- So you're wondering, "what's the guy doing here?" [So am I, but I'm willing to put up with it--AP] Mainly, to show you why, unlike the masses that are all jumping over each other, ready to praise Google for thumbing its nose at the US government, I'm for the the judge who was going to force Google to comply with the Bush administration.
For those of you unfamiliar with the case, there are elements of the US law enforcement (an FBI task force, especially) that is cracking down on porn on the internet. Yahoo!, MSN, and other large search engines complied with the Justice Department's request for search data. It's a running joke on the internet that they are cracking down on porn, because that's pretty much the reason a lot of people use the internet.
That, and blogging. But I digress...
Google was praised for not complying, saying that it would give away trade secrets. The judge didn't see it that way. Personally, I've wondered just what Google is hiding.
Which brings me to a story I saw today, 27 charged in child porn sting. Now, I can't say that the search information helped or not, but...isn't child pornography...porn? Uh, yeah, it is.
It's a good thing Google isn't helping.
