Over the weekend, I watched a musical called Avenue Q. It was an entertaining performance filled with comedy, well-known actor/singers, nice songs, and a message that I’m sure we all need to be reminded of once in a while.
The play begins by introducing the various characters…those who live on Avenue Q. Each character is in the twenty-something to early thirties range and as we’re all familiar with in real life…they are all frustrated about where they are in life, how they’re supposed to get where they are going, and in general, what their purpose in life really is. All of these feelings were described in an aptly titled song ‘It Sucks to Be Me’.
As much as I was able to relate to certain aspects of the story line, the most important message was conveyed in the ending through a song called ‘For Now’. This song was a nice reminder that sure, life may suck, it may be hard and difficult sometimes, it may be scary, or it may even be great…but it’s all just ‘for now’.
There’s something really reassuring about that message. It’s saying that we have to get past our fears and at the same time, not be too comfortable with the status quo because very little in life is permanent and everything really is all just ‘for now’.
Personally, I think it’s great to search for our purpose and for me, to have a purpose and the entire process of searching for this purpose, is what life is really all about. But the message that I got was that we have to not be afraid, stop worrying too much about whether or not we’re doing what we’re supposed to be doing, enjoy life, and embrace it for everything that it has to offer (whether good or bad). Be happy. : )
