How can you prevent and detect Content Plagiarism? Plagiarism is a serious issue in the blog world and it is a prime duty for all bloggers to prevent their content from getting copied and also take the corrective action when needed. Every blogger gets annoyed when some one copies their content and ranks higher than them in the search engines.

While it is highly unlikely to stop blog scrappers and splogs from emerging there are some simple measures that a blogger can do to tackle this effectively. As we always know prevention is better than cure and hence the first step is to take preventive steps which will make it hard for the scrappers to copy your content.

Prevent Plagiarism

1. Copyright Banners
Let everyone know that the content on your blog is copyright protected. The best way to show it is by displaying a copyright banner at a highly visible location in your blog. Adding a copyright symbol in the blog footer is also a good practice.

2. License your content
Some bloggers will not mind if their content is used partially by third parties provided they give proper credit. Creative Commons is the most common and established method to license your content. The license should clearly state the type and this will let people know how accommodating or restrictive you are with respect to your blog content. Visit the Creative Commons licenses page and choose the right one and display it in your blog home page.

3. Protect your RSS feed
A good percentage of the blog scrappers use RSS feeds to automatically copy the content and publish it elsewhere with the help of robots. One good way to let the world know that the content came from your blog is to add a copyright message to your RSS/ATOM feed. This can be automatically done with the help of the simple feed copyright wordpress plugin. The good thing about this plugin is that it will link back to your blog.

4. Provide Partial Feeds
One of the best methods to prevent feed scrapping is by providing a partial feed and making the reader to visit your blog to read the rest of the content. While this move will annoy a good number of your subscribers and even some of them might unsubscribe but it is a matter of choice.

5. Watermark your content
It is very common to find your images being stolen and a good way to prevent this is by watermarking them. This also applies to all other content like code snippets, videos etc which you publish in your blog. Picmarkr is a free online service which will allow you to add custom watermarks.

6. Prevent Image Hotlinking
Hotlinking is the act of directly linking to an image in your blog. This is not only a copyright infringement but it will also use up your bandwidth. This can be avoided by creating a .htacess file which will display an alternative image when someone links directly to non-html objects on your site. Here is a nice step-by-step guide to prevent image hotlinking with .htaccess.

7. Use the CopyRight Pro Plugin
If you are very particular about people copying content from your blog directly, the best way is to prevent selecting and right clicking. With the help of the WP- CopyRight Pro plugin you can disable text selection and right clicking on your wordpress blog.

Detect Plagiarism

Even after taking these preventive measures, scrappers will manage to copy your content in one way or the other. It is better to stay alert and detect on a regular basis to see if some one is copying your content.

8. Google Search/Alerts
The best and easy way is to use Google Search and find replicas of your content. To automate this process you can set Google alerts for some unique terms related to your blog. A major part of this task can be automated with the help of the digital finger print wordpress plugin which will set unique finger prints at the end of each post and hence makes it easy for detection.

9. Detection Services
There are some services like CopyScape which will show copied destinations that don’t come up in Google search. Unfortunately the free version of CopyScape has very limited features. An alternative option is Tynt which is a complete copy detection and attribution service. Tynt will also aid in increasing the visibility for your content and increases your traffic and search rankings with the automatic attribution link.

Plagiarism Action

Once you find that your content has been copied the next step is to take steps to remove the copied content from the web or claim copyright infringement and make money out of it.

10. Contact the blogger/webmaster
If you see that someone is using your content without your permission or without providing credit, there is a good chance that they might have used it without knowing the implications. It is better to send a courtesy mail asking them to provide a link back to the source or remove the content.

  • Look for the contact form or a contact email where you send the email.
  • Type the domain name in a who is lookup tool and it will show the name of the registrar and the contact information. Sometimes this information might be protected but you will still be able to find a contact email address.
  • Alternatively you can also contact the hosting company which hosts the site and file a report with them.

11. Send a Cease & Desist Message
Wikipedia says that “Cease and Desist (also called C & D) is an order or request to halt an activity, or else face legal action”

If the blogger or the webmaster fails to respond to the previous request the next step is to send a C & D. You can use this cease and desist template and draft your own copy with ease.

12. Ask for a compensation
Plagiarism and copyright infringement are illegal and if you are the creator of the original content you have all rights to ask for a monetary compensation. FairShare is a service which will help you to do this. You can also hire copyright infringement agents like CopyByte who will take all the monitoring on your behalf and also take the necessary legal action.

13. File a DMCA
The biggest trouble which a blog can get is to get removed from the index of the search engines. If the blogger fails to respond even after sending a formal request and a cease & desist message, you can go ahead and file a DMCA with Google and other search engines. Most of the search engines have an online form where you can formally submit a DMCA complaint by furnishing the necessary information to prove that your content has been copied.

If you are serious about your blog then it is necessary to take these preventive measures and do the right action when your content gets copied.

How to to make your PC run smoothly? Personal computers have become an inherent part of our lives and are very helpful in keeping the personal as well as business data safe and secure. To ensure that a PC continues to work fine, it is necessary to perform various maintenance activities.

There are numerous tools available in the market like computer maintenance software and tools to help you to keep your computer and data safe. This article discusses some useful tips that will help you keep your computer running smoothly.

PC maintenance tips

  1. Always protect your PC by installing some kind of antivirus and regularly keep the antivirus updated. There are numerous antivirus software available on the internet. Make sure you choose a known anti-virus after consulting a computer expert. A weak anti-virus program will do more harm than good to your computer. A high-quality anti-virus program on the other hand will protect your computer from dangerous invasive software that can wash out your important data. Here are top three free antivirus: Avast Home Edition Free Antivirus, Avira Personal Free Antivirus and AVG Antivirus Free Edition. You can choose the one you like best.
  2. Keep the firewall protection on as it will protect your PC from the unwanted interferers. If the firewall is not turned on and you are accessing the internet, then some hackers can see and access all the files on your computer and can infect your PC with viruses that can slow down your PC and can sometimes even crash it. Three free firewall products I recommend are: PC Tools Firewall Plus (totally free for Windows without limitations or time-limit), COMODO Internet Security and ZoneAlarm Free Firewall.
  3. Temp files, downloaded Internet files, and old, unused files can occupy space in your PC. Do regular disk cleanup using tools available or you can also do so manually. Regularly delete files from the Recycle Bin to remove all the unneeded files from the computer. Remove all the cookies from the PC as they are unneeded and will occupy computer’s memory and slows down its performance.
  4. You should also install a Registry Cleaner tool from the internet. It will increase the efficiency of the PC as well as make the hardware and software run smoothly. Run this regularly weekly for best results. There are a few popular free Registry Cleaners you can get online: Registry Mechanic, Registry Easy and Registry Fix. Also there are a few commercial Registry Cleaner tools I recommend: Registryrid, WiseCleaner and Registry Medic.
  5. Keep checking for spyware and adware infection by installing spyware detectors.  A high-quality Anti Virus program also helps you detect these. Spyware/Malware/Adware are very infectious and make the PC run very slow and sometimes even damage your system and invade your personal data. There are three popular free antispyware: Ad-Aware Free, Spybot Search & Destroy and Windows Defender. You can read the reviews before you download.
  6. All the software installed in your computer must be regularly updated so that they can work efficiently. Nowadays most software have auto update facility and they prompt for updating them. As soon as the internet is turned on, they will automatically search for the updates and if new updates are available they will get it.
  7. Sometimes it may happen that your computer is not infected but still it is running slow. The reason for this is the installed programs require more memory for smooth running than that is available in your PC. So the solution for this is to add more RAM.
  8. Backups help to preserve the data and important files stored within the computer. Backup creation is an easy process; you just need to copy your important data in another hard drive or pen drive/USB Sticks etc. depending on the amount of data. USB drives and sticks are convenient and portable.
  9. Make sure that you clean your PC to ensure that dust does not harm its components. CPU fan must be cleaned regularly to avoid dust and small debris which can harm your PC in many ways. CPU fan plays an important role in making the computer run faster. The computer monitor also must be cleaned. You can do so using the household glass cleaner and a soft cloth.
  10. When your PC is not in use, ensure that you turn it off. Also, don’t turn off the PC directly from the power switch till the Windows shuts down completely.

By following the PC maintenance tips discussed here, you will surely be able to make your PC run smoothly and efficiently.

Want to play pranks on your or your friends computer? In this post I will show you 3 funniest computer pranks, by my opinion. So let’s begin …

1) Warning Message

Here is one of coolest joke programs called Message Manager Lite. This program allow you to setup a message dialog for display on another user’s computer and it is great for making someone think an error has occurred on their computer. How you can use it ? For example, when you have access to friends computer, download Message Manager Lite and install it, write warning message and set the time for displaying. It looks like this :

Message-Manager

At 23:36:11 will be shown

Prank-Error

2) The Blue Screen of Death

This is probably the last thing we want to see on our screen. If you want to watch your friend freak out, download BlueScreen screensaver.  After you’ve downloaded the screensaver, take the file SysInternalsBluescreen.scr and copy it to C:\Windows … Now just apply the changes by right clicking on the Desktop/Screensaver > you’ll find the Bluescreensaver in the list

Save image from this link , apply the picture as the background.

Blue background

There are a few things we still have to do and those are to remove the icons and the taskbar from the desktop. To remove the icons right-click on the desktop and in the “Arrange Icons By” uncheck “Show Desktop Icons” option.

Arrange-Icons

To remove the taskbar, right-click it, unlock it and drag the border of the taskbar to the bottom of the screen.

3) Switch keys on keyboard

In this prank we will use SharpKeys. It is simple and small software built as a registry hack, which can easily change your keyboard keys. Just install SharpKeys and change numbers or letters on your friends PC and have a fun.

Download SharpKeys. Open SharpKey and click Add. After this will open window, with two sides, from key to key. There are list of keys that you can change, but you can type your own key, click type key.

Have you ever heard of Mediafire or Rapidshare? You may have already used them and downloaded many GBs of stuff. These websites offer something called “one-click file storage”. One-click file hosting is an internet based service that allows users to easily upload whatever they want, except copyrighted materials, from their hard drives or from another similar file hosting provider (called remote upload). This is usually free or very cheap.

These sites have many users utilising their services every day. So I thought it would be a great idea to explain these websites further for people who are curious to learn more. In this article I will explain some of the features of Mediafire and Rapidshare and compare them.

There are a few popular one-click file storage services, the market leader right now is Rapidshare. Rapidshare.com is a German one-click storage website operating from Sweden and financed by paid Premium members. They still offer a free service to non-premium users with some restrictions. A non-premium user cannot upload more than 100Mb of files. The user is then supplied with a URL where the file can be downloaded which allows anyone to download the uploader’s file.

Another popular one-click web hosting site Mediafire started up in 2006 and is located in Texas, USA. The domain Mediafire.com has received plenty of internet user’s attention in a short time because of its rather few limitations for non-premium users compared to similar service providers.

Mediafire vs. Rapidshare

Comparison of Traffic:

According to the Compete.com study, Mediafire gets 1 visitor for each 2 Rapidshare visitors. The figures are misleading though. Lets see how many links there are on the internet for each site.

Link Counts:

All the Mediafire links on the internet: 17.900.000
All the Rapidshare links on the internet: 140.000.000

According to Google search results Rapidshare has over 140 million incoming links on the internet although Mediafire only has approximately 18 million links. So why – according to Compete.com results – does Mediafire seem much more popular than the Google results suggest? As I mentioned before, Mediafire’s rather few limitations attracted many more downloaders than it would if it has the same restrictions as Rapidshare. Also, Rapidshare encourages their users to share more Rapid links with their point system.

Are you wondering why I searched “Mediafire.com/?”? Because all the download links from Mediafire.com are in the same format which starts with “Mediafire.com/?”. The same is also currently true for Rapidshare links, which start “rapidshare.com/files”. Of course, a forum/blog poster may link to the file with another name, or the same links may have been shared more than once. Also note that Google results are not constant, you might be reading this post a while after I wrote it. Ignore this for now thought because we are just making a comparison.

What is Rapidshare Point System?

Rapidshare started a service called Collector’s Zone. This Zone allows users to gain free membership and some gifts. The more your links are downloaded the more points you will gain. Users are able to gain 1 point for each successful download as long as the file is larger than 1MB and the downloader generated less then 5 points in the last hour. This system though has also caused some unusual uploading habits; Users started to make 100MB files to 120MB just to bump up their link count (from 1 to 2) and to upload files which are already available on the Rapidshare servers. Despite this Rapidshare didn’t give up their promotion system. By contrast Mediafire has no promotion system for their users and this has prevented file uploads from Mediafire fans who always use Mediafire to download their files for free.

Conclusion:

Each service provider has their own upsides and downsides. Mediafire has less restrictions for free users like allowing download accelerators (something which is very rare among similar web hosting providers). Rapidshare use collector’s zone to increase their available link count while focusing their attention improving the experience for Premium users.

If you are looking to recover your important data lost due to some system problem, a data recovery software can be the best alternative as it will never let you lose your important business or other critical e-mails due to some hardware or software problem in the system. A data recovery software is very significant as it aids one in recovering all critical data lost due to virus problems, accidental formats, sabotage, software malfunction, and directory or file deletion.

Key features to Look for in a Data Recovery Software

  • The software must be able to recover RAID, deleted e-mails, camera cards, hard drives and other storage units that you are using on your system. It must facilitate most adequate text search engine of today, implementing the easiest technique of restoring complete files including unknown, lost and deleted files.
  • The recovery software must have the capability to scrutinize entire data stored in a system and create a kind of directory tree that contains all deleted and lost files.
  • It must allow saving data to almost any Windows drives including removable media or network drives.
  • The software must have a support to NTFS encrypted and compressed files along with dynamic volume including mirrored volume, striped volume, spanned volume, simple volume and Raid five volume. It should be able to resume the result of last recuperating quickly. You can use such recuperating software as long as the drive is not physically damaged.
  • A reliable data recuperation software must also support the file systems of NTFS which is used mostly by ‘hard drives’ and FAT 12/16/32 which is commonly used by Smartmedia, Compact Flash, floppy disks, hard disks and memory stick.
  • Irrespective of the problem like corrupted or formatted drives, deleted or lost partitions, the software must ensure fast data recuperating within no time from a number of disk problems.
  • The software should be able to scan and then recover the files that are lost accidentally or deleted and have not been yet overwritten with some new data or text.
  • If you are using simple ‘Microsoft Office’ or other office based software, the recovery software must be able to recover damaged documents and deleted files that still may be present in your personal computer.

By providing numerous fantastic controls, an advanced and functional restoration software makes the overall process of recovering the important e-mails and files quite easy. The only thing you need to be careful about is to buy data recovery software after a thorough market research. Do read recovery software reviews.

From my true experience, I would like to recommend 01Recovery which offers a free Undelete File for try, Undelete Plus which offers a “limited time” freeware run and R-Undelete which offers an R-Undelete Demo mode for you to evaluate how the software recovers lost files before you pay for the license. You can try before you buy from them.

Of course, total freeware is also available and they do work but maybe much less full-functional than the commercial software. You can always try freeware to see if it meets your needs. Here are a few free data recovery products I recommend: DiskDigger, DataRecovery, Recuva and TestDisk.

Landing Pages are one of the most important part of your PPC (pay-per-click) campaign as it would be the first page which a user sees on your website after clicking your ad.  Well designed landing pages can increase your conversion rate and make your PPC campaign more effective.

The success and failure of your PPC Campaign depends completely on the success and failure of Landing pages. In this article I would be discussing few tips which you can implement to make better landing pages for your PPC Campaign.

1. Compelling Headline: – Your landing page should contain an attention grabbing headline as it is the first thing a user sees on your landing page. Your headline should speak what your users want to hear. For eg:- If your user want to lose weight, your headline could be “ how to lose 20 pounds in 1 week”. Make your headline strong and bold so that it can stand out from the rest of the page.

2. Highly Relevant Content: - Your landing page should be relevant to your ads. It should contain similar title, description and keywords you are using in your ad copy. For e.g. – If you are talking about Blue Nike Shoes in your ad copy then your landing page should also talk about Blue Nike Shoes. Create separate customized pages for each offer. The traffic you gets from PPC campaign looks for specific thing only, and if they don’t find your landing page relevant to the ad they had clicked, they would go away.

3. Unique and Useful Content: – Your landing page should contain unique and useful content. Don’t fill your landing page with tones of information because nobody has time to read it till end. Content should answer the questions of your customers and tell them about the product. Information on your landing page should be in the inverted pyramid structure. The conclusion and most important points should be at the top and less supportive information should be at the bottom.

4. Clear Call to Action Link: – The main purpose of your landing page is to encourage visitors you get from your PPC campaign to take the desired action like buying a product or giving information so that you can attain your own goal. The call to action link like “Click Here” or “Buy Now” should be above the fold i.e. it should be easily visible to the visitor without scrolling the page.

5. Use Images: – Images speak more than words. Use relevant images describing your product and offers so that your visitors can get a clear idea about the product they will get after buying.

6. Minimal Navigation: - Remove the navigational links from your landing page which can distract the user’s mind. By removing the navigational links you can control the content on your landing pages which you want your users to see. It would help you to create a suitable environment in which your user can take the decision easily.

7. Analyze Results: - Create multiple landing pages for the same offer and analyze which pages convert better as compared to others. These tests would help you to know which things work better so that you can improve them more to increase your conversion rate.

A couple of years ago, local search advertising was defined as online search advertising which is made through mapping websites, local internet yellow pages, local search engines, and classified ads websites. The purpose of conducting a local online search is to rely on information collected from online sources to execute an offline transaction.

This type of search is extremely important for small entrepreneurs and small businesses. This is simply because it is almost free as it only requires a small budget to make a successful advertising campaign. The small business only seeks customers and potential clients locally and from surrounding areas. This process is also cheaper from all other types of local advertising as newspapers and media advertising like TV and radio commercials.

Some small businesses do search engine marketing by themselves, and some outsource this operation by professional and specialized third parties. They later achieve more successful and efficient results as it is a simple process, but needs experience and knowledge of the market variables like economical conditions and customers’ trends.

Local Advertising Benefits

1. Local search advertising is based on the IP to deliver local search results. When a customer searches for a general term like “lawyer”, the search engine delivers local and non-local ads’ results, which will benefit the searcher in both cases. IP targeting search results are not perfect, but serve as required and in most times they are sufficient enough for the searchers. This is of a great advantage for advertisers like small businesses, as it will help them achieve more customers when local customers conduct online searches.

2. Local search advertising can give you the option to target customers within a specific area, like a region, a state, a city, a town, a county, or a small neighborhood. You can specify a point on the map and then target all customers from 50 or 100 miles in every direction of that point. Local search can turn up to be international advertising or exclusive to a couple of countries. The options here are unlimited as you can target more than one area with the same ad.

3. Pay per click and classified ads are the most common two methods of conducting and executing local advertising campaigns. Major search engines like Google and Yahoo are specialized in providing advertisers with hundreds of options to publish their advertising campaigns locally and globally. Craiglist is considered to be the biggest classified ads website on the web and most of the ads are for local users only.

All bloggers and web marketers know that keyword research is important for success of the blog or website. However many people new to internet marketing (even some veterans) make the mistake of assuming that process of keyword research is the same for all websites.

In this article I shall explain the different types of keyword research that can be used, the tools that may be utilized for the purpose, advantages and disadvntages of each method and how to select a method for your own website. I shall be explaining the concepts using examples from the second hand goods market as I have been working extensively on that domain for quite sometime now.

Based on my experience, keyword research is of 3 types viz
1. Finding keywords that have been popular for quite sometime
2. Finding keywords that are popular right now
3. Finding keywords that will become popular in future

1. Finding keywords that have been popular for quite sometime

This is the most popular way of doing keyword research and most of the time when people talk about keyword research, they are talking about this particular method. In this method we shall be looking for keywords that people have been using for quite sometime. Let us say, we want to figure out whether enough people are interested in second hand cars or not. We shall be using Google Adwords Keyword Tool for this purpose. We start with the keyword car. The tool will show popular keywords related to cars that are used by users. A quick glance at the result will tell us that people use keywords like “second hand cars”, “used cars” and “cars for sale” to search.

If people have been interested in these keywords for quite sometime, there is a really good chance that they will continue to be interested in them in future as well. Hence if I am planning to build a website about second hand cars, I can be fairly confident that there are enough people who are looking for it. However a quick search for “second hand cars” on google will reveal that websites that are present in the top 10 are quite strong ones and it is going to be extremely difficult for me to get into the top 10.

2. Finding keywords that are popular right now

Mostly these are keywords in the news. Result of some cricket or football match, any controversy, Oscar awards 2010 etc will fall into this category. These keywords get a lot of traffic for a short span of time which then dies down. Since the keyword did not exist till yesterday there are no existing web pages for it and the first ones to write about it can rank quite high on Google. Google Trends and Trending topics on Twitter are some of the best places to find recently popular keywords. Write them fast and write regularly and you shall be surprised by the result.

Only problem with this method is you need to keep writing regularly to keep getting traffic. And since the keyword did not exist till yesterday, it is unlikely that anyone has setup an Adsense campaign for it. So monetizing the traffic is difficult.

3. Finding keywords that will become popular in future

I think this is one of the best methods to use for anyone who is serious about building an e-business. For example there are lot less people looking for second hand bikes on Google right now. However I am confident that the number will go up in future. That is why I am working on developing a website for second hand bikes in India. The traffic will take time to buildup. But by the time it does, my website will be an authority website for this term.

The trick lies in finding keywords that are popular right now, using tools mentioned in 1 above. Then apply your knowledge to find out keywords that are going to be popular in near future. Let us say keyword research shows that browser extensions are popular for Firefox. When the discussion about Google Chrome started, using this method you could have created content about Google Chrome extensions. As soon as Chrome got released, your site would have become exceptionally popular.

To conclude …

  1. Use method 1 i.e finding already popular keywords if you have a really strong website say like QOT.
  2. Use method 2 if you have a website that is at least 1 year old with some backlinks. It is going to be really easy to rank for news items if you do on-page optimization right.
  3. The last method is my favorite one. This is how businesses were supposed to be built and this is your best chance at becoming really successful.

Let me know your views in the comments below.

US Daylight Savings Time changed today! Official Time changed across New York to San Francisco, and bloggers need to be aware and modify the time they send out their blog articles … the clock rolls back an hour for daylight savings at 2 a.m.

Daylight Saving Time

Daylight Savings Time Change

So what is Daylight Savings time? Daylight Saving Time (or summertime) helps get more light out of the day by advancing clocks by one hour during the summer. Well the Daylight saving time in most of the United States ends at 2 a.m., local time, on Sunday, November 1  (every year on first Sunday in November).

In the U.S., clocks change at 2:00 a.m. local time. In spring, clocks spring forward from 1:59 a.m. to 3:00 a.m.; in fall, clocks fall back from 1:59 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. In the U.S., each time zone switches at a different time. Read more about how the clock changes. Europe has changed time already on October 25. See the Daylight Saving Time changes across the world.

How does DST affect bloggers? US web traffic accounts for  a major source of traffic and readership for many blogs. I know several top Indian and international bloggers publish their articles (or future post it) accurately on time in early US morning to get on top of the RSS readers of US readers, which will drive more attention and better article response. Now they need to account for the Daylight Saving Time, and if majority of their readers are starting the day early, they might need to press the publish button an hour earlier!

There are dozens of keyword selection “strategies.” All you have to do is Google keyword strategies to get 50,100,000 search results the day of this writing. That is over 50 million hits on a very narrow, industry-specific subject, but it makes a good point.

Anybody – everybody – working in the web space, from site owners to W3 marketing gurus, has a theory about keyword selection. The diversity of opinions offers up another point: there is no one way to select the perfect set of keywords.

The fact is, keyword optimization is more art than science. However, by using several helpful tools you can gather empirical data, test the results for your site and tweak your keyword list to increase site traffic and, simultaneously, deliver a more highly-qualified buyer – knowledgeable, motivated to find a solution and willing to pay for that solution.

The solution you sell.

Strategy
Image via davidkjelkerud

1. Start with your own industry / business knowledge.

First, trust your instincts. What keywords would you enter into a search box? You know the insider jargon, you know your target market, you know your products or services so start with a list of the search words you’d use.

But don’t stop there. Remember, you bring a bias to the search. You already know the lingo. So, your intuitive keyword list brings with it a bias. Same with lists developed by other knowledgeable executives in your company. Even so, these keyword lists provide a foundation for finessing a keyword list over time.

2. Test your list of intuitive keywords.

I like Google’s keyword generator for a couple of reasons.

First, Google controls the largest share of the search market so why not go with the 600-lb gorilla. Second, Google’s keyword generator delivers empirical data – the actual usage figures of Google users over the past 30 days.

Enter your URL and intuitive keywords into Google’s keyword tool and click check. One of three results will be immediately evident:

- Your intuition is correct. Keywords you selected are popular search words.

- Your intuition is incorrect. Your search terms are too sector- or B2B-specific and, as a result, the search terms don’t drive much traffic.

- Or, the most likely result – the affirmation that some of your keywords are on target with SE users, some aren’t and, happily, you’ll discover additional keywords used by searchers. Happy surprises that you might not have considered.

3. Test the strength of each keyword.

If you operate in a commercial sector that crosses numerous business and industries, Google will hand you a list of a few thousand keywords used by its patrons. Narrowing the list down is a crucial part of the development of an effective list of 10-15 keywords.

There are a couple of ways I test the strength of a keyword to deliver good SERPs for my client. First, I use a term extractor, available for use (free) on SEOmoz.org. This tool identifies strong keywords on an existing site that’s been indexed properly by search engines. A quick examination of the results of term extraction always reveals some interesting data.

Example: I had a client that provides hearing aid advice online. The site offered a free consumer download, articles, product reviews and other helpful information for people conducting research on an upcoming hearing aid purchase.

The site owner, intuitively, selected hearing aids as his primary keyword but couldn’t understand why his bounce rate was over 80%. Well, hearing aids, when extracted, proved to be a strong keyword. The problem was, the site didn’t sell hearing aids – the objective of a SE user querying “hearing aids.” No hearing aids for sale? Bounce to the next site.

A simple adjustment to this client’s keyword list in the site’s meta, alt and title tags and playing down the keyword hearing aids in the site’s corpus did the trick. The client’s bounce rate dropped to 40% in a matter of weeks.

Use a term extraction tool to identify which keywords and phrases are strong with search engines. You’re almost certain to be surprised at the results.

4. Calculate the “pull” of a given keyword.

I use SpyFu, a very useful tool in determining the effectiveness of any keyword.

The software is actually an AdWords metrics tool that identifies bidding ranges of given keywords for AdWords placement. Of course, I use SpyFu to help my clients get a bigger bang for their AdWords buck, but it’s also a great tool for determining the effectiveness of a keyword – even if you don’t use PPC advertising.

AdWords functions much like a stock market with investors bidding up the price of keywords, just as investors bid up the price of stocks. SpyFu shows me the range of bids for a keyword. And if AdWords users keep that keyword at $1.27 a click, well, I know that’s a keyword that pulls and more than pays for itself at $1.27 per click.

Conversely, when SpyFu identifies a low cost AdWords keyword – six cents per click (see chart), for instance, I know it’s not popular, I know it doesn’t pull but I don’t necessarily cross it off the list. Here’s why.

5. Use lower-ranking keywords to beat higher ranking competition.

If you’re just launching a new site, if you’ve just added several sub-domains that don’t show up on SERPs, or if you’ve made significant changes to your business or revenue model, you can often upend deep pockets competitors by using lower-ranking keywords.

Let’s say you own a small site that sells digital cameras and accessories. You’re in a highly-competitive market sector up against the likes of Amazon, Best Buy, J&R and other well-known, branded names. So, a search of “digital cameras” reveals that your little site is on page 34 of SERPs, and when was the last time you drilled down 34 pages searching for anything?

Using the identical keywords that deep-pockets, well-known competitors use will bury you. BUT, if you deploy lesser-used keywords, for example “digital cameras real cheap,” you won’t see as many SE users entering those particular keywords, but those who do will see your site at the top of page one of Google’s SERPs. Why? Because the heavy hitters aren’t using those long-tail keywords. Once again, before you opt for a long-tail, test it on all major search engines: Google, Yahoo!, Bing and Inktomi.

Also, run that long-tail through an AdWords metrics generator. This will enable you to uncover strong terms that aren’t being used, even by stronger sites. Look for keywords that haven’t been bid up in price but still pull a good quantity of traffic each day. This eliminates the stronger competitors.

keywords-list

Check out the spread sheet showing keywords and prices for digital cameras. I’ve highlighted popular search terms that haven’t been “discovered” by the competition because the AdWords bid price is comparatively low. Consider :

1. Using these less popular keywords as your primary search terms or

2. Add the most promising candidates to your existing list and incorporate them in your site’s meta data, description tag, alt tags and title tags where appropriate.

One last piece of advice: keyword list refinement is an ongoing process. It’s not something you do once and forget about it. Use tools like Google’s keyword generator, SpyFu and other AdWords metrics analyzers to determine the best list for your site – a list of keywords that pulls, but also isn’t used by more powerful competitors.

Then, as your business grows, you can add more of the most-used keywords and go head-to-head with the cost-cutting big box stores. That day will come a lot sooner if you select the strongest keywords for your site.

In this article I’m going to explain the steps involved to transfer domain name from one registrar to another. If you have couple of domain names, it is better to keep all of them in a single registrar. Below mentioned steps are common and can be applied to all the top domain registrars.

1. Purchase Domain Transfer At The Your New Registrar
Normally if you purchase a domain transfer, your new registrar will let you to keep all the time remaining on your existing registration and provide One-Year free extension. After the purchase of domain transfer, your domain at the new registrar will require an Authorization Code. Your new registrar will send an email to you which contains “Transaction ID” and “Security Code”.

2. Request Authorization Code At Current Registrar
Login to your current registrar account and request for Authorization Code. But remember you should have turned off the domain protection or your domain should be unlocked before requesting the authorization code from the current registrar.

3. Authorization Code Received From Current Registrar
You will receive an email from current registrar with “Authorization Code”. Now you can begin the domain transfer from the new registrar using the authorization code. Login to your new registrar and begin the transfer process. Then the new registrar will display the status as “Authorization Required” and choose “ Begin Transfer Authorization”(Recommended).

Now enter the authorization code that you received from the current registrar through mail and complete the process. After completing this step, the status will be displayed as “Pending Current Registrar approval” and choose “Accept transfer at current registrar” (Recommended).

4. Email Notification From Current Registrar
After completing all these steps, you will receive an email from your current registrar confirming your transfer request. You don’t need to take any action if you want to accept the transfer. If you wish to cancel the transfer, follow the link provided in the email.

You will receive an email like this :

We received notification on November 5, 2008 5:11:27 PM EDT that you have requested to transfer to another domain name registrar. If you would like to proceed with this transfer you do not need to respond to this message…..

…..If we do not hear from you by November 10, 2008 5:11:27 PM EDT, this transfer will proceed.  We are committed to providing you with the solutions, services, and support to help you succeed online. We hope to continue serving you in the future.

5. Domain Transfer Completed To New Registrar
You will get a confirmation email from your new registrar received approximately four days after initiating the transfer at the current registrar. Remember that the current registrar has up to 5 days to release the transfer of the domain.

Have you ever transferred a domain name to a new registrar? If so, please share your experience here.
