Very cropped photos, yes. that can make it look soft... especially when the photo was somewhat soft to begin with.

Jack of all trade/Master of none lenses like this aren't always very sharp. Especially when they are 3rd party brands. A lot also has to do with minimum shutter speeds when hand holding and optimal aperture.
