ready to remedy that right fucking now.

First, we've got a remix of The Presets by Digitalism. Over the past year Digitalism has won me over with distorted bassline driven mixes that leave you either riding on (or standing in front of) a freight train. Much like his remix of Tom Vek's "Nothing But Green Lights," his remix of The Presets' "Down Down Down" is a middle of the night, head down, ear-bleeding, floor burner.

Next, this is a rework of a blast from the past. DFA is putting out their second remix compilation featuring the production team's remixes of Tiga, Goldfrapp, NIN, and more. The mix I love the most is the DFA remix of Junior Senior's "Shake Your Coconuts." It's five minutes of homo-spastic disco funk... of which force you to either smile and shake a little... or run out of the room (while you're out of the room... remove the stick from your ass).
