Možná trošku s křížkem po funuse, ale to nevadí. O Trentu Reznorovi toho bylo v poslední době napsáno docela dost. Od jeho "fuck off" mateřskému Interscope vydavatelství, natočení instrumentálního projektu Ghost, či znovusestavení Nine Inch Nails až po kolosální koncertní turné v USA. V mnohém mi tenhle týpek imponuje. Tím, jak si jede neustále ve svých kolejích, nedbaje na klasické zvyklosti. Tím, že skládá z radosti z hudby a zejména tím, jakým zatvrzelým způsobem se snaží změnit tvář dnešního hudebního businessu.
Jestliže album Ghost čekal málokdo, tak vydání The Slip už nikdo. Typický Reznor tak, jak ho známe. Sice už ne tak geniální a prorocký jako na Year Zero, ale stále inovativní a textově silný. "Put the gun / In my mouth / Close your eyes / Blow my fucking brains out" nechává vzpomenout na nejlepší momenty Eraseru v písni "1 000 000". Brutální řežby s přiškrcenou kytarou a divnými vazbami v pozadí. Není to hudba pro každého, vím to já, ví to Reznor, ví to všichni. Přesto je to zatraceně nakažlivé.
Nebudu Trentovi zazlívat, že se na The Slip pokusil trošku obrousit hrany své muziky. Fanoušci stejně milují vše, co napíše, a možná získá nové. "Discipline" totiž jako single přeci jen typickým trademarkem NIN není. Víc mainstream, míň industrial, s melodickým piánem a rytmickými bicími v zádech. "Echoplex" pak pokračuje v podobně lehčím duchu, kdy Reznor nechává vyniknout svůj osobitý vókál.
Obecně The Slip vaří z minulosti. Takové bilanční album bych řek. Najdete tu vše od Pretty Hate po Year Zero. Krásné balady ala Hurt ("Light In The Sky"), instrumentální hororové tracky ala Quake Theme ("Corona Radiata") či hutné basové orgie na "The Four Of Us Are Dying", která jsou spolu s "Demon Seed" asi nejlepší skladby na albu.

Trent Reznor, you spoil us. Only two months since his last bout of goth generosity, the Dark Lord is treating us to a second free LP downloadable from Nine Inch Nails’ website. Unlike the instrumental ‘Ghosts I-IV’ released in March, where only the first eight tracks were free, Reznor is giving away the whole of ‘The Slip’ gratis, relying on an eventual physical release to generate the lucre. Not only that, but ‘The Slip’ operates under a Creative Commons “share-alike” licence, which, if you’ve never edited a Wikipedia page, means fans can splice and dice its contents without fear of a lawsuit. Whatever you might think of Reznor and his work, you can’t fault his ambition or synergistic vision; no other artist alive pays so much attention to the vagaries and zephyrs of technology as he does.
The album itself follows the thread started on 2005’s ‘With Teeth’, which is to say Reznor’s again favouring songs over soundscapes. The chaotic drums and bass of ‘Letting You’ is the best song Atari Teenage Riot never wrote while ‘Lights In The Sky’ echoes the funereal tones of ‘Hurt’, all knuckled piano and barely-contained rage. ‘Corona Radiata’ and ‘The Four Of Us Are Dying’ are the only traces of Ghosts I-IV’, two sparse arrangements that feel rather flat after the overall bombast of the album. They give the impression ‘The Slip’ is a collection of work mostly imitative of Reznor’s previous exercises. But, given his diverse career and his admission that ‘The Slip’ is fan service taken to the hilt, you just can’t fault it.
