- This morning when I was reading the news, I came across this statistic -
"The amount of grain being fed to industrially raised livestock in the United States alone is enough to alleviate much if not all of world hunger." (Source: Mark Bittman, the Opinion Pages, NY Times). Isn't that crazy?
The article is about hunger, poverty and reactions to the recent US Government cuts on food aid. A lot of the news around this topic is Government-focused, but I realise that there is a lot that we as individuals can also do to make things better. For instance, Bittman links to this Slate article on how to reduce food waste in our own homes. A lot of the suggestions are the kind of stuff that I should start doing... I'm guilty of going bonkers when I see a supermarket and buy a zillion things like they're going out of fashion, and I need to learn to rein that in. Maybe this is my wake-up call to do that...
