Murray beats Nadal to reach first grand slam final

Britain's Andy Murray recorded arguably the greatest victory of his career on Sunday, defeating world number one Rafael Nadal in a rain interrupted semi-final at the 2008 US Open.

Rain halted play on Saturday with Murray two sets up, and one game down in the third set. The break in play gave Nadal an opportunity to rest and regain his composure, and the Spaniard came out firing on Sunday to win the third set and power to a 3-1 lead in the fourth.

Serena Williams wins 9th grand slam title at US Open

Serena Williams claimed the 9th grand slam title of her career on Sunday as she defeated Jelena Jankovic in straight sets in the final of the 2008 US Open.

Williams had to play at her best to overcome a resilient Jankovic in a match the see-sawed back and forth. Jankovic squandered four opportunities to force a third set, before Williams seized the initiative, winning the final four games of the second set to power to a 6-4, 7-5 victory.

Federer wins while Murray put on hold

Roger Federer progressed through to the final of the 2008 US Open by defeating Novak Djokovic on Saturday.

The world number two defeated Djokovic 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 , and was gifted a significant advantage going into the final when the day's second semi-final between Andy Murray was suspended after three sets.

Federer now has an extra day of rest, while Murray and Nadal will have to reconvene on Sunday to conclude their match.

US Open braces for weather disruptions

The organisers of the US Open are bracing for bad weather ahead of the men's semi-finals and ladies final.

New York is likely to catch the tail of tropical storm Hanna on Saturday, with heavy rain expected to disrupt play at Flushing Meadows.

An inclement weather warning has been issued to ticket holders for the remaining US Open matches, as organisers prepare for the possibility of having to reschedule the concluding matches for Sunday or early next week.

Williams and Jankovic to meet in US Open final

Serena Williams will meet Jelena Jankovic in the final of the US Open after breezing past Dinara Safina in Friday's semi-final.

Williams needed just two sets to eliminate Safina, as her superior power helped her to a 6-3, 6-2 victory. The only moment of uncertainty for Williams came early in the first set when Safina broke her serve to take a 2-0 lead.

Federer through to 18th grand slam semi-final

Roger Federer needed only three sets to overcome surprise quarterfinalist Gilles Muller on Thursday, defeating the Luxembourg born player 7-6 (5), 6-4, 7-6 (5).

Despite losing in straight sets, Muller did not go down without a fight, forcing two sets into tiebreakers before Federer's experience and poise helped the former world number one reach his 18th consecutive grand slam semi-final.

Djokovic defeats Roddick in tense quarterfinal

Novak Djokovic overcame several niggling injuries on Thursday to eliminate America's last US Open hope, Andy Roddick, in the quarterfinals.

Djokovic, clearly unamused by comments Roddick had made regarding his health prior to the match, took four sets to knock the American out of the tournament. Roddick fought back bravely from a two set deficit before going down in a fourth set tiebreaker to lose 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5).
