Review by Jonathan Widran A few decades ago, when the release of a George Benson album was an event for either jazz guitar or R&B vocal enthusiasts, his projects indeed lived up to the album title he employs here. While the new collection probably won't be an essential part of the Benson enthusiast's library, it's fun to see him trying to stay in the post-millennial urban groove hip with some of the younger generation's top songwriter/producers like Joshua Thompson (who's produced for O-Town, Aretha Franklin, and Babyface) and Joe. Those who wish he'd remember his prowess as a jazz guitarist have to content themselves with its general background capacity behind pleasant romantic vocal textures and easy grooving hip-hop shuffle grooves. Fortunately, Benson's in particularly fine voice, and most of the hooks are catchy from the get go. Conceptually, the best tunes are "Six Play" (which we soon realize is a love song to his six-string) and "Cell Phone," which postulates the idea that God and our late loved ones are accessible by wireless. There are a few stylistic deviations from the basic cool formula here, most notably the gospel-tinged "Whole Man," and the lush, gently exotic, flamenco-flavored soul tune "Strings of Love." The hope is that Benson's collaborations with the hipsters will expose his legendary talents to the kids who might otherwise shy away from the charms of an elder statesman.

Review by Richard S. Ginell
This is the peak of George Benson's courtship of the mass market -- a superbly crafted and performed pop album with a large supporting cast -- and wouldn't you know that Quincy Jones, the master catalyst, is the producer. Q's regular team, including the prolific songwriter Rod Temperton and the brilliant engineer Bruce Swedien, is in control, and Benson's voice, caught beautifully in the rich, floating sound, had never before been put to such versatile use. On "Moody's Mood," Benson really exercises his vocalese chops and proves that he is technically as fluid as just about any jazz vocalist, and he become a credible rival to Al Jarreau on the joyous title track. Benson's guitar now plays a subsidiary role -- only two of the ten tracks are instrumentals -- but Q has him play terrific fills behind the vocals and in the gaps, and the engineering gives his tone a variety of striking, new, full-sounding timbres. The instrumentals themselves are marvelous: "Off Broadway" is driving and danceable, and Ivan Lins' "Dinorah, Dinorah" grows increasingly seductive with each play. Benson should have worked with Jones from this point on, but this would be their only album together.

Telarc Jazz presents another crystalline jazz session from the legendary musician Oscar Peterson. Delectable moments with reminiscent tunes, together with the perky jazz translations and exceptional solos, deliver a mellow and memorable session destined to become a classic. Peterson, together with his legendary peers Benny Carter on sax, Clark Terry on trumpet and flugelhorn, and Ray Brown on bass with the tasteful playing of Lorne Lofsky on guitar and the elegant drumming of Lewis Nash, make The More I See You a not-to-be-missed jazz release.

AMG:
This lovely compilation taken from dates recorded in the mid-1970s presents two of jazzdom's great lyricists - the incomparable trumpeter, Chet Baker and the equally incomparable alto saxophonist, Paul Desmond. Both of the principals play superbly. Each note counts. For Desmond, the 1977 tracks - "You Can't Go Home Again," "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You," "You've Changed" and "How Deep Is The Ocean?" - were, with the exception of a cameo on an Art Garfunkel date, his last recordings. Along with "Tangerine" and "Autumn Leaves," there's also the impressive Don Sebesky arrangement of Joaguin Rodrigo's "Concierto De Aranjueza," with guitarist Jim Hall, pianist Roland Hanna, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Steve Gadd.
Amazon:
By the time the two men came together in 1977, Che Baker was prematurely aged by the hard life he'd lived in the underworld of narcotics. He was badly beaten by gangsters in 1968 and lost most of his teeth. He had to give up the trumpet for some time and worked as a petrol station attendant. The delightful Paul Desmond was a gifted and humorous man whose only apparent failing was his inability to stay in one place for more than one night because he believed that a jealous husband was pursuing him around the world to kill him while he was on tour. The tracks here were recorded at two sessions in 1974 and 1977: "You Can't Come Home Again" is Desmond's last ever recording. It's interesting to hear the two men responding so well to the disciplined settings provided for them by CTI, the original record company. Both play with poise and relaxation and each produces some of his best work. This is essentially a poignant album full of good improvising on imaginatively chosen themes ("Concierto de Aranjuez"!) and despite the tendency of Bob James's electronic piano to tinkle, it doesn't interfere. James is only on two tracks, being replaced on the other five by Kenny Barron and Roland Hanna. Anyone who has this album will play it often.

Paul Desmond, alto sax
Jim Hall, guitar
Roland Hanna, piano

Pianist Paul Bley has set many milestones along his illustrious career, taking the piano on undiscovered paths and fermenting his art with unbridled imagination. Risk has never daunted him, and even as he takes it, he keeps logic in lockstep.
He is as much at home in avant-garde and free explorations as he is in giving the mainstream a new sparkle, and for a time, even tinkering with electronics. The call to experiment is ever present, wrapped compactly into the history of jazz.
About Time is a solo recording. The pianist lures the listener into his web as he blends technique into the expanse of his creativity. Space and time are worked into a melodic dance, atonality sings besides formal structure, and harmony strikes a rich chord. His time signatures are shaped on the go as a pensive interlude can turn into a lithe romp when he traverses tangents with agile lines.
Bley's sense of invention never ceases, as on the title track where he works the blues seamlessly into the theme and then rustles it with a flurry of notes. He interpolates silence into his scheme as well as he does a lyrical flourish. Change is his compass, surprise his guide.
The mood on "Encore" is playful, setting an exuberant frame within which the artist skitters and gambols, draws back and reflects, and fathoms the deeper recesses of the blues. His artistry is upfront and center. With About Time it takes Bley less than 45 minutes to stamp his virtuosity. (all.about.jazz)

Review by Richard S. Ginell
After a quarter of a century in the Warner Bros. camp and five years on the recording sidelines, Randy Crawford drew a circle back to the beginning, reuniting with keyboardist Joe Sample. In turn, the old Crusader put together a genuinely distinguished rhythm section, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Steve Gadd, and called upon Tommy LiPuma to produce the disc. That combination ought to guarantee a certain floor of competence from the get-go — and it's great to report that this disc always rises above it, sometimes considerably above it. By this time, both Crawford and Sample were established veterans — and the music they make here seems to come so easily from within, with only minimal backing and nothing getting in their way. Gadd puts out a propulsive beat on brushes that pushes the title track along just fine — and his work on "See Line Woman" and "Last Night at Danceland" generates something resembling the irresistible Crusaders groove, giving Sample something to trip lightly and soulfully through. Every track seems to change style with a smooth movement of the clutch — the slinky R&B funk of "Lovetown," the gentle Latin beat of "Rio de Janeiro Blue," the pure mainstream piano trio jazz of "But Beautiful," the heavy blues atmosphere of "Tell Me More and More and Then Some," a trip back to the 1960s' Top 40 with "Everybody's Talking" (dig Randy's fervent high note that Harry Nilsson once hit in falsetto). A very gratifying release — considering how tempting it would have been to crank this out on autopilot.

Biography by Ron Wynn
Randy Crawford's initial notoriety came from her fiery vocal on "Street Life," a 1979 song matching her with the Crusaders that was included on the soundtrack for Burt Reynolds' film Sharky's Machine. Crawford was born in Macon and grew up in Cincinnati; she worked in clubs as a teen, accompanied by her father. Crawford was lead vocalist in a group that included bassist Bootsy Collins before touring as George Benson's opening act in 1972. Cannonball Adderley invited her to sing on his LP Big Man. Crawford recorded "Don't Get Caught in Love's Triangle," a song produced by Johnny Bristol, during a short stay on the label. She soon moved to Warner Bros., and after "Street Life," recorded and toured Europe with the Crusaders. Crawford was tabbed Most Outstanding Performer at the 1980 Tokyo Music Festival. She remained with Warner Bros. through the '80s and early '90s, but was unable to score either a big R&B hit or major crossover smash, despite having one of the most readily identifiable voices and distinctive approaches of any contemporary female vocalist. She's been more successful overseas, particularly in England, where such singles as "Knocking on Heaven's Door," "Rainy Night in Georgia," and "Last Night at Danceland" have gotten universal acclaim.
Biography by Alex Henderson
One of the many jazzmen who started out playing hard bop but went electric during the fusion era, Joe Sample was, in the late '50s, a founding member of the Jazz Crusaders along with trombonist Wayne Henderson, tenor saxman Wilton Felder, and drummer Stix Hooper. The Crusaders' debt to Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers wasn't hard to miss -- except that the L.A.-based unit had no trumpeter, and became known for its unique tenor/trombone front line. Sample, a hard-swinging player who could handle chordal and modal/scalar improvisation equally well, stuck to the acoustic piano during the Crusaders' early years -- but would place greater emphasis on electric keyboards when the band turned to jazz-funk in the early '70s and dropped "Jazz" from its name. Though he'd recorded as a trio pianist on 1969's obscure Fancy Dance, 1978's Rainbow Seeker was often described as his first album as a leader. In contrast to the gritty music the Crusaders became known for, Sample's own albums on MCA and, later, Warner Bros. and PRA have generally favored a very lyrical and introspective jazz-pop approach.

Bring together an all-star lineup of singers and musicians, match them with accessibly romantic melodies and radio-friendly arrangements, and the results will either be lightweight pabulum or superb high-quality pop music. In the case of producer Jason Miles' A Love Affair, it's unquestionably the latter. Even after 30 years on the world music scene, Brazilian musician/composer Ivan Lins may not have had a high profile. However, as this tribute recording demonstrates, his music is as fine as anything that has come out of his native country since the bossa nova heyday of the early '60s. Taken individually, each of these songs is a piece of joyous musical exuberance. Taken as a whole, this recording is better than an hour with any radio station you're going to find on the dial or online. A Love Affair opens with the never before recorded "She Walks This Earth," a performance by Sting that is as good as anything he's recorded as a solo artist. Vanessa Williams has never sounded better than on the sultry "Love Dance," and "So Crazy for This Love" is a piece of funk featuring a multi-tracked Chaka Khan purring a deceptively complex, original, and memorable melody that also has "hit" written all over it. Grover Washington, Jr. defines smooth jazz with his ride through "Camaleao," while Freddy Cole recalls a smokier version of his brother Nat in his reading of the beautiful ballad "I'm Not Alone." Lins himself plays piano on several tracks and closes the album with a vocal of his own on "Somos Todos Iquais Nesta Noite." Kudos go to producer Miles for bringing this remarkable assemblage together, and a special mention is due to guitarist Romero Lubambo and percussionist Cyro Baptista, whose work throughout the recording is exemplary. Don't miss this CD.

Review by Terri Hinte This is a beautifully produced and conceived collection of songs (by Joao Bosco, Danilo Caymmi, Cartola, Baden Powell, Joyce) on which Regina arrasou (outdid herself, that is to say).
Biography by John Dougan Temperamental and moody, capable of fits of extreme generosity that could quickly turn into moments of rage-filled paranoia, Elis Regina was one of the most ferociously talented singers to emerge from Brazil. A perfectionist who was frequently dissatisfied, Regina drove herself and members of her band relentlessly, leading to her being dubbed "Hurricane" and "Little Pepper" by musicians and music journalists. Her tempestuous nature aside, she commanded the respect of Brazil's leading songwriters, who lined up for the chance to have her record one of their songs, and for much of her short life was the country's most popular female vocalist.

By Louis Jaffe (San Francisco, CA USA) This album was a change of pace for Gal Costa in 1993 after she had been performing for three decades. Always a great voice, and a pioneering Tropicalist, she had veered into a vapid commercial groove in the 70's with Brazilian me-too disco albums. In "O sorisso..." she teams with New York-based expat Brazilian guitarist and producer Arto Lindsay to shed the overproduced pop and get next to some up-to-date funky backups. A fresh turn from this veteran artist.

Biography by Alvaro Neder
Nara Leão, the Musa da Bossa Nova (Bossa Nova's Muse, as she is affectionately known), was a prominent figure in bossa nova. She didn't restrict herself as a bossa nova singer, though, and was one of the first artists to engage in the movement later known as "canção de protesto" (protest song), an artistic movement which denounced military dictatorship in Brazil. She launched the careers of such composers/interpreters as Chico Buarque, Zé Keti, Martinho da Vila, Edu Lobo, Paulinho da Viola, and Fagner. An international performer in spite of her short, uneducated voice, she left an expressive discography even though death caught her by surprise at such a precocious age.

Review by Alvaro Neder This is the CD reissue of the 1978 LP Álibi, which sold one million copies, projecting Maria Bethânia as a popular romantic artist after her being inadvertently connected with protest songs due to her success at the show Opinião. "Álibi," a bolero by Djavan, "O Meu Amor" (Chico Buarque) with special guest Alcione, and "Explode Coração" (Gonzaguinha) all became hits in her interpretation, solidifying her expression in a contemporary, deep romanticism freed from the excesses of the past Brazilian tradition. She also pays tribute to Lupicínio Rodrigues ("Negue"), and interprets other hits like "Ronda" (Paulo Vanzolini), the unofficial anthem of the city of São Paulo.
