Song: Dreams
Artist: Faye Wong (王菲)
Album: Chungking Express [soundtrack]
Genre: Rock, Cover
Language: Cantonese
Released: 2004 (released)
Official Site
Comments: Faye Wong's this super awesome C-Pop singer. This song is from the soundtrack to the 1994 movie "Chong qing sen lin", better known in English-speaking countries as "Chungking Express". She was also one of the leads (opposite Tony Leung <3) and was so cute in it. I totally recommend it times one million. But anyway, this is her cover of the Cranberries song "Dreams". The lyrics have been changed to Cantonese and it's so pretty! The instrumentation is nearly identical to the Cranberries version, but her sweet voice makes it so beautiful. Maybe even better than the original...

Song: Dreams
Artist: The Cranberries
Album: Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?
Genre: Rock
Language: English
Released: 1993
Official Site
Comments: The Cranberries is an Irish rock band that had a couple big hits in the mid-90's (my personal favourite is "Zombie"). This song is from their 1993 debut album. The lead vocals (supplied by Dolores O'Riordan) are nearly as sweet as Faye Wong's, but they are a bit more gritty. One of my favourite 90's alt-rock hits (I grew up on this stuff!).

Song: Yer Blues
Artist: Shiina Ringo (椎名林檎)
Album: Utaite Myouri (唄ひ手冥利-其ノ壱)
Genre: Rock, Cover
Language: English
Released: 2002
Official Site
Comments: This is from Shiina Ringo's cover double album. This song is a cover from the infamous Beatles' White Album. It's a brilliant cover because she totally makes it hers. She throws together all sorts of sounds into a cacophony of drums, guitars and everything, making a distinctly Shiina Ringo recording. Her voice is crazy gritty too. Such a great song.

Song: Yer Blues
Artist: The Beatles
Album: The Beatles (White Album)
Genre: Rock
Language: English
Released: 1968
Official Site
Comments: Anyone who doesn't know who the Beatles are should come on out of the cave... Even though they broke up over 30 years ago and half of them are now dead, they still have had such an immense impact on virtually anything musical. Seriously. I took a class on the subject. But anyway, Lennon's vocals are brilliant... and screamy. So bloody passionate. The music itself is just your basic blues progression... with a whole lot of rock-and-roll mixed in. Definitely a throw-back to early Rock by Chuck Berry or something. Totally awesome.

Song: Gloomy Sunday
Artist: Jaurim (자우림)
Album: The Youth Admiration (靑春禮讚)
Genre: Rock, Cover
Language: English
Released: 2005
Official Site
Comments: This song is from the Jaurim cover album that came out about a week ago (I work fast when it comes to Jaurim!). It's a cover of an Hungarian song (Szomorú Vasárnap) that countless people have sung (Billie Holliday, Sarah McLaughlin, Sarah Brightman, Sinéad O'Connor, Bjork... etc etc etc). It was written in the 1930's by Rezsô Seress (English lyrics are by Sam M Lewis) and has been come to be known as the "Hungarian Suicide Song" because it has been linked to dozens of suicides. It was even banned in Hungary! With good reason too... this may be the saddest song I have ever heard. Jaurim's rendition of it is absolutely brilliant and totally captures the utter despair and melancholy. The way the guitars or the orchestra mixes with Kim Yoon-Ah's voice is absolutely flawless.

Song: Gloomy Sunday
Artist: Billie Holliday
Album: Lady Day: The Best of Billie Holiday
Genre: Jazz, Cover
Language: English
Released: 1941
Official Site
Comments: This is the version of Gloomy Sunday that made it a world-wide hit. Before this, its success was limited to Hungary. Sung by the infamous Billie Holliday, she conveys this incredibly sad theme in a powerful way. The instrumentation is only a small lounge band with brass and a piano, which is interesting to note the contrast between the two songs. One is like a requiem with guitars and violins while the other is like a funeral dirge. Brilliant song.

Song: Hito natsu no Keiken (ひと夏の経験)
Artist: Momoe Yamaguchi (山口百恵)
Album: 15sai no THEME Hito natsu no Keiken (15才のテーマ ひと夏の経験)
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 1974
Official Site
Comments: Momoe's 5th single and one of her classics. It was the one that made her REALLY popular and also the first one I was obsessed with. It has some rathar suggestive lyrics for 14 year old Momoe to be singing, but it's a great song. A subdued song which compliment Momoe's vocals wonderfully. Highly reccomended.
(also, this is actually from the best of album, because the album track has talking at the begining. But I like this picture better. Hehe.)

Song: Hito natsu no Keiken (ひと夏の経験)
Artist: GO!GO!7188
Album: Tora no Ana
Genre: Rock
Language: Japanese
Released: 2002
Official Site
Comments: GO!GO!7188 is a 3-person rock group with Yuu (vocals+guitar), Akko (vocals+bass) and Turkey (drums). This is off their cover album which came out in 2002. This is also one of the only songs with Akko as the lead singer. They made one of my favorite songs completely rock, and a totally different song in some aspects. I love the backing guitar in the verses here.

Song: Shuuchakueki (終着駅)
Artist: Chiyo Okumura (奥村チヨ)
Album: Golden Best
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 1971
Official Site
Comments: Chiyo Okumura is a popular late '60s singer, who became big with "Koi no Dorei". Yay, I love Chiyo! This is one of her more subdued songs, but very pretty. Her voice goes perfectly with the instrumentation. I love how she's able to go from subdued to strong with the same voice.

Song: Shuuchakueki (終着駅)
Artist: Hibari Misora (美空ひばり)
Album: Box: Kizuna (絆)
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 1976
Official Site
Comments: Hibari Misora is a HUGE singer in Japanese pop history. She debuted in 1949 at the age of 12. Her carrer spanned from her debut to 1989, when she died.
I was looking over the "Kizuna" listing and recognized the kanji to this song, and I found out that she covered Chiyo. Which came as such a suprise to me. I like Chiyo's version better, but Misora's voice gives it a very different style, which I still enjoy.

Song: Furimukunai de (ふりむくないで)
Artist: The Peanuts ( ザ・ピ-ナッツ)
Album: The Peanuts: Best of
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 1962
Official Site
Comments: The Peanuts are an identical twin duo who debuted in 1959 with "Kawaii Hana". They are extremely popular artists and icons in Japanese Pop history. This is one of their most popular songs, with a very '60s sound. It's a very upbeat and happy song, I highly reccomend it.

Song: Furimukunai de (ふりむくないで)
Artist: Wink
Album: Wink Memories 1988-1996
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 1992
Official Site
Comments: Wink is a popular duo who debuted in 1988 with the single "Sugar Baby Love". They hit it big with their third single and had steady popularity until 1996 when they disbanded.
This was their 15th single and a cover of the Peanuts song above. Keeping the same bouncy flow of the song, but updating it with a very late-'80s early-'90s sound, fitting Wink's voices better than if had kepted the original sound, IMO.

Song: Tango Noir
Artist: Akina Nakamori (中森明菜)
Album: Singles 27 1982-1991
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 1987
Official Site
Comments: Akina Nakamori was one of the heavy-weights in Jpop during the '80s. Every single of hers reached the first spot, and many as considered classics today.
This was her 18th single and still quite popular today. A very '80s sounding, slower paced song. The slow distinct beats mixed with Akina deep, beautiful voice make it a song which'll get stuck in your head. While not my favorite Akina song, it certianly shows how great a typical single of hers sounds.

Song: Tango Noir
Artist: Nana Katase (片瀬那奈)
Album: Extended
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 2004
Official Site
Comments: Nana Katase was a gravure idol before she was picked up by Avex. She got mild success with her singles "GALAXY" and "TELEPATHY". In 2004 she released a cover album "Extended", covering various 80s songs, including this song. All of the songs have a very techno sound added to them, while using the regular '80s sounding beats, making for a very interesting mix. This is probably my favorite song I've heard off the album, I love how the slower pace of the song works with her voice and the new sound.

Song: Nebomopeoblaka (Небомореоблака)
Artist: Zemfira (Земфира)
Album: Вендетта (Vendetta)
Genre: Rock
Language: Russian
Released: 2005
Official Site
Comments: Zemfira is pretty popular Russian rock singer. Her songs are generally pretty heavy and her voice is raspy. This one is the first song on her most recent album. It starts out with very blunt, heavy, deliberate beats and then she comes in with forceful vocals for the verse... but then it goes into the chorus when her voice gets sweet until it re-approaches the verse when she goes back into the heavier sounding voice. It's pretty cool. Check it out.

Song: Kao Dao Tu Mi
Artist: Faye Wong
Album: Zhi Ai Mo Sheng Ren
Genre: Pop
Language: Mandarin
Released: 1999
Official Site
Comments: Faye Wong is freaking awesome. She used to be a Canto-Pop artist in the early 90's, but has since changed her style and her language - to Mandarin. As far as this song goes, it's interesting with the strings and the general mess and confusion of instruments in the background. Her voice is distorted and sounds beautiful during the chorus. Check it out and experience the awesomeness of Faye Wong

Song: Calntsye (Солнце)
Artist: Nochnyi Snaipery (Ночные Снайперы)
Album: Detskii Lyepyet(Детский лепет)
Genre: Rock
Language: Russian
Released: 2002
Official Site
Comments: Nochnyi Snaipery was originally this Russian rock duo made up of Diana Arbyenina (vocals) and Svetlana Surganova (violin). Since then, the band's added members and the violinist Surganova has left the band. But this song is from their second album, so she's still around. I bought a post-Svetlana live album and really liked it... enough to find the older albums. And the songs are made so much better with the violins. This song is beautiful and sweeping. The singer actually reminds me a lot of Zemfira, but the style of the music is completely different due to the instrumentation. Pretty cool.

Song: Veter i Noch (Ветер и ночь)
Artist: Nochniye Snaipery (Ночные Снайперы)
Album: Dyetskii Lyepyet (Детский лепет)
Genre: Rock
Language: Russian
Released: 2002
Official Site
Comments: This song is more upbeat than the previous one. The violin and the sweet vocals over the continuously repeating guitar riff is really beautiful. It's sorta repetitive, but I especially like when the singer goes into her lower register during the chorus. It has sort of a folky flavour. Very pretty.

Artist: Okean Elzy (Океан Ельзи)
Album: Yananebibuv (Янанебiбув)
Genre: Rock
Language: Ukrainian
Released: 2000
Official Site
Comments: Okean Elzy is a Ukrainian band who debuted in 2000 with this album. There are currently 5 members, though this album was created with just 4 members.
I just picked up this album at a local Russian store, so please forgive my lack of knowledge on the band. This is the second song on the album, and I'm currently obsessed with it. I love the vocalist's raw vocals, and I love the sound of the song. It reminds me partially of a THE BACK HORN and LUNA SEA mix, so if you either of those bands, be sure to pick this up.

Song: Dreaming I was Dreaming
Artist: Namie Amuro
Album: 181920
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 1998
Official Site
Comments: Namie debuted in 1992 with the SUPER MONKEYS. In 1995 she hit it big with "TRY ME ~Watashi wo shinjite~". She was picked up by super producer Tetsuya Komuro. She became a pop sensation through 1995 until 1998, when she released this best of album and went on ayear break to have her son, Haruto. Though her immense popularity waned, she has gotten popular with her recent album ("Queen of Hip-Pop") and singles.
This was a single that was released just before her haitus, and is only available on single and this best of album. At first I wasn't that fond of this song, but after watching the PV and a live peformance of it at the time, I fell in love with it. It's a very slow paced R&B; infused song. It's one of my favorite Namie songs ever, and I highly reccomend it.

Song: Hum To Bhai Jaise Hain
Artist: Lata Mangeshkar
Album: Veer-Zaara
Genre: Soundtrack
Language: Hindi
Released: 2004
Official Site
Comments: Veer-Zaara is a Hindi film that came out late last year to much acclaim. The soundtrack was specially made of songs composed by popular old bollywood composer Madan Mohan.
While I'm not as awed at this soundtrack as "Devdas", it's got some very pretty songs on it. This is one of them. This song strays from the general sound of the film of epic songs with duets, in that this is sung only by female single Lata Mangeshkar, and it's got a bit of a bounce to it. It's a nice song to listen to.

Song: Panda
Artist: Dungen
Album: Ta Det Lugnt
Genre: Rock
Language: Swedish
Released: 2004
Official Site
Comments: I got this CD for my birthday from my good friend Gloria. She works for a local music store and she said that this album has been popular lately. And since it's Swedish, she got it for me... because Sweden is awesome. This song starts out with a lot of weird drum beats and dissonance. The song doesn't seem like it's going to get together anytime soon... and the suddenly the dissonance ends abruptly and it goes into this absolutely adorable melody. I can't explain it. Just listen. It eventually gets a bit heavier and the last minute or so is more dissonance. I really like this song. Have a listen!

Song: Connected
Artist: Ayumi Hamasaki (浜崎あゆみ)
Album: I am...
Genre: Pop, Dance
Language: Japanese
Released: 2002
Official Site
Comments: Ayumi Hamasaki (in case you don't know) is a crazy popular Japanese pop star. She's been around since 1999 and brought out her sixth album at the end of last year. In addition to 6 albums, she's had a mini album, a bazillion remix albums, best of albums... I am... is her fourth album and it has some goodies on it (but it's not her best). I really like Connected... mostly for the bass line and synthisizer. It reminds me a bit of early-90's dance music, which I basically grew up on. Other than that, it's a bit repetitive, but it's danceable. It's especially fun if you turn the bass on high and crank this tune in the car. The mirrors shake like crazy! ^.^

Song: Gourmandises
Artist: Alizée
Album: Gourmandises
Genre: Pop
Language: French
Released: 2000
Official Site
Comments: Alizée is a French pop princess who had a bunch of big hits. When I visited France, the tour guide turned up some French tunes and the first one was another song from this album, Moi... Lolita. Since then, I've been an Alizée fan. Seriously. This song is the title track from her first of two albums and it's really brilliant. It starts out with this piano riff that plays throughout the song and slowly adds percussion and synth, then vocals and bass. And it continues like that for nearly the rest of the song. It's a simple song with a great beat and fun vocals. In my opinion, it's the best song on the album.

Song: 2 + 2 = 5 [Live]
Artist: Radiohead
Album: Com Lag: 2+2=5
Genre: Rock
Language: English
Released: 2004
Official Site
Comments: Radiohead is awesome. They've been around since 1993 and have since recorded six albums, as well as countless singles and a couple live albums. This album is their most recent live album that was made exclusively for Japan. In fact, I believe that the package said "For sale in Japan only"... nevertheless I bought it for an exorbidant price in New York City. This recording is Live at Earl's Court in London and it's brilliant. The song is from their most recent album Hail to the Thief, but I never really paid much attention to the particular song until I heard the live. The energy that the band exudes with a live performance just makes the song so much better and infinitely more powerful. Yorke's vocals are absolutely beautiful and the way the music fits together is nothing short of genius. Yea. Radiohead is awesome.

Song: Re Te (레테)
Artist: Jaurim (자우림)
Album: 2.5 (B 定規作業)
Genre: Rock
Language: Korean
Released: 1999
Official Site
Comments: Jaurim is a kick ass Korean rock band. This song is from their B-sides and remixes album. It's a very beautiful, very mellow song. Most of the song is just Kim Yoon Ah's voice accompanied with a guitar - very simple. There is some light percussion and synth that shows up every once in a while and it isn't until the chorus when they bring in the bass, lead guitar and any kind of heavy drums. And even then, it's not that heavy. It's a very sweet and pretty song. Check it out if you've liked the other Jaurim songs that I've been so keen to post.

Song: traveling
Artist: Hikaru Utada (宇多田ヒカル)
Album: Deep River
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 2002
Official Site
Comments: Hikaru Utada was at one time the most popular singer in Japan, but she's had a demi-hiatus in the past couple years. But it's not really a hiatus... she just hasn't put out a Japanese album aside from a Best Of album. She tried to find a market in the US last year with her album Exodus, which basically floundered. Anyway. Traveling is freaking awesome. It's got an awesome beat and I've found myself dancing like a maniac while listening to it... all while I'm driving. No wonder people look at me strangely... It also has an absolutely fabulous video (directed by her husband - the director of the movie Casshern!). Hopefully, I'll be able to upload the video in a future rotation because the file's a bit... lost. But yea. Great song. Check it out. And if you stumble on the video, check that one out too! ^.^

Song: Rinne (輪廻)
Artist: Momoe Yamaguchi (山口百恵)
Album: This is my trial
Genre: Pop/Rock
Language: Japanese
Released: 1980
Official Site
Comments: Momoe is a very popular '70s soloist, and one of my favorite artists ever. Check here and various other posts for more background.
This is one of the first albums I pick up from her. It is her very last album to be brought out before she left the music business.
This is the first track off the album, and has been a favorite of mine since I first listened to it. A slow paces yet catchy song with an addictive beat. It really showcases how deep Momoe's voice was near the end of her carrer. I can't think of any other adjective to descrive this song other than completely sexy. I love this song and I love Momoe. I highly reccomend this song to everyone.

Song: Jusui Negai (入水願い)
Artist: Tokyo Jihen (東京事変)
Album: Kyokiku (教育)
Genre: Rock
Language: Japanese
Released: 2004
Official Site
Comments: Tokyo Jihen is the band formed by Shiina Ringo and her band for the "Electric Mole" live tour. They recently lost guitarist Mikio Hirama and pianist Masayuki Hiizumi.
I love and adore Shiina Ringo, and it's only natural for me to love Tokyo Jihen. This is probably my favorite song on their first album "Kyokiku". It's the third track and really shows the talents of all members of the band. It's a fusion rock song (like most of Shiina Ringo/Tokyo Jihen's music) with bits of jazz mixed in. And a great mix of all vocals/guitar/bass/drums/piano, and quite a catchy song to top it off.

Song: alone in my room
Artist: Ami Suzuki (鈴木あみ)
Album: Fun for Fan
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 1998
Official Site
Comments: Ami Suzuki debuted in 1997 on Sony being produced by Tetsuya Komuro. Became a very big artist and put out hits like "BE TOGETHER" and "all night long". She then sued Sony for mismanagement, and won. However she was then blacklisted, and was out of the music indrustry for 3 years. In early 2004 she then started releasing music independently and after her 2nd independent single peaked at 20 on the Oricon she for a record contract with big label Avex. She'll be releasing a new album, "AROUND THE WORLD", on October 5th.
Ami Suzuki, also known as Amigo, is one of my favorite artists. And "alone in my room" is quite possibly my favorite Amigo song. Though the opening often confuses me with Namie Amuro's very dancey "You're my sunshine", (another of my favorite songs) it soon shanges into a totally different kind of song. A very laid back and happy sound song, Ami's vocals give it a very unique sound. I highly reccomend this song.

Song: IMITATION
Artist: LUNA SEA
Album: IMAGE
Genre: Rock
Language: Japanese
Released: 1992
Official Site
Comments: LUNA SEA is a band made up of Ryuichi, Sugizo, J, Inoran, and Shinya. They debuted in 1989 with their indie album "LUNA SEA", under the X. They then got picked up by RCA and released 6 albums under them under them before disbanding in 2000.
This is from their 2nd original album, first major record album, and my favorite by them "IMAGE". This is also my favorite song by them. It's very much like the entire album soundwise, but quite a different song. It has such a lovely beat and awesome background guitar. And Ryuichi's vocals are not quite as refined as they are in their later songs, and that makes it completely perfect for this sound. It's just an awesome song which I completely love. So get it and love it too!

Song: Mannatsu no Tremolo (真夏のトレモロ)
Artist: Wink
Album: Memories 88-96
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 1996 (original in 1991)
Official Site
Comments: I haven't posted a Wink song since the very first update! I think I'm quite due.
Wink is a popular duo who deuted in 1988 with the single "Sugar Baby Love". Though it wasn't until their 3rd single, and a Kylie Minogue cover "Ai ga Tomaranai -Turn It Into Love-" that they really gained popularity. They conuinued with hits like "Samishii Nettaigyou" and "Sakihokore Itoshisayo" until 1996 when they disbanded.
This is one of my favorite Wink songs. A great loud and fast dance song that reeks of early 90s pop sounds. Mixed with Sachiko and Aida's light vocals, it's really a fun song to sing to.

Genre: Rock
Language: English
Released: 1965

Comments: Bob Dylan is one of the most influential artists in music history. And he's awesome. That's all you really need to know. Hehe.
However much criticism Dylan gets for his vocals, I can never seem to have the same views. And this song is one of the songs that really prove how much his vocals match. His vocals here are very bitter sounding, and it does nothing but match and compliment the overall sound of the song. This is one of my favorite Dylan songs, interesting/random lyrics and all.

Song: Lint of Love
Artist: Cibo Matto
Album: Stereo Type A
Genre: Rock
Language: English
Released: 1999
Official Site
Comments: Cibo Matto is a Japanese-born duo (Miho Hatori and Yuka Honda) that formed in New York city. It's sort of like Shonen Knife in that they have had decent success in the US. Also, their lyrics are silly... like Shonen Knife. But their music is completely different - instead of a type of surf rock silliness, Cibo Matto is heavy on the funk and jazz, which is really awesome. This song is probably one of the more famous ones (I say this because I heard it at the mall... that's nuts) and I like it a lot. It flows well and has a great, mellow beat.

Song: Mang Hyang (망향)
Artist: Jaurim (자우림)
Album: 4
Genre: Rock

Comments: This song is insanely gorgeous. I find this song to be a bit more goth than most Jaurim songs I've listened to... but that could be from watching the video (can be found at http://music.bugs.co.uk). Kim Yoon Ah's voice is absolutely stunning - as always - and she's singing harmony with herself here. Really brilliant. The best word for the melody is... haunting. It's really great. Seriously try it out.

Song: Shiroi Hada Ni Kuruu Aito Kanashimi No RONDO (白い肌に狂う愛と哀しみの輪舞)
Artist: MALICE MIZER
Album: Bara no Seidou (薔薇の聖堂)
Genre: Rock
Language: Japanese
Released: 2000
Official Site
Comments: This may be sacreligious, but I think that Klaha is my favourite MALICE MIZER lead singer. He was only on board for the final album, but he made this album so insanely sexy. His voice is incredibly low and powerful... have a listen and you can see why he's my fav. But this song is brilliant. Written by Mana (the sexy brain-child of the band), this song is heavy with orchestration (and even some harpsichord!) and doesn't have very much guitar aside from the gorgeous intro. Also, this was the only album made after the drummer Kami died, so it has no drums. The only electric instrument played throughout the song is the bass guitar, brilliantly played by the bassist Yu~Ki. Check out this one and the MALICE MIZER song that Nicole picked. She also wrote more history about one of our favourite bands.

Song: Shi no Butou ~a romance of the "Cendrillon"~ (死の舞踏)
Artist: MALICE MIZER
Album: Voyage
Genre: Rock
Language: Japanese
Released: 1996
Official Site
Comments: MALICE MIZER was formed in 1992 by guitarists Mana and Kozi. They then recruited Kami (drums), Yu~ki (bass) and Tetsu (vocals) and put out their first album "Memoire" 2 years later. Tetsu then left and Gackt replaced him, releasing his first single with them late 1995. He stayed until 1999, releasing 2 albums during his time there, when he left to become solo. Kami suddenly died in mid-1999 and was never replaced. In 2000 they released another album with 'secret' vocalist Klaha, who later became part of the band and stayed until their disbandment in late 2001.
Notable by their heavy influence of 1800 classical music, and extravagant makeup and costumes to match. Also for their stages of sound caused by 3 vocalist changes. They also have the odd case of seemingly much more popular in the overseas Japanese music fandom than in Japan.
MALICE MIZER is my favorite band, which is a tough position to have and hold for as long as they have. This is the second to last song on my favorite album of theirs. It's a perfect mix of gothic classical sounds/instruments and rock. Gackt's large range and classically trained vocals give it a very romantic feel to it. One of my favorite songs by them and highly recommended.

Song: Jounetsu no Sabaku (情熱の砂漠)
Artist: The Peanuts (ザ・ピーナッツ)
Album: The Peanuts: Best of
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 1973
Official Site
Comments: The Peanuts is a identical twin duo of Emi and Yumi Ito. They debuted in the late '50s with "Kawaii Hana" and became very popular in the '60s with songs like "Koi no VACANCE" and "ROOMA no Ame". They even appeared 2 films in the Mothra series as the twin fairies who call Mothra. Their career lasted until the mid-80s when they retired.
This song originally came out in 1973, If my sources are correct. (my CD doesn't list years) It is one of my absolute favorite Peanuts songs, and extremely catchy. A very strong sounding song mixed with Emi and Yumi's simultaneous vocals and 'ah's. It gets caught in my head often, and it won't be long before you sing along with it.

Song: For No One
Artist: The Beatles
Album: Revolver
Genre: Rock
Language: English
Released: 1966
Official Site
Comments: For those of you who don't know who the Beatles are, (are there any?) they are a British 4 member rock band consisting of John, Paul, George and Ringo. They debuted in 1962 and quickly became a sensation worldwide, and are often noted for their steady transformation from the beginning of their career of clean cut pop rock stars, to legitimate experimental rock musicians. Their career lasted until 1970 when they broke up to do their own projects.
I recently fell in love with this song while listening to songs Mum plays in the car. From one of their mid-albums, leading their way to "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". It's an extremely short song clocking in at a total of 2:01, but it's one of the prettiest, simplest, and melancholy songs I've heard and purely Beatles. It has recently jumped up to one of my favorite songs by them.

I have to say sorry for not updating last week! We had a lot going on and then Boris' computer died. And currently Boris is out and about in Philadelphia for the weekend, so all you've got is me this entry. ^^
And I recently got some great CDs, so I'm posting several songs for some albums.

Also, yousendit was not working well today, so I uploaded all the files to Megaupload. I don't know the number of downloads it is limited to, but if any of the links do not work, please comment and say so. I'll gladly reupload it.

Song: Ringo Oiwake (リンゴ追分)
Artist: Hibari Misora (美空ひばり)
Album: Kizuna (絆)
Genre: Enka?
Language: Japanese
Released: 2005
Song originally released: 1952
Official Site
Comments: Hibari Misora has recently become one of my favorite and most admired artists. At first I brushed her off as a dull enka singer, while I was completely wrong. She made her record debut with "Kappa BOOGIE WOOGIE" in 1949 at the young age of 12 and its jazzy style and her charisma took Japan by storm. She became one of the most influential and popular artists in Japan ever. Her carrer lasted 40 years, from 1949 to 1989 and with complete popularity until her sudden death at 51 due to pneumonia.
This is one of her most popular songs ever. Possibly the one that really made her a star and stick with people. A very light, slow paced, very-Japanese sounding song. Misora's voice suits the song perfectly, with her 15 year old higher-in-pitch vocals, and expressing with such sadness you can't help but feel the same while listening it.

Song: Omatsuri MAMBO (お祭りマンボ)
Artist: Hibari Misora (美空ひばり)
Genre: Enka?
Language: Japanese
Song originally released: 1952
Comments: An upbeat, fast paced song that really brings out the feeling of a festival. The way she sings "Washoii" really makes you want to get into this song. Though, near the end of the song it slows down, it helps with the contrast.
DOWNLOAD

Song: Makka na Taiyou (真赤な太陽)
Artist: Hibari Misora (美空ひばり)
Genre: Enka?
Language: Japanese
Song originally released: 1967
Comments: A great up beat and catchy song, with a clearly '60s sound synthesizers and all. Her voice deepened with age (30 here) really helps the sound of the song.

Song: Kuroyuri no Uta (黒百合の歌)
Artist: Shigeko Orii (織井茂子)
Album: Natsukashi no Utagoe Best 16 (懐かしの歌声 ベスト16)
Genre: Enka?
Language: Japanese
Released: 1996
Song originally released: 1954
Official Site
Comments: My current obsession. While I know next to nothing about Shigeko Orii, I'm in love with her for this song. Light instrymentation with strings and drums, and has a lot of traditional Japanese music sounds tied in it. Her voice is high pitched yet powerful, and sounds like she's got complete control over her vocals. The song is a wonderful mix which makes it sound very beautiful and powerful.
DOWNLOAD

Song: Ringo no Uta (リンゴの唄)
Artist: Michiko Namiki (並木路子)
Genre: Enka-ish pop?
Language: Japanese
Song originally released: 1946
Official Site
Comments: I did upload this in one of our very first updates. And I bought this CD solely for this song. But I thought I'd share this wonderful song yet again, because it has to be one of my favorite songs ever.
This song was written with a tie in to the movie "Soyokaze", in which Michiko acts. It was made to help lift peoples spirits in the aftermath of WWII. It did just that, and became a huge hit. It was so influential, that a memorial was even created for Michiko and the song was created.
But historical ties aside, this is one of the best songs I've ever heard. A light sounding infectious tune with very-1940s type string usage. Michiko's vocals are high pitched and sound bittersweet and really get you into the song.
I highly reccomend this song, as it is an absolute favorite of mine.

Song: GAME IS OVER
Artist: Momoe Yamaguchi (山口百恵)
Album: Yokosuka Story (横須賀ストーリー)
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 1976
Official Site
Comments: Yay, Momoe! Out of my recent CD purchases, Momoe certianly sticks out the prominent artist. I recently got 6 new albums by her, and I am hardly disappointed. This song was the b-side to her most popular single "Yokosuka Story", and the second track on her album titled the same. Her vocals are top-notch in this song, as she sings in one pitch throughout the entire song, just barely wavering from it in the chorus. The use of the brass, strings and drums gives this song a very powerful feel, and an addictive beat.

Song: BACK TO BACK (Senaka Awase) (BACK TO BACK (背中あわせ))
Artist: Momoe Yamaguchi (山口百恵)
Album: L.A. Blue
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 1979
Official Site
Comments: I bought 2 of the notable albums Momoe made while overseas, "GOLDEN FLIGHT" in London and "L.A. Blue" in Los Angeles. And it is very clear that the sound of those albums are heavily influenced by the way popular music was made each of the places. This song is a great example of that: sounding very much like what you'd hear from a US artist from the late '70s, with an infectious bass line filled with keyborards and drums. But it still has Momoe's touch of her sound and her voice, which makes it a great mix. And her voice going into falsetto at the end of the chours is just beautiful.

Song: Just Another Day
Artist: Oingo Boingo
Album: Dead Man's Party
Genre: 80's Rock
Language: English
Released: 1985
Official Site
Comments: Oingo Boingo - one of the many one hit wonders of the 1980's - is probably best known for it's lead singer, film score composer Danny Elfman. For those not well versed in his work, Elfman has scored everything from The Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands to Spiderman and even the theme from The Simpsons. Currently, his music can be found in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, where he provides a lot of the vocals as well.

As far as this song goes, I fell in love with it the first time I listened to it. I'm a big fan of synthesizer-heavy 80's music like that of A-Ha, Duran Duran, or A Flock of Seagulls, so this was my cup of tea. The lyrics are pretty creepy and dark, but are often... downright weird. But the best part about this song is Eflman's voice, which I heart due to the fact that he was the singing voice behind Jack from Nightmare Before Christmas, so I think his voice is bloody gorgeous. Check it out, especially if you're a fan of any of the previously mentioned movies.

Song: Nachinai Menya (начинай меня)
Artist: Nichya (Hичья)
Album: NAVSEGDA! (НАВСЕГДА!)
Genre: Pop
Language: Russian
Released: 2004
Official Site
Comments: I uploaded a Hичья song in the first update and I'm long overdue for a second helping of Hичья. Their style is along the lines of a lot of Tatu's music - probably because one of the members of this duo - Lena Kiper - wrote Tatu's most popular songs - "Not Gonna Get Us" and "All The Things She Said". The only word that comes to mind when I think of this song is sexy. Seriously. The vocals are hot, especially when Kiper uses her lower register. If you liked "Не верь, не бойся, не проси" from the last rotation, I strongly suggest you try this one on for size.

Song: Annyeong, Mimi (안녕, 미미)
Artist: Jaurim (자우림)
Album: PURPLE HEART
Genre: Rock
Language: Rock
Released: 1997
Official Site
Comments: This song is from Jaurim's first album and I'm putting it on this week because it's randomly gotten into my head several times this week, which is strange since I rarely listen to the song. This is the more jazzy/soulful version of Jaurim. The vocals are FREAKING GORGEOUS!! I also especially like the guitar effects in the beginning - they're sort of bordering on Surf Rock or something Tarantino would use. Or something. I heart this song.

Song: DOGFIGHT
Artist: move
Single: DOGFIGHT
Genre: Rock
Language: Japanese
Released: 2004
Official Site
Comments: move debuted in 1997 with the song "ROCK IT DOWN". Consisting of vocalist yuri, rap by motsu, and production by t.kimura. They began with a eurobeat sound with songs like "Gamble Rumble" and "Sweet Vibration". After a best-of release, in late 2003 they released the mini album "DECADANCE" where they changed their sound drastically to a harder rock sound.
This song one of my favorite songs ever. The string like background music is nothing less than addictive and mixed with yuri's great vocals, motsu's rap, and the great beat you've got a great song to just listen to.

Song: Magenta Story
Artist: SHAZNA
Album: Gold Sun and Silver Moon
Genre: Pop/Rock
Language: Japanese
Released: 1998
Official Site
Comments: SHAZNA is a rock trio who was very popular in Japan in 1998, during really a visual kei boom. SHAZNA released their first independent release around 1995, and got picked up a major record label in 1997. Well known for their lead vocalist and super crossdresser extraordinaire Izam. Their first major record album was so populat that the first and second press of it together sold nearly 1 million copies.
This song comes from their first major record album "Gold Sun and Silver Moon". It's not quite like the pop happy sound SHAZNA is known for, though it is probably my favorite from them. A very electronic and low in key song. Izam's voice is much less prominient in this song than in SHAZNA's other songs.

Comments: One fourth of super group SPEED, hiro debuted in 1999 with the song "AS TIME GOES BY" shortly before the announcement of the break up of SPEED. 2 singles and 3 years later, she finally released her first album "BRILLIANT". She since then switched labels released one more album.
This is possibly my favorite hiro song. It is an album track from her first album "BRILLIANT". A light yet addictive pop song which suits hiro's voice perfectly.

Song: Ne ver, ne boisya, ne praci (Не верь, не бойся, не проси)
Artist: Tatu (Тату)
Album: Ne ver, ne boisya, ne praci - Single (Не верь, не бойся, не проси)
Genre: Pop
Language: Russian
Released: 2001

Comments: Ah. Everyone's favourite fake Russian lesbians. I believe that this was a B-Side on one of their singles, but it's now being sold as one of the many compilations of Tatu songs being brought out in Russia. This is probably my favorite Tatu song. It's a terribly catchy pop song - probably not as catchy as their huge American hit "All The Things She Said", but I really like it. Check it out.

Comments: If you've seen this flash cartoon, then you may already know who the Witches are. This is the song from the cartoon for your listening pleasure and it's insanely catchy. Complete with an upbeat brass section and a walking bass line - as well as wailing vocals - this song kick ass. The rest of the album is as good, but it's hard to find since Korean albums go out of print pretty quickly.

Song: all night long
Artist: Ami Suzuki (鈴木あみ)
Album: FUN for FAN
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 2001
Official Site
Comments: Ami Suzuki debuted in 1997 at the age of 15 with "Love the island"; produced by super producer Tetsuya Komuro. Hit it big with this song and, her second single. Had several big hits (her best being "BE TOGETHER"). In 2000 her parents placed a lawsuit against her record company (Sony) for mismanagement. While she won the case, she was dropped, and blacklisted from the music industry. After a series of books put out, she produced a solo single independently in 2004 with a book company, which sold quite well. Another single on her own record label "Amity" which reached number 20 on the Oricon single charts got her a record contract with big Japanese label Avex, which she'll be releasing a new album with September 14th.
An extremely catchy dance tune that incorporates Ami's vocals perfectly into the music.

Album: 16 Sai no THEME (16才のテーマ)
Genre: Pop

Released: 1975

Comments: History: check with previous posts.
While not my favorite Momoe song, nor from an amazing album of hers (like "Dramatic"), this song I've currently been listening to constantly. An album track off her 6th album, and a perfect example of the quality music you can get from any random Momoe album. A mid-paced light pop tune perfectly suited for her voice then, with a very catchy chorus. Great '70s Jpop.

Song: Whisper
Artist: Namie Amuro (安室奈美恵)
Album: Concentration 20
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 1997
Official Site
Comments: For those who don't know Namie Amuro's history: she debuted in 1992 with the Jpop group SUPER MONKEY'S. After a few duds and member changes, they finally hit it big with "TRY ME ~Watashi wo Shinjite~". In 1995, Namie went solo with label Avex and produced by Tetsuya Komuro. She became a pop sensation and sold five 1 million (+) selling singles within the span of 2 years. She then took a year off to have a baby and get married. After her come back she started making music with a more hip-hop/R&B; twist. She recently released her 6th original solo album "The Queen of Hip-Pop".
This is from her 2nd album "Concentration 20" and possibly my favorite Namie song. A very bittersweet and distant sounding song, filled with a lot of industrial sounding SFX. Namie's voice really makes this song with her very powerful yet scratchy vocals in this song. I <3 it.

An album track from her 2nd and my favorite album "LOVEppears", a very catchy dance tune which really fits with her high pictched vocals. One of my favorite songs from her.

Album: The Wonderland
Genre: Rock

Comments: Yea. More Jaurim. This song is crazy mellow and Kim Yoon Ah's voice is... ethereal. Yes. I really like this song for the way it makes my house shake when I play it (yay for subwoofers!). And for the curious, this is the 13th most listened to song in my library. Check it out. So pretty.

This song is one of the two Kylie songs competing for most awesome Kylie song (the other one being "In Your Eyes"... which is lovely and a lot more dancey). Song: Lucky 7
Artist: Baby V.O.X
Album: Boyish Story
Genre: Pop/R&B; with some Rap?
Language: Korean
Released: 2001
Official Site
Comments: 5 member group Baby V.O.X debuted in 1997, but were a flop. They went through several member changes from their 1st to 3rd albums until they found the perfect combination. They hit big with songs like "Get Up" and "BaeShin". Though following the unpopular 7th album released last year, earlier this year Eunjin left the group to pursue acting. And just yesterday Eunhye left to do the same.
This is off their 5th album, which I had been hunting down on the only source overseas fans can get their older albums now: ebay; added to that the price can get extremely high. But I must say, it was worth it. This is my favorite album track off the album and it, along with nearly every song on the album, sounds like it could be a single. A very light song which really shows how good a pop song can be, and you don't need to have a big voice range to sound good.

Song: Superhero
Artist: Ani DiFranco
Album: Dilate
Genre: Folk Rock
Language: English
Released: 1996
Official Site
Comments: Ani DiFranco, born and raised in Buffalo NY (where I live!), debuted in 1989 with her self-titled album. Starting out acoustic and bald, you can easily see her evolution in styles, and use the length of her hair as a timeline. Now on her 14th album with a couple extras like lives and self covers.
This is off her 7th original album, and my favorite track from it. You really appreciate it when you read the lyrics -- an adorable angsty song about a person blaming the person they fell in love with for making them so regular. The instrumentation, although sparse, is very powerful mixed with her lovely voice which changes from loud to soft so easily.

Song: PUZZLE
Artist: Aya Ueto
Album: AYAUETO
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 2003
Official Site
Comments: Winner of an idol competition, Aya Ueto debuted in mid-2002 with the song "PURENESS". Since then she has become one of the most popular and notable celebrities in Japan today. She has put out 3 albums and been in numerous films and dramas, and is signed to more commercials than you can count.
I love Aya Ueto. I got into her when her 2nd single "kizuna" came out and have been an avid fan ever since. She is the only idol today that I think is remotely like that of (my favorite) Momoe Yamaguchi. She’s conquered music, film and TV and being absolutely awesome doing it all. She's also one of the only active artists that I follow every release of (and am rarely disappointed). This is my favorite album track off her 1st album (and my personal favorite of hers) AYAUETO. An extremely light and bouncy pop song that you can never get out of your head, I love it.

Song: Magic Island Part I

Album: Nostalgia
Genre: Goth/Art Rock
Language: Instrumental

Official Site (WARNING: Not Much Here)
Comments: Gaia is this Korean band that throws goth rock, classical instrumentation, and Korean traditional instruments in a blender and turns out this really great album. If you like MALICE MIZER or Nightwish, this is seriously right up your alley.

Comments: This is the second song on the album and I put the first two songs on because I think that they complement each other so well and they're both just gorgeous. This one starts off slower and features the gritty voice of the lead singer, but it soon switches to this gorgeous and dramatic song with sweeping instumentation and the absolutely ethereal voice of the female singer. I also love how the haegum contrasts with the more "Western" sounds and everything. Beautiful song.

Song: Ha Ha Ha Song (하하하쏭)
Artist: Jaurim (자우림)
Album: All You Need Is Love
Genre: Rock
Language: Korean
Released: 2004
Official Site
Comments: This song was my first step into the wonderful world of Indie K-Rock. And for the past 7 months, I've been crazy rabid about it. If you've looked into Jaurim or at least their fourth album, you can see a huge difference between that one and this, the fifth one. That was more dark and gloomy, while this is happy and bubbly. I love how Jaurim manages to re-invent themselves every album.

The song (which is crazy popular) starts out with a seductive (ooh! adjectives!) Spanish guitar with a bit of Kim Yoon Ah's deeper voice. Then out of nowhere, it becomes a fast-paced crazy song that you can dance to incessantly (or at least I have). One of my friends called it "ska-ish"... probably due to the brass instrumentations. I love the vocals during the verses because they're HOT. One of my favorite songs... EVER.

I recently received some Bollywood CDs I ordered, and have been completely obsessed with the songs. For some background info on Bollywood, the films much more often than not include song and dance sequences which the actors have to perform to. The songs are really sung by playback singers and just lip synched by the actors.

Song: Silsila Ye Chaahat Ka
Artist: Shreva Ghosal
Album: Devdas
Genre: Soundtrack
Language: Hindi
Released: 2002
Official Site
Comments: This is my favorite soundtrack so far; so much I needed to have two songs from it! Devdas was a huge production for Bollywood that came out in 2002. It was a breakout film for playback singer Shreva Ghosal, one of the industry's youngest singers. Her high vocals are extremely beautiful accompanied by the soft instrumentation of strings, drums and a small chorus.

Song: Dola de Dola

Comments: This song and the previous song have really been competing for top spot as my favorite for a little over 2 weeks now. But while the previous song is slower in tempo, this is an all out dance song. You really cannot get the song out of your heard once you've heard it. A grand composition including several different drums chorus and brass band in some places. And the duet of the two different voices is absolutely wonderful.

A very slow rhythmed song, added with Chinoy's vocals that hardly ever wavers from the soft subdued sound. A great song to go to sleep to.

Song: Aisa Jadoo
Artist: Sundhi Chauhan
Album: Khakee
Genre: Soundtrack
Language: Hindi
Released: 2004
Official Site
Comments: Unlike the other upbeat song I uploaded, "Dola de Dola" which was full of traditional instrumentation, this one is more representative of what you'd hear from Bollywood movies with a modern setting. Electronic added with traditional Indian instruments plus some random effects (like sirens) and you get the backdrop of a great dance sequence. But really it's a fun dance song; while repetitive in some parts it's quite good.

Song: Wu Zian (无限)
Artist: F.I.R.
Album: Wu Zian (无限)
Genre: Pop Rock
Language: Mandarin
Released: 2005
Official Site
Comments: F.I.R. is a Taiwanese trio that debuted in 2004 and got crazy popular with their first album. This song is the first song from their second album, which came out earlier this year. I totally dig it because it switches back and forth from something more rock-tastic to these sweet interludes, sung by the lead singer, Faye. It's like the song doesn't know what it is, but in a fun way. Check it out.

Song: Ddeonaganae (떠나가네)
Artist: Roller Coaster (롤러코스터)
Album: Irsang Dapansi (일상다반사)
Genre: Fusion Rock
Language: Korean
Released: 2000
Official Site
Comments: Roller Coaster is trio from Korea that plays jazz/funk-infused rock - sort of like Jaurim, but moreso. They've released four albums since 1999 as well as a live album. This song is fairly simple, but really catchy and a bit faster and more upbeat in comparison to their other songs. I especially like the electronic effects throughout the song. It's all video gamey.. sorta.

Song: Byla (Была)
Artist: Chicherina (Чичерина)
Album: Off/On
Genre: Rock
Language: Russian
Released: 2004
Official Site
Comments: Chicherina is a Russian band, which basically revolves around the lead singer Yuliya Chicherina (who somehow reminds me a lot of Bjork). This is off of their fourth album and this song is a lot mellower than most of their ones. If you liked the Zemfira song I uploaded back in the day, you'll probably like this one. Also, if you like this song, there are videos for download on her site. (For those not well versed in cyrillic, they're where it says "Видео").

Graduation theme!
I just graduated from High School on Friday, so in my celebration and excitement I decided to upload some of my favorite songs connected in some way with some type of graduation.

Song: my graduation
Artist: SPEED
Album: RISE
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 1998
Official Site
Comments: SPEED was a 4 member group consisting of Hiro, Eriko, Takako, and Hitoe. They debuted in 1995 with the single "Body & Soul" and SPEED fever started. They stayed extremely popular untill their break up in 2000 where the members went solo.
This song was released after their biggest single "WHITE LOVE", and did just about as good as that one. This is my personal favorite SPEED song: the changes from the soft verse and loud and intense chorus is extremely beautiful and catchy.

Song: Sotsugyo (卒業)
Artist: ZONE
Album: N
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 2004
Official Site
Comments: ZONE was a 4 member idol band consisting of Miyu, Maiko, Mizuho, and Tomoka. They broke up at the end of april this year. This is the first single with member Tomoka. One of the original band leader Takayo left the group to continue school.
This is a very upbeat, very ZONE-esque song, as always complimenting Miyu's lead vocals greatly.

Song: Ii Hi Tabidachi (いい日旅立ち)
Artist: Momoe Yamaguchi (山口百恵)
Album: PLAYBACK MOMOE part 2
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 1978
Official Site
Comments: This song, unlike the other 2 Momoe songs I've previously posted, was an actual single. And one she's quite well known for. While there is no blatant graduation words in the title, the song is titled "Ii Hi Tabidachi" translates into "Leaving on a good day" and is included in graduation compilations.
The song itself is very slow and has a lovely build in instrumentation and Momoe's soft vocals through out the whole song. It is a very lovely song, and does nothing but add to my love for Momoe.

Song: Morgenstern
Artist: Rammstein
Album: Reise, Reise
Genre: Industrial
Language: German
Released: 2004
Official Site
Comments: German is awesome. Rammstein is a German industrial band and this song is off their most recent album "Reise, Reise". They've had a couple singles off of this album that have really done well in Europe, but this is my favorite song off of the album. The tone of the song changes as the lyrics go from dark and angry to hopeful. Brilliant song.

Song: Haiiro no Hitomi (灰色の瞳)
Artist: Shiina Ringo (with Kasuno Masamune of SPITZ) (椎名林檎 with 草野マサムネ of SPITZ)
Album: Utaite Myouri (唄ひ手冥利-其ノ壱)
Genre: Rock, Cover
Language: Japanese
Released: 2002
Official Site
Comments: I am currently completely obsessed with this song - first song off of Ringo's 2002 cover album. This is a cover of a (70s singer) Tokiko Kato song. Singing with Shiina Ringo is the lead vocalist and guitarist of popular Jrock band SPITZ, Kasuno Masamune. Masamune accompanies Ringo's vocals perfectly. This song is even more brilliant if you listen to the original track (check HMV.co.jp) which is so much different. Shiina Ringo's turned a ballad-type, 70's song into a rock spectacle. So amazing.

Song: Flying Jelly Attack
Artist: Shonen Knife
Album: Let's Knife
Genre: Rock
Language: Engrish. To the extreme.
Released: 1992
Official Site
Comments: Shonen Knife is a Japanese trio who debuted in 1983. Nearly 10 years later they released this album in America and became a cult favorite and they now tour in the US and Canada, as well as in Japan. This album is nearly in all simple half-comprehensible engrish and this particular song has a surf-rock flavour to it as well as ridiculous lyrics, but it's insanely catchy.

Song: Otome no Inori (乙女の祈り)
Artist: Momoe Yamaguchi (山口百恵)
Album: Second Album Aoi Kajitsu/Kinji rareta Asobi
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 1973
Official Site
Comments: Momoe Yamaguchi is a very popular '70s pop idol, and one of my absolute favorite artists. With how much I gush about her everywhere else, it's surprising to see I've only uploaded one of her songs, and that was on the first update.
For those who downloaded the previous song I upped by her, "Kanashi ni Drama Man" (if anyone wants a re-upload, feel free to ask. ^^), this is very different. While that one was from her 17th album, this song is an album track from a much earlier album, her second album "Aoi Kajitsu/Kinji rareta Asobi". (keep in mind that she was just 14 when she recorded this.) Much simpler in style, Momoe's soft vocals compliment the light instrumentation delightfully. But both songs uploaded by her stand as some of my favorite Momoe songs, and exemplify the diversity that I adore so much from her works. Check out my romanization of this song at my Momoe lyrics site.

Song: Sha la la
Artist: Sylvie Vartan
Album: Les Annes RCA 1961 - 1983
Genre: Pop
Language: French
Released: 2004 (the song originally in 1964)
Official Site
Comments: Sylvie Vartan debuted in France in 1961, and took it by stork, quickly becoming one of France's top artists. With catchy beats, cute image, and lovely low key singing voice it's quite hard to resist the charm Sylvie gives off. She's still active in France today. For any Alias fans like myself, an interesting tidbit: Sylvie is in fact, actor Michael Vartan's aunt. (Yay, Vaughn.)
"Sha la la" is a very addictive tune. Clocking in at only 2 minutes and 13 seconds due to it being the early 60s. But it doesn't take away anything from the song; it just makes you want to play it over and over again.

Song: BLUE ROMANCE [Omoi] (BLUE ROMANCE 「想い」)
Artist: Lareine
Album: BLUE ROMANCE
Genre: Rock
Language: Japanese
Released: 1997
Official Site
Comments: Lareine debuted in 1994, was the one of the first of many Visual Kei bands to have a 1700s France sound and image. (along with my top artist, MALICE MIZER: though stylistically Lareine is much more delicate than MALICE MIZER.) This is off a redone version of their first mini album "BLUE ROMANCE", which was released earlier in 1997.
I simply adore this song. While both the other 2 songs in my update don't even hit the 3 minute mark, this one is nearly 6 and a half minutes long; but it goes by just as fast as the other two. This song is the epitome of what I love about Lareine -- beautiful instrumentation that builds in complexity, which compliments Kamjio's distant vocals perfectly. Highly recommended.

Song: IMAGE
Artist: LUNA SEA
Album: IMAGE
Genre: Rock
Language: Japanese
Released: 1992
Official Site
Comments: Oh, this song is so sexy. This band's got 5 members: Ryuchi, Sugizo, Shinya, J, Inoran. Remember them. There will be a test later [sarcasm font]. They debuted in 1989 (under the name LUNACY.. but isn't LUNA SEA is so much cooler?) and this song is from their first major album in 1992 (this is when the name change occured). Since then, they've brought out 7 albums, a bazillion singles, and a boat load of best of albums. Oh yea. And they broke up in 2000. As far as the song goes, the vocals are gorgeously dark and flow beautifully. It easily beats out ROSIER as my favourite LUNA SEA song, which had reigned supreme for many years before I actually sat down and listened to IMAGE. If you like the harder rock stylings of Dir en grey or even X Japan, check out this one.

Song: VLAD
Artist: Jaurim (자우림)
Album: 4
Genre: Rock
Language: Korean
Released: 2002
Official Site
Comments: If I could scream "I love Jaurim!" from the rooftops, I would. Maybe I'll do that once my jaw heals (bloody wisdom teeth >_<). Anyway! This is the third Jaurim song I've posted thus far. If anyone wants more or wants me to repost any of the older ones, leave a comment and I'll happily oblige. This song is fairly short (only 2:12), but those two minutes are filled with some of the hardest rock I've heard out of this band. That's why Jaurim is amazing. They toy with different styles and techniques so you can get basically anything you want from them. This is just a solid rock and roll song. Kim Yoon Ah's voice starts out a bit sweet over a simple drum beat and guitar riff, but once they bust out with the chorus, the song is a bounce around screaming lyrics type of rock and roll. Check it out if you like Shiina Ringo or even Garbage.

Song: DAYDREAM
Artist: JUDY AND MARY
Album: The Great Escape -COMPLETE BEST (Originally off of JAM )
Genre: Pop/Rock
Language: Japanese
Released: 1994
Official Site
Comments: JUDY AND MARY is a group of four (Isoya Yuki, Asanuma Takuya, Onda Yoshihito, and Igarashi Kohta) - none of which are named Judy nor Mary. Go figure. This band was probably my first major introduction to J-Pop/Rock because Nicole played their music INCESSANTLY for several months. JUDY AND MARY was created in 1992 and came out with 7 albums between then and 2001, which was the year they broke up. This song's happy, it's bubbly, but it's also rocktastic. Yuki's vocals are on the squeaky side, which could get annoying to some people, but I like it. It's lively and definately catchy (since it's been stuck in my head for the past three days) and the wee bit of Spanish guitar is to die for.

Comments: I'm in love with Baby V.O.X. I can't explain why, just that they're awesome. The only group I can even stand of the wave of groups in Korea during the late 90s - early 00s. Well, I recently received their Special album. While I'm a little saddened by the lack of full songs [it's a mega-mix type... thing?] (and at websites not telling me of this), here is one of 3 new songs placed on the album. After the first listen you'll get the chorus popping up in your head.

Song: C
Artist: Miho Nakayama (中山美穂)
Single: C
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 1985
Official Site
Comments: Miho Nakayama debuted as a regular 80s idol with this song in 1985. She's still active, but focusing on her acting. Her style borders right in the middle of Noriko Sakai's cute image and Akina Nakamori's seriousness. I completely adore this song -- it's so lovely, subdued and catchy. After listening to her best of album, I kept getting the way she says "dakishimete" in the chorusy-bit in my head constantly.

Song: Yume Miru Shoujo Ja Irarenai (夢見る少女じゃいられない)
Artist: Aikawa Nanase (相川七瀬)
Album: Red (レッド)
Genre: Rock
Language: Japanese
Released: 1996
Official Site
Comments: This is Nanase Aikawa's first single, which she released in 1995. It appeared on her first album "Red" the following year. Since then, she has accumulated 10 albums - including two "best of" albums. I haven't found her recent work to be very rocktastic, but the ballady Aikawa is still good. This is one of my favourite JRock songs. It's got an awesome melody, a great beat, and is heavy in guitar work and to top it all off, her voice is gritty and powerful.

Song: Blue 923
Artist: Loveholic (러브홀릭)
Album: Invisible Things
Genre: Pop/Rock
Language: Korean
Released: 2004
Official Site
Comments: Loveholic is a Korean rock band and this song is from their second album. Often compared to Britrock, the song is very mellow like Blur or Radiohead's songs - the intro reminds me of something either band would do. But once the song gets going, the singer, Jisun, furthers the sort of dreamlike feel of the song. Overall, it's pretty good - probably my favorite on the album.

Song: Naegerowa (내게로 와)
Artist: Cherry Filter
Album: Made In Korea?
Genre: Rock
Language: Korean
Released: 2002
Official Site
Comments: Cherry Filter is one of the more popular Korean rock bands, which says a lot since Korea's music scene is mostly (and sometimes nauseatingly) driven by hip hop or ballads. This song is on their second of three albums. Naegerowa is very bouncy and the lead singer Youjeen has crazy range and power in her voice. It's ridiculously catchy (in my opinion) due to it's spiffy melody. This is a "dance about your room" type of song.

Single: Sand Beige ~Sabaku e~ (SAND BEIGE ~砂漠へ~)
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 1985

Comments: Akina Nakamori was one of the biggest Jpop singers of the '80s. I got her best-of last year around this time and it had to be the only CD in my player for the 2 months following. This was one of the first songs I attatched to.

Song: Cha Cha (차차)
Artist: Eugene
Album: My True Style...
Genre: Pop
Language: Korean
Released: 2003
Official Site
Comments: Eugene was one third of Korean pop group S.E.S. In late 2002 S.E.S broke up and Eugene was the first member to release solo material with this album. I got this album around when it was released on a whim. Overall it wasn't that good, but two songs stuck out for me, this is one of them. Be it the actual sound or nostalgia tired to my constant playing of this song, this song has such a summery feel for me and I love it.

Song: A contre-courant
Artist: Alizée
Album: Mes courants électriques
Genre: Pop
Language: French
Released: 2003

Comments: My theme this week is "languages I've studied". Because I'm a dork. And because there are (conveniently) only three. But anyway, this song is from Alizée's second album after becoming crazy popular with her first album "Gourmandises". This is my favorite song from her second album, mostly due to the beat and singable lyrics. Check it out. And if you like this, there are videos on her site from both albums - a lot of them are only accessible from the French-speaking part, though.

Song: Layu Layu (Лаю-лаю)

Album: SuperDetka (Superдетка)
Genre: Pop
Language: Russian
Released: 2004

Comments: Пропаганда is a pop trio from Russia. Back in the day, they were more of a grunge-esque group, but today they've got super pop-startastic. I really like the beat in this one and the vocals (for the most part). I admit than when they go into the crazy high vocalizations, my brain hurts... but I still listen to it over and over, so it can't be hurting that much. Again, there are videos on the site as well as entire albums for download (gasp!) if you want to explore further, but it's all in Russian - but it could be a wonderful learning experience!

Song: Kioku to Sora (記憶と空)
Artist: MALICE MIZER
Album: memoire
Genre: Rock!
Language: Japanese
Released: 1994
Official Site
Comments: Dakishimete kioku to sora... Words cannot express how much I love MALICE MIZER. This is from their first album - and their first of three singers, Tetsu. They're most famous for their second lead singer Gackt, who has since been launched into stardom in Japan. I love how regardless of who sings, you can still tell that it is a MALICE MIZER song, even though each singer came with their own style. Tetsu's voice isn't as melodic as Gackt's or Klaha's (the third and final lead singer), but that fits with the fast-pased music that relies heavily on Kami's drum beat abd Yu~Ki's walking bass line <3. If you like very eclectic rock music that is a wee bit goth, check this out.

Comments: While I'm not much of fan of much male sung pop, I can't help but love Hideki Saijo. Hideki Saijo is a Jpop singer who debuted in the early 70s with "Koisuru Kisetu" and whose carrer has carried on for 30 years. This song is simply addictive, and I just had to get it after watching a live video where this was peformed.

I got into Ely through watching MTV español, and I'm quite happy I stayed on that channel when I did. I consider her to be very much like my favorite solo Japanese rocker Ringo Shiina. Her completely laid-back rock style really brings out how damn sexy Spanish can be. Highly reccomended.

Comments: I heart Rurutia... This song starts out with a dramatic violin solo as well as some mystical vocal parts until it busts out with the guitar and the harder instruments. Song: Japanese Girl (PV rip)
Artist: hitomi
Single: Japanese Girl
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 2005

Comments: hitomi debuted November 28th (my birthday!) 1994 with "Let's Play Winter". Produced by mega-producer Tetsuya Komuro (along with top names like Tomomi Kahara, Namie Amuro, and Ami Suzuki) Her biggest hit was the VERY-pop tune "CANDY GIRL". In 1999 hitomi broke away from TK and started doing music she wanted to.
This the PV rip of hitomi's first single of 2005. (release date: 05.06.01) An extremely catchy pop song whose chorus will be sure to be stuck in your head with first listen. The PV also made me finally realize hitomi's sex appeal which everyone always raves about. Get it.

While Pink Lady cannot top my number one 70s artist, Momoe Yamaguchi, they are climbing very quickly up my list. "Monster" was the last single in a run of 5 straight million selling singles. An extremely catchy song, you have to love their unconventional sound, quirky sound effects, and funky unison singing. I highly reccomend this one.

In addition to Hong Kong, she has also lived in Japan and America and speaks each country's language quite well. In 2001 she even tried to break into the Japanese market but didn't make a hit. This comes from her 3rd disc on her massive best-of, "RED" released in 2003. A light dance tune, and my favorite song from her.

Comments: This song is part of the second solo effort of Jaurim lead singer, Kim Yoon Ah. I'm not a fan of ballads, I admit. But this one is fabulous - probably due to the piano and string arrangements that give a classical feel to the song. Kim Yoon Ah's vocals help it out a lot. Check it out ^.^

Song: Little Rhymes
Artist: Mercury Rev
Album: All Is Dream
Genre: Alt Rock
Language: English
Released: 2001
Official Site
Comments: I bring you this band that had its humble beginnings in my hometown of Buffalo, NY. They have since expanded and have gained a lot of popularity in Europe and Japan - I even got a bunch of their singles on a trip to London. Their style is very mellow and the lead singer reminds me a lot of Neil Young, probably due to his higher range and the soothing timbre of his voice. Have a listen. Especially the chorus *melts*.

Song: Korabli (Корабли)
Artist: Yulia Savicheva (Юлия Савичева)
Album: Vysoka (Высоко)
Genre: Pop
Language: Russian
Released: 2005
Official Site
Comments: Another Russian goodie (because I'm a wee bit obsessed). This girly was the Russian contestant to the Eurovision Song Contest back in 2004 (she came in 11th place). This song is from her third release since then and it's among the more mellow, ballad-like songs on the album. It's a perfect example of why I heart Russian music - while other countries separate their musical genres, the Russians smash them all together, leaving us with ballad-like songs drizzled with electronic techniques. Enjoy!

Song: Ringo no Uta (リンゴの歌)
Artist: Namiki Michiko (並木路子)
Single: Ringo no Uta
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 1946
Official Site
Comments: Namiki Michiko, real name Tsuneko Nango, was born in 1921 in Taiwan and grew up in Tokyo. In 1935 she joined Shochiku theatrical company's girl troupe. During World War II, she lost all of her family: her brother and father died fighting in 1944, and her mom during an air raid in 1945. During Japan's reconstruction songwriter Hachiro Sato came to her to sing this song because of her loss. It was featured in the musical "Soyokaze", and became a huge hit which helped lift the spirits of the Japanese people.
This is a lovely song which I can't get enough of. Namiki's vocals are a great compliment to the simple instrumentation of the song. What's great about the song, is that it isn't THAT dated, I could see this song being released today. I highly reccomend this.

Song: Ya Weledi
Artist: Natacha Atlas
Album: Halim
Genre: Pop?
Language: Arabic
Released: 1997
Official Site
Comments: Born in Brussels and of Egyptian decent, Natacha Atlas incorporates traditional arabic styles into her songs. Singing mainly in Arabic, but also touching on French and English
This seven minute song is simply beautiful: Very mellow, and Natacha's vocals give it such a lovely tone which simply enhances the Arabic language. Also, for Sonic 2 fans, 37 seconds into it, both Boris and I are reminded of the Oil Ocean Zone stage's BGM. Hehe. ^^

Song: Just a real love night
Artist: Tomomi Kahala (華原朋美)
Album: Kahala Compilation
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 1999
Official Site
Comments: As part of the wave of TK-produced dance artists of the mid-90s, Tomomi Kahala debuted in 1995 with the popular single "keep yourself alive". One now could associate her as an early Ami Suzuki, as they are both TK soloists and they are both infamous for being "tone deaf". She hit it big with her single "I'm proud", her carrer was very hectic at its peak with constant appearences and a high-profile relationship with producer TK. Her carrer and personal life both bottomed out with her split from TK and rumored drug abuse. She is now releasing on a much less often basis.
Originally an album track off of her 1st album "LOVE BRACE", this song is so good they included it on her best of. Nothing much to say but this is my favorite song by her.

Song: Narnia
Artist: Serart
Album: Serart
Genre: Experimental
Language: English/Armenian
Released: 2003
Official Site
Comments: Serart is a project by System of a Down's Serj Tankian and Armenian avant-garde folk artist Arto Tuncboyaciyan (Serj plus Arto = Serart). I became interested in this group during my SOAD fangirl days. This song has a mellow tone to it thanks to the female vocals from Jenna Ross and Tuncboyaciyan's repetitive, ethereal harmony. Also, Serj pops in for a powerful solo towards the end. It's a beautiful song. Best one on the album (IMO). If you like this, there is a 13-minute streaming audio file on the website. It's a conglomeration of all of the songs on the album.

Song: Kabukicho No Joou (歌舞伎町の女王)
Artist: Shiina Ringo (椎名林檎)
Album: Muzai Moratorium (無罪モラトリアム)
Genre: Pop/Rock
Language: Japanese
Released: 1999
Official Site
Comments: I. Love. Shiina. Ringo. Seriously. This song is the second one on her first (and most straight-forward) album Muzai Moratorium and is currently my most played song on ITunes, and for good reason. It's definately one to play loudly with the windows open. This is a bouncier song than my other picks, so for those of you who like happier pop/rock (or even if you don't!), check this one out. It's brilliant.

Song: Samolet (Самолет)
Artist: Zemfira (Земфира)
Album: Vendetta (Вендетта)
Genre: Pop/Rock
Language: Russian
Released: 2005
Official Site
Comments: Another instance of my Russian obsession. I had a hard time choosing between a few of her songs, but I'm feeling complacent today, so I'll give y'all this one. This song is bloody beautiful. The instrumentation is very mellow and dream-like (features a harp!) while the vocals are very simple, a bit raw, and repeat the equally simple melody. It's short and it's sweet. Try it out.

Song: Starwalker
Artist: Buffy Sainte-Marie
Album: Coincidence and Likely Stories
Genre: Folk
Language: English
Released: 1992
Official Site
Comments: Buffy Sainte-Marie is known as one of the main people associated with the folk revival movement in the 60s. She grew popular for her songs mostly on protest and love. She disappeared from the mainstream music scene during Johnson's Presidency and she was blacklisted with music that "deserved to be suppressed". But her popularity grew thanks to continuous appearances at grassroots concerts, AIM (American Indian Movement) and other activist events. In 1976 she stopped making music to raise her son, during which she appeared for 5 years on Sesame Street. She even won an Academy Award for writing "Up Where We Belong" for the film "An Officer and A Gentleman"
This is from her comeback album "Coincidence and Likely Stories" released in 1992. Both Boris and I associate it strongly with our childhood as our mother played it constantly. But sentimental attachment aside, this is a wonderfully strong song. With the inclusion of lovely traditional Native vocalists and drums, it'll bring out the inner Native American in all of us. ^^

Song: Koi Dorobou (恋泥棒)
Artist: Chiyo Okumura (奥村チヨ)
Single: Koi Dorobou (恋泥棒)
Genre: Pop
Language: Japanese
Released: 1969
Official Site
Comments: Chiyo Okumura got her first big break when she was a teen singing a song for an energy drink commercial. A talent agency saw potential and signed her with Toshiba Records.
Chiyo Okumura is my favorite '60s Jpop artist -- her style and songs are simply amazing. And "Koi Dorobou" is my favorite song by her: part of her "Love Series", this is a very simple very 60s sounding song. Coupled with Chiyo's enka-infused vocals it has a bad habit of jumping in my head, er, a lot.

Song: Yan / Smoke (烟)
Artist: Faye Wong (王菲)
Album: Jiang Ai / To Love (將愛)
Genre: Pop
Language: Mandarin
Released: 2003
Official Site
Comments: Faye Wong is amazing.
In addition to that she is also one of the most popular singers in China. Debuting in 1989 under the stage name of Shirley Wong she released regular Canto-pop of the early '90s. However getting bored of singing the same songs, she decided to change her style and go by her real name Faye. Her popularity only grew from then. She also appears in movies, and is in one of my favorites: "Chungking Express".
This is off of her most recent album "Jiang Ai", a very mellow and beautiful song that accentuates her mumble-like singing. I <3 it.
